Haha! You nailed reefer psychology head on!
"My reef tank is doing well. Do I relax and enjoy it? NO! I will start a second one!"
More fish, more coral, bigger, things that I should keep together but it could work out since I'm now a Master of the Fish universe
@heheheh was about to comment now its time to do something dumb like mix some iffy wrasses into my reef
The video is so true!! The psychology of keeping a reef tank is something I always try to explain to my friends who keep freshwater tanks. Living on a knife edge keeps me interested, for me easy equals boring!
I really needed this. It’s more of a parable for life itself; the tank is a mere metaphor for reality of life.
So true
Reef tanks are just an amazing thing. A great community and very rewarding
All reef keepers are masochists. When I was 16 and got my first job and was able to start a 1 gallon reef tank out of an old acrylic jewelry box container. Complete with a Refugium. Filtration, and an auto top off system. Probably the most daring, frustrating and rewarding projects I ever took on.
The David Goggins of reefing!
I agree, I do it because it tests me everyday
I have found that reefing is living one’s journey with many ups and downs and sometimes having you take a step back and reflecting. Seeing those incremental successes and rewarding experiences is key. 😊
Such a very true philosophy. I can remember Listening to a song called “If” by Glasvegas for the first time and being amazed at how much this applies in life. Great video!
Dude, that was deep.. 😳🤓🤘. Now, where did I put the keys to my car .. 🤪
I used to work on a cannabis farm so I actually find saltwater tanks easy to keep. Mixing chemicals and testing water is a normal day. I also have really good eyes for inspecting livestock. When I started my tank it was constantly changing so it was fun. Right now my tank is stable and boring. I bought a dying plate coral but its been stable for about a month so I put it in the shade and I'm going to leave it until it starts growing babies. Once again my tank is stable. I'm thinking about setting up some spare tanks I have just so if I find something I like at a LFS I can bring back that new tank feeling.
Nice philosophical observations that are often ignored, but are always lurking in the back of our darkest reefing fantasies. I'm glad that your are in touch with your reefing shadow and I'll be looking forward to hearing about your new adventures in coral eating fish.
This is probably one of the best explanations of owning and keeping a reef weather it be a lps sps or softy tank awesome video
Wow this is so true Ryan, fantastic video
As someone who’s just lost my 3 fish two clowns and a royal grammar I understand this. They were in my tank for 2 months before getting ich. Absolutely gutted however I have learned so much from this and am looking forward to getting things done the right way. I am currently over caring for my coral to make sure they have everything and staying alive.
Brilliant on so many levels. Well said and thanks for your honesty 👍
Excellent video
That was deep
I’ll never be finished suffering 😂
I love your philosophising! And yes pop that big ass angel fish in the coral tank, my thoughts exactly. Isn't that the holy, inachievable (?) grail? To be able to keep all kinds of reef fish in a fish tank because hey, in nature the swim around reefs. I've been thinking myself, how could you keep an angelfish in a reef tank? Personally I'd if you manage to get it hooked on a certain kind of food, it might leave the corals alone. Good luck and can't wait to see that next video!
I agree getting in to reefing was amazing for me loved every year of it so far been lucky and finally got my dream display just got to hit the bank account for the next couple of month to fill all the extra empty space I have for corals now
My friend has kept 2 angels in a reef For 3 years
One Is emperror, have a lot of algea and it wont nip coral as much
This is your best video! 🤯 So true!
This was amazing
From a philosophy major from WVU I concur, because you know, even though I’m a builder and a part-time standup philosopher, I question you know, why am I doing this fishy business , I think you put it well, it’s an obsession borderline addiction mixed with science, kind of universal truth when the organisms thrive
Spot on. I started a 15 gallon nano several months ago and have leathers, lps, and sps; for a long while, it was also heavily stocked with fish. Then, velvet outbreak right before a vacation. Had to remove my micro-sized fish from the tank and managed to save 5 of them, and decided to keep only 2 (the others I returned to my LFS to find new loving homes). Instead of letting this experience destroy the hobby for me, I just started a 2 gallon pico for my desk. Addiction to pain, suffering, personal growth, and perhaps above all, beauty and reverence of nature.
This was 100% I'm with you on everything you said here you do need to post more videos tho don't get me wrong I love the live streams with Alex but I do like the farm and would like to see alot more of it
how did i get here? i don’t keep reefs, nor do i ever plan on doing so? videos are cool and the fish are pretty though
Yep I do agree with this, although I am after many years of having tanks thinking about throwing in the towel. Have not be able to get my 75g back looking good for the past year, plus cost as you mentioned have seemed to skyrocket.. you did hit the psych right on the head I think..
I enjoy the challenge of reefing, not sure I'd dileberately go for something I thought was a bad idea. Plenty of bad ideas I thought were going to be good ones.... 👍 🙃 💡
I don't know anything about fishtanks, bur your philosophy is very insightful for the point in my life that I am in. I have become very complacent in my job at work, and it's no longer very spiritually rewarding, even though the pay is sufficient. I think it's probably time to move on.
That is absolutely bob on, also known as a 'glutton for punishment', and striving for the seemingly impossible. And no, I am nowhere near the impossible dream (yet) 🤣
Awesome video with 100% truth
I do enjoy the problem solving side of the hobby! Great video Ryan
I find I’m always thinking about my tank. What is wrong and what I need to fix.
Speaking of self induced suffering, im trying to decide on whether or not to make yet another coral order but makes me think of a question, what are your success rates like on med to large sized trachyphyllias and wellsophyllias?? I found a black friday deal on a couple priced really well and its only being shipped from 4hrs away so the shipping should be gentle on it jus those big fleshy lps like that make me nervous because some are very prone to injury during shipment and then rtn’ing or getting an infection and dying so its really worrying me as i have no experience in having either of those two shipped only ever bought them in person before, please help me lol make the decision easy either they ship well or not so well compared to other corals ? for instance every time ive had acans shipped they get damaged alot unless theyre a small frag
Sadly mine have never lasted more then 3 months. It is definitely harder imo when buying a large colony. I try to only buy fragments now
Which angelfish were you thinking for your bruiser fish for your next tank?
I like the idea of an Annularis Angelfish
@@PrestigeReef We have one of those, unlike what online says ours is a real ass hole, and they are super rare. I've only ever seen two or three. Ours was about 4-5 inches. I would maybe get a smaller one so you can knock it into him that being a bully and a coral muncher is bad. We feed our angels a sea food mix from morrisons or something and it has squid, muscle and clams or something and it seems to satisfy them pretty good. We have an annularis (the meanest one by far) a scribble (gentle giant but doesn't really get on with our sailfin sometimes) an emperor (a right coward but is a very nice fish for an emperor) and lastly we have a passer (this dude is an absoulute unit, when he went in he fended off the achilles and the purple tang at the same time) These 4 have been in for a while and are in a reef aquarium that is mostly LPS and a few sps and some odd balls like a gorgonian and stuff. Hopefully you have good luck with yours and you don't get a stinker.
this has been me tho i wouldnt say mines would always eat corals tho it is known for nipping on them teh coral beauty and ive had him in my tank for almost a year now and he hasnt eaten any coral and he wont ever.
I have a new butterfly main 210g for my 4 butterflyfish I had to seperate my larger raccoon from the others, I’m gonna try to add him in later because the other butterfly’s are under 2 inches and this guy is like 2 and a half
He attacked all the others so I set up a barrier and planning to add him maybe last to the new tank, it’s a big tank so I hope he doesn’t get too aggressive but I’m worried.
I try to run a tank with out fish. Just dosing all nutrients. Of course I fail with that challanges many times.
Hi ✌🏾
Not a true statement.
I have a toadstool, mushroom & encrusting lps tank. 2 clowns, no skimmer, 1 water change a week. 99% enjoyment.
sound losing a lot of money to me XD LOL
Nowadays marine hobby which is so call " rich man hobby " and need tons of maintenance and effort as well 🙃
