I have found that zig zagging over string is a much easier and more secure way of gathering. Nothing worse than to have your thread break at the end of your gather!
Normally the reason you don't backstitch is because the threads are supposed to be removed once the gather is sewn on to the rest of the project. Backstitching would make this more of a pain in the rear. Of course it really depends on the intended use or look that the gather is for. The problem I have is that this method of gathering (with the basting stitch) is very difficult and tedious when there is a lot of fabric to gather, like yards. At times like that I normally zig-zag stitch over a 'baseline' thread that's actually used for gathering (preferably something like carpet thread.) Many times I've tried to gather long lengths like this with basting stitches only to have them break because of the wear and tear on the thread that just happens on pieces that aren't small demo swatches. Most of the clothing I make is 1/3 scale (to human size) and I still have the problem of gathering massively long lengths for some fancier clothing. The other solution for longer lengths to be gathered is a gathering foot that works well once properly adjusted, but the problem pops up when the gathering ratio needs to be changed, or it simply is too aggressive for delicate things like lace. Have you ever used a gathering foot? If so, do you have any advice on how to best use it? I've yet to find a comprehensive tutorial on using one. It almost seems like there is the assumption if you have one that it is self explanatory (it isn't.)
Very good tip, thank you!
