The great thing about this episode is, yes, Simon is very different. Because he's _in his element_ for the first time. The rest of the series, he's been a fugitive trying to lay low or be peripherally involved in sneaky criming, and that just ain't his thing, by either inclination or training. He doesn't know WTF he's doing or WTF is going on, and it shows. Constantly.
But he was a top surgeon at a top hospital, from a well-placed and rich family. Knowing how things work in a core system hospital? Knowing what's medically going on with a random person just out of surgery? Dealing with a piddling little random cop in a hospital security ward? For most of his life, he's _been_ the high and powerful person in these situations, and he knows _exactly_ how they work and what he's doing in them. For the first time, we get to see the person he was before he threw it all away in desperation to help his sister.

Yes!! He looked badass as hell!! And even Jayne admitted that Simon had a great plan! That scene was very cool, i love serious Simon ☺️ he has been portrayed as being a little lost and overwhelmed a lot but like you said, when it comes to what he knows, well, he KNOWSS.

It's a common belief that Jayne would have been dead, but then he accepted he was going to die, he stopped making excuses, and his last words were that he didn't want the crew to know what he did. That gave Mal hope that Jayne knew he'd done wrong, and had learned from this and would now think of the Tams as actual crew rather than fugitives and passengers. He knows Mal will be watching, and he's probably well aware that this was his one pass, if he screws up again, he's gone.

Yeah . . . that's the most I would say about Jayne: he has some pride. Unlike other commenters I don't see any sign that Jayne improves morally over the course of the show. He's still a rat, he just learns Mal won't tolerate betrayal. All the sympathetic analysis of Jayne's precious soul on these pages just indicates how much young male SF fan bros like tough guys with big guns.

    • @JustsMyles15

LOL i mean... yeah hahaha I love Jayne though, but he is looking after himself. He doesn't give the vibe that he will change, he'll simply adjust to be sure that he doesn't get kicked out. For me, as i said in another comment, he seems to be on survival mode way more than other crew member, as if he thinks the crew could leave him behind at any point and so he needs to be prepare for it. I dont think he is grasping the CREW part at all.

There was a hidden reason River slashed Jayne. With the premature cancellation, major storylines could not be explored.
The "Big Bad" in the Firefly 'Verse is the Blue Sun Corporation. Blue Sun is a mega-conglomerate that makes basically everything and has become more powerful than even the Alliance government (note how the "Hands of Blue" guys were unconcerned with killing government agents). You see their logos here and there around the show, usually in the background. For example, the "Cry Baby" coffee can in the original episode was labeled "Blue Sun". The show implies (e.g. "two by two, hands of blue") that the Blue Sun Corporation was behind River's torture at the Academy.
So why did River slash Jayne? Look at the shirt he was wearing...it was a T-Shirt with the Blue Sun logo. Remember when River in "Shindig" episode was tearing off can food labels? The idea is that those were also labeled "Blue Sun". River was looking to get rid of the Blue Sun logo, it just happened to be on a shirt Jayne was wearing.

I did not noticed Jayne shirt in this one though :O thank you for telling me! I am guessing that it is not known by the general public that Blue Sun does shady shit like that or is that powerful? I love that hidden stuff. What a shame that nothing could have been look into more. That is something that i would never have known without you guys telling me. It gives another layer and more perspective!!

There were rumors, back in the '60's , conspiracy theories, that the US government was a front for the Coca-Cola Company. Not sure how seriously they were believed, but they were out there. Blue Sun ( actually Blue Sun Cola, if you read the labels clearly enough) fills that role here...

This is my favorite episode of all because of exactly what you brought up: that exchange between Mal and Jayne at the end. It was such good acting.
I also like this because of how it refines Jayne's character. A lot of people seem to conclude that his motivations were purely for money, but I don't agree with that. I feel like Jayne really gained a greater sense of family and loyalty after joining the Firefly crew, as we see in the previous episode when it takes not just the offer of a fair cut of the profits but also his own bunk before he betrays his former crew. While he has been more cavalier in betraying his crew in the past, as Jaynestown shows, I believe he was attracted to the sense of being part of a family on Mal's crew.
While he was predisposed to hate Simon and, by extension, River, I think his hatred was justified, given his personality, since Simon put the crew in danger without disclosing to them that they would be harboring a fugitive and then by using Kaylee's life after she was shot as a bargaining point when he demanded they put themselves in even more danger. Simon really made some dick moves in forcing his problems onto them, and while Mal and the rest of the crew were more forgiving, Jayne isn't just blindly sympathetic for sympathy's sake and rightly concluded that they were dangerous to him and everyone else and, in his estimation, not worth the trouble. Couple that hatred with River's unhinged attack and you basically get the straw that breaks the camel's back. He complained, justifiably so, to the captain and got nothing but rebuke. Since he didn't witness the captain's ultimatum to Simon afterward, that would have left him feeling like the captain was favoring the Tams over him and would probably erode his sense of family and belonging.
It's obvious Jayne didn't think of this as a betrayal of the crew. He probably looked at it as protection of his found family, something that the captain might be grateful for later. I think that, even more than the profit motive, went into his betrayal. He would have had a lot of chances to betray the Tams prior to that and didn't take them. His wish to rid them of the Tams isn't bad in and of itself. He would solve a lot of the crew's problems by getting rid of them, problems that the crew had forced upon them. But his plan was stupid and probably a bit skewed by greed with the reward. Even if you sympathize with his actions, they were stupid. As Mal pointed out, he was going to get pinched anyway, and if he really wanted to betray the Tams there were other ways to do it that would have worked better.
In the end, I consider Jayne to be the most interesting character on the show, because the motives that he seems to present up front are presented as simple but are far more complex when you dig into them, without resorting to hidden backstories like Book or Inara.

We don't find out in the series (we do get a hint or two), but what some folks don't factor in for Jayne is what he's doing with his money. If it were just a pure scumbag, I don't feel like he'd be sending so much of his earnings to his mother and siblings. If I recall correctly, it was their family's lack of being able to afford expensive medication that got him looking off planet for income to begin with.
Is he an angel? Of course not. Not caring about others because they're not family isn't great, but his demonstrated caring for his family (and I'd argue he sees the crew as family by the end of things) shows at least some level of decency

"2 by 2, hands of blue."
After "The Hero of Canton, the Man They Call Jayne!", now he's someone that would prefer to think well of himself. If he didn't much care previously. Next up, does he learn his lesson?
Simon did look impressive, and there's more insight into River's condition. Can he actually think of them as part of the crew?
Thanks, Miles, for another lovely reaction to one of my favorite shows.

I like that you’re open to the possibility of Jayne learning from his betrayal and Mal’s confrontation.
Will he change his attitude? Will he become yet another enemy?
Only time will tell, but one thing is sure. In a ship full of heroic and noble characters, Jayne was written from day one to inevitably betray the crew in some way.
They needed a loose cannon whilst they amassed an array of enemies, and amass them they have.
    Badger
    Patience
    Wing
    Nisska
    Saffron
    Haymer
    The Alliance
    The Reavers
    The Blue Hands dudes.
and the season isn’t even over yet.
Jayne did begin to puzzle over the idea of selflessness in Jaynestown, and he’s most definitely on a journey of reshaping himself, whether he likes it or not.
Pay VERY close attention to what he says and does over the coming episodes. We keep learning about him as he learns about himself.
He’s my favourite character in spite of his crass nature. It’s his flaws and clear differences to Mal that make him interesting.
It’d be interesting to see a spinoff show of Jayne.

Yeah, he is doing everything for himself or almost everything, but it doesnt mean he doesnt have feelings! He still protected River and Simon when they escaped from the Feds, he could have run out if he really 100% didnt care! He is still a loose canon, and wouldnt trust him though 😝

Battlestar Galactica was my favorite sci-fi show of all time...until I finished the third season of The Expanse, when The Expanse became not only my favorite sci-fi show, but my my favorite TV show of all time. Hope you get to The Expanse at some point!

Yea....before jumping into the whole Battlestar Galactica universe, you need to set yourself a plan...Old, new, series, mini-series.
The only thing I would suggest, is ensure the "timeline" of whatever you do is correct. There's nothing worse in a rabbit hole than being not at the opening. ;-)
Imagine doing episode 2 or 3 of Firefly without having watched them is correct order, understand my point.
    Anyways, all the best.
    Cheers.

From what people have told me, and from what i can see online (not doing too much research online because i am too scared of seeing spoilers!!), it is the mini serie first, then the 2004 version, at least the first season but then i can watch the older version for perspective before continuing 🧐

It’s true that Jayne betrayed the crew and sure, we can be mad at him, but I always considered this a huge ball drop on Mal’s part. This wasn’t just a casual betrayal, Jayne wasn’t just acting out of greed. River attacked him with a knife and for all his talk of, “you’re my crew,” Mal didn’t come to Jayne’s defense at all. This is the one time I think Mal really failed as a captain and I think Jayne did what he did in part because he felt betrayed.

    • @JustsMyles15

I totally understand why he would turn on simon ans river! They are indees causing trouble and Jaybe doesnt see them as part of the crew. Mal did talk to Simon but Jayne wasnt in the room. I do agree with you that Mal should have said something to Jayne or in front of Jayne that shows that he is not happy of the situation and River will have consequences!

And they didnt even know it was medicine!! But i thought maybe something bad would happen in the hospital and they would end up needing the medication right away and then it would be the inner battle of "argh are we really going to give back to gouvernment facilities" ! That was my personal unsaid guess at the time hahah!! I was wrong 😝

In Jayne's defense... River had just *_slashed him across the chest with a knife without provocation_* , and Mal had just told him that he had no intention of doing anything about it. (Jayne doesn't know about the conversation Mal had with Simon about River being confined to her room.) At that point, Jayne has to at least consider taking action just in self-defense.
Jayne's been saying all along that the Tams are too dangerous to have aboard, and honestly, he's kinda not wrong. In the pilot, Simon gets Kaylee shot, and then threatens to not help her as leverage to get his way. Their presence has brought the Alliance down on Serenity at least twice. River's latest instability and resulting attack are just the straw that broke the camel's back. Yes, he obviously wants to get the reward rather than just killing the Tams or something, but still... he's not *_JUST_* doing it for the reward.
And yes, I think he does feel conflicted about it. You can see it in his face at times before the feds arrive. After they get pinched and escape the feds, Jayne helps the Tams and brings them along with him, even though it would have been easier for him to leave them for the Hands of Blue and to escape on his own. And when Mal is going to space him, he doesn't want the rest of the crew to know what he did, because he's ashamed.
Jayne's not the nicest guy in the 'Verse, it's definitely true. But he's a complicated character. Nothing with him is ever *_quite_* as simple as it seems on the surface...

    • @JustsMyles15
      @JustsMyles15  Месяц назад +2

He definitely have good reasons to not want Simon and River on the ship! They have been a disturbance and caused issues for sure, and Jayne doesnt like to complicate stuff! I really like Jayne. He is not just the "big crazy bad guy" like a lot of show would do. We know from the start that he has a reason doing what he does. I dont know about his backstory really yet, but it seems to me that he is in "survival mode" and cannot grasp that he actually is in a "good" place now. Yes they struggle but overall they are doing toooooo bad and to me he really gives "i could be left alone and have nothing at anytime". I dont know if i am explaining this right 😅

Okay, but to be fair, Simon took down one of the armed guards, who was back up and coming for Jayne while he took down the other guard. Jayne tried to head back twice, thinking he could fight his way out, and would have run straight into the blue hands while Simon and River got away, if the Tams hadn't delayed him long enough to make it clear that back was a bad idea. Jayne also had no idea how to get out of the hospital, but River lead them right to Mal.

Regarding Battlestar Galactica, indeed, you should watch the 1978 version, whether you react to it or not. So much of the 2003/2004 version is simply rewriting of the same things. At times I found the later version annoying for it. And, there are a few utterly direct allusions to the original better understood if you have seen the original

Thumbs down for the witless theatre kid reaction. Everyone hates on Jayne, conveniently forgetting he would have two dozen stitches. He saw himself as being helpful. All the reviewers go "oh, why doesn't he try to help"- real world, you get rid of that kind of problem by dropping it and running away. The happy hippie dippie land where self declared moral virtuosity means you'll prevail because your purity doesn't exist. WHen he knows more, he gets a bad case of regrets. I AM NOT saying he was right, they're part of his crew, but his actions are understandable.

You mentioned more than once that the "hands of blue" guys were sent by the academy, and asked if the academy is over the Alliance.
When Simon told the crew the story of how he and River became fugitives, he mentioned that the academy was run by the government. So the hands of blue guys work for the government. The same government that tortured River.

My unsolicited advice: ignore everything anyone says about Blue Sun (which I'm sure you'll see a lot). It's just as reasonable to conclude that River read Jayne's mind or his intentions or even saw the future. Head canon is the best canon.
Aside from which, everyone who says that Blue Sun must be the reason is ignoring the way the story developed upon the show getting cancelled. What a show _may_ have planned and what it actually did are two different things.

    • @becca1189
      @becca1189 Месяц назад +4

River saw a future that didn't exist until *after* she slashed Jayne in the chest, prompting Simon to come up with the plan which gave Jayne the opportunity to turn them in with getting his chest slashed being a goodly portion of the motivation? Your head canon ignores the fact that the reasons for River's actions didn't exist until she carried out those actions.
While the show ended, with many loose strings, the story was continued in the graphic novels. Which are official canon. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

    • @adamwells9352

@becca1189 classic bootstrap paradox; not exactly unusual in sci fi. Anyway, I didn't say it was _my_ head canon. I do think it's perfectly reasonable to say that Jayne was thinking how sweet it would be to turn them in and collect the reward, and then she slashed him for thinking that, driving him to actually do it. I would address this particular event more, but it'd be spoiler-y. In any case, the point I will continue to defend is that the interpretation is an inseparable part of the art.

    • @JustsMyles15

I think that it is important to note those thing happening with Blue Sun though; i wouldnt have known about that or noticed any of that without people telling me about it, and it adds another layers to everything. Not sure if it stays more like an easter egg throughout the show or if they do mention it at some point, but it is good to know! ☺️

    • @becca1189
      @becca1189 29 дней назад

@@adamwells9352 It may not be *your* head canon, but it's the one you're going with & if you're going to argue that one should stick to "what [the show] actually did" it would exclude the paradox since that subject was never even touched on. There's no evidence one way or the other that it's how the Firefly universe operates.
If River's motivation for slashing Jayne across the chest was simply his fantasy of money for turning them in, she'd have done it long ago -- it's hardly something new. Why slash his chest if she truly felt threatened by him? She could've just as easily slashed his throat. It also doesn't explain her comment of, "He looks better in red."
Personally, I love a well done paradox storyline. In this instance, however, it simply has too many holes in it for my liking. As does the "what Jayne was thinking at the time" theory.
      ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

@@becca1189 I don't understand what you mean by "it's the one I'm going with." I go with that her actions are motivated by a jumble of what's going on around her, including Jayne's scorn and the discussion of the core planets. I don't think anything else is necessary. River is clearly trapped in her own overwhelming present (which the show makes a point of in this episode) and it's perfectly reasonable to say that Jayne thought about it _right then_. But the point is not that we disagree about her motivation at this moment. The whole reason I made the original comment was just to say that reasons that don't appear on the screen do not get bonus legitimacy because they may have been planned at some point. There is no trump card over people's interpretation.
