Feb. 21 | Abby O'Neill -- "If you've never been to a Drumhedz show... ...we're gonna take you on a quick journey as if you're going through a record store," Chris Dave told the NPR Music offices at the top of his set, "picking up different genres of music and putting it in your bag."
Chris Dave is reasonably described as your favorite drummer's favorite drummer, or better yet, your favorite musician's favorite drummer. As a veteran session artist in the music industry, he's recorded and written with everyone from D'Angelo to Adele. The Houston native leads the Drumhedz behind a trap set, with his unorthodox, stacked crash cymbals and percussive toys.
The set snuck in with a serpentine flute line that any '70s heist flick would be proud to have. Sonic smash-cuts between the musical ideas whisk away the misconception you're in control of the ride you're about to take. Vocalist and new Drumhedz member, Aaron Camper gathered the audience with a quick invocation, putting his unique range and texture on full display.
Elzhi, formerly of Slum Village, Detroit's true-school hip-hop outfit, surprised the room with an unannounced cameo, reprising his rapid-fire cadence on "Whatever" and inciting the crowd to nod along as the Drumhedz segued into "Tainted," Slum Village's turn-of-the-millennium jam.
On "Clear View," Camper and the Drumhedz ushered in '60s psychedelia reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," as if interpreted by Curtis Mayfield. Atmospheric keys played by Daniel Crawford ran roughshod over the mix, while Chris Dave, with his gift for syncopation, fostered a musical space for his bandmates to shine.
The melodic journey ended with a praise-song of gratitude and love of family called "Job Well Done." It was clear that Chris Dave and the Drumhedz had done just that.

I have become aware of so much amazing music and so many amazing musicians through Tiny Desk.
Absolutely! Lately, I go to channels like Tiny Desk and COLORS for my new music.
That cymbal stack is so fireeeee
I was thinking the same 👍👍
Sounds like three different clap samples layered on top of each other.
🔥
Istanbul Agop Clap Stack everybody :)
Yessir! that's the Istanbul Clapstack
That cymbal stack with the snare pop shot sounds EXACTLY like a Dilla clap.

Once again, the diversity of artists selected to appear on these Tiny Desk Concerts and the work of the sound crew is deep and rich. Well done NPR music.
Thank you!
this pocket is so deep i lost my keys
my guy!
Grooves so heavy you'd need a 4 horsepower turntable to spin their record
Best comment!!!!
You didn't lose them bro... They're down there, you'll just never reach them again. I dropped my cell phone in there a couple days ago; came back today to lower my son down in there, and he fell in... He said there are all types of LOST objects and PEOPLE who've jumped in there!
Josh Peets 😂😂😂
Dude showed up with overalls and no shirt...I knew it was gonna be funky.
I can’t even explain how much I would like to see a D’angelo tiny desk. This is sick.
WEAR WITH HEADPHONES!!! That bassist is absolutely killing it back there!
Thaddeus Tribbett
He’s one of the greatest bass players to ever walk the earth.
Thad always killin
Thaddeus is a melodic monster on a 4 string.
THAD TRIBBETT!!

DOPE GROUP🔥🔥🔥
The crowd didn't give Elzhi the love he deserves, thats a Slum Village LEGEND
Can I just say...I’m actually watching this at the DMV
Might as well. You're going to be there for a while.
When Elzhi came out... Then they started playing Tainted... 🤩🤩🤩 My heart jumped for joy 🙏💙
Treemarie This
The way Elzhi raps with ease is just impressive.
Normally I congratulate the sound person. Today a shout out to the person who books and selects the artists. Consistently amazing! which is a tough job considering they often take lesser known artists from any genre of music.
And congrats to the band. So much talent and synergy
They aren't nobodies, they're people who are getting hyped in their circles. But the booking ppl are plugged in, in that they have access to those in the know and people reach out to them.
That snare and stacked cymbal combo sounds so amazing! So much overflowing creativity too.
Thaddeus Tribbet on bass!!!🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
One of the tightest bands I’ve ever seen. Good lord. These are a musicians musicians right here. Incredible
That djembe solo @12:26 Yes yes yes. Live hearing another drummer that's deep in the tradition. He plays beautifully!!
Probably my favorite Tiny Desk to date. But...is it freezing cold or broiling hot in there? The clothing choices don't give us a lot of data.
Lolol...
Riiight
My literal thoughts. 😂😂😂😂
Yes.
Lol that I can remember, it was pretty cool in there, not hot.
It must be just right actually
Second Thad Tribbet appearance in a row. What a time to be alive, thanks NPR!

This is some ancestral, meets modern day, next level sounds. I am so grateful for Tiny Desk. This music makes you actually feel something. Woooooo!!!
This here...this thing right here is the very reason tiny desk is the Biggest and Baddest thing going today. Chris Daddy Dave..genius..rocking with you since Mint Condition..
Some of the best sounds I have ever heard, this recording sounded so good....I wanted to listen to it all over again, the sum of the contributors is so much more than the addition of their individual parts....the interplay between them is inimitable...the power of a united collective...... Full spectrum frequency coverage, from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs..... I would love to hear them live... Definitely this was special... and I hope they read this... best wishes........I must buy their CD sometime... to give something back, they deserve all the reward for adding these wonderful sonics to my experience of life......
I could just get lost at a concert like this.

That Music is the Answer....🎼🎼🎼🖤
I spent week at DJ Jazzy Jeff home making music with Chris Dave(Drums), Thaddaeus Tribbett(Bass), & Daniel Crawford(Keys). I am grateful to have shed with these brothers and gained more knowledge musically. When I talked with Chris Dave one on one he gave some great knowledge about being a Music Director of a band. He said "If you are the band leader and one of your musicians messes up at the show, That falls on the band leader, not anyone else". Grateful for that musicianship.
They really know how to set the mood 💎
This might be the best one yet!
Chris and Thad are locked
Whenever there is a new Tiny Desk video, you already know it is going to be 🔥
Thanks!
Always.
NPR created THE elite venue for real musicians. Thank you for keeping my soul centered during this pandemic.
7:40 they seriously did a live fade out :o
🔥
Rap is so much better with real musicians...enjoying a lot this Tiny Desk :)
It definitely takes the right musician to play live hip-hop. You gotta be a hip hop head, especially in the Dilla-school. I the most talented jazz musicians that could barely hold a hip-hop groove.
Rap with real musicians....check out The Treacherous Three "Feel The Heartbeat." All MC's, all live instruments.
Hip hop producers and DJs ARE REAL MUSICIANS

He meant acoustic instruments with no looping.... You can say what you want... About tracking but a live full band with hip hop is irreplaceable.
This is one of those that you have to pre-like👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I LOVE you NPR! Tiny Desk is introducing me to so many new and professional musicians! Keep doing what you do!
quality musicians, the drummer is crazy good
By far my favorite tiny desk. Beautiful to see elzhi. Love that man
I'm just here for this two amazing guitarist
Never heard of them but I love it. Glad I got turned on to them.
Some of the greatest musicians on the planet 💜💜
Thanks, Chris.
Chris Dave is often imitated but remains one of a kind. That being said, Does everybody else see the guy wearing denim overalls or just me?
Frank Moka!! Lol
🤣🤣🤣 him got his own style lol
Wearing that, he was just asking for a bongo solo nip slip.
I see him 🧐🤣👀😂
One of a kind? They sound a lot like a Roots clone to me.
Lawd. These are some funky, stanky awesome grooves! Amazing musicians.
It’s disgusting how beautiful this was.
chris legend
This kind of Music is so missed. Love these guys !!! That Excellence !!!
15:45 only Chris can get away with a fill like that.
Lol dayum
Mikael Palm agree he used to a lot of stuff like that on the Kanye flashing lights track, though the feel has evolved since 2012
Chris & Spank
Off time on time 🔥🔥🔥
the amount of times i’ve watched this amazing performance
Lost count long ago 😂
Watched this for the music, Chris's drumming, and Sharkey's guitaring, but was most impressed by Aaron's vocals. Delightful.
This is where I need to be..what am I doing🤦🏾♂️..✊🏾⭐️💯🔥
Fantastic!
Guest Slum Village vocalist, Elzhi, is a nod to J-Dilla's composition genuis. Chris Dave, Kebbi Williams (flute/saxaphone) are some J-Dilla loving cats for sure.
So great! This performance only gave us a sliver of how much fire-power is in the band. Go see these guys live and you'll see every one of these legends shut down the room.
Such a needed vibe! I wish this was 2 hours long!💯
Oh!!! flute😉👍
What a cool concert it was !
That intro groove is sick too, so many brilliant moments on this show its crazy
1:50 handshake timing on point
Dope.. good catch. Straight vibes
White people always amazed at our culture lol
Thank you Chris Dave!
This is insane - I have a massive smile listening to this brilliant music :) :)
SOOOO nobody see Thadd back there doing Thadd things!!

He BODIED sounds of the city man ... B O D I E D
13:55 🔥🙌Chris Dave on some Fast forward movements😁👌
This is one of the few tiny desks that you can watch more than 3 times and still be blown away
YO IS THAT AN ANDERSON PAAK FREESTYLE I HEAR
yeahhh he used that freestyle to do the vocals on the studio version of the song Black Hole!
I heard it too 😚
Right!!!
Dude did a good job with it
That wasn't a freestyle, idk why they're calling it that. Lol
I have a friend who is a professional drummer that turned me on to this Chris Dave a few days ago....and here he is on Tiny Desk. Amazing to know real music is not dead because of artists like these. NPR PLEASE have Yessuf Dayes on here next with Mansur Brown, Alfa Mist and Rocco Palladino. I would pay good money to see that. Thanks for spotlighting these artists that most people would not know about if it was not for you guys.
Good list, I'll take em separate or together! It'd be great.
I saw that group of musicians play recently, what an experience it was!
Absolutely amazing.
I don't I've ever kept playing a Tiny Desk Concert over as much as I have this one. I pick up something new every time. Band is crazy!!
This is what it sounds like when you have too much talent
Outstanding compositions.
This is the wildest show I’ve seen on here! The talent of this group is amazing and refreshing! At times, It feels more like a shed (jam sesh) than a show. They really vibe with one another.
Best groove I've heard in my life honest to God, keep coming back to this
Chris Dave timed his return to the kit perfectly at the start. Just in time
It really blew me as well
YES! 🤩
*Many goosbumps*
That interlude is heavenly. Wow
