Cold steels Espada (Large and XL) and Voyager are hands down the best combat folders ever made. A good knife for self defense needs to be large enough, heavy and razor-sharp. When pulled the size alone will easy intimidate the crap out of any attacker.
Love cold steel, been buying them and selling everything else. Cold steel just gives such a good feeling : you know their lock is best, you know their heat treat is best in production, you know their edges are sharp, you know you're not getting ripped off in terms of $, you know you're getting a design that Lynn is himself comfortable to use in hunting, you know you can get them big > 5in folders. All these factors matter and they slowly creep up on you, making you (i) a die hard Cold Steel fanboy.
Historically the weapon that inspired the Frenzy, a Kabutowari, is a battlefield blunt weapon meant to hit the armored enemy in the head, causing damage or at least disorientation so he would fall down. Then the user will stab the pointy tip into the joints of the armor to finish the enemy off. Some variations of the Kabutowari are sharpened on the inside curve, the same as the Frenzy, but the majority of them are pure impact weapons.
The Frenzy Knife reminds me on a Viking Seax Knife... foldable. It is a great knife to have on your person and more versatile than just defense/fighting!
I wonder about that these days. I feel like CS quality isn't anywhere near where it was 5-10 years ago, allowing competitors to easily compete with their offerings. And for their price, I frequently find myself looking to other brands offering the same steel, quality, and blade geometries cheaper. I miss all the knives they used to do in VG10 and San Mai. BD1 isn't bad, but it's not going to blow anyone away. I haven't owned an XHP steel knife yet, so I don't know about those.
nutnfancy $239 is a ton of money for a blade... cold steel has alot of great value blades but i dont think the frenzy should be considered a value blade.
are you series? replacing san mai with 3v is bad? how about using s35vn? and you praise vg10 but don't like bd1? im sorry but i think this is their greatest year by far
PracticalTacticalSheepdog probably should actually look at the prices listed from the links in the description before you make an argument about value. It’s selling for like $140.
I recently went to the Stratosphere in Las Vegas NV. Christmas Eve to be exact. We were going up to the bar on the 107th floor 🍸 👍. But first we had to go through a metal detector and I had to check in my pocket knife. It's a Cold Steel⛄ XL Recon 1 tanto 😱.The security guard said that's a big pocket knife. I said I have a big pocket. 🍺
Very cool looking knife. Here is my take on Cold Steel. I think they make GREAT tactical folders. Definition of tactical folder for me, is a knife used as a weapon or back up weapon to a firearm. So what makes a good tactical folder? Easy. The Lock. I don't care what kind of super steel other manufactures use. It can be Adamantium forged in Mt. Doom if the lock is weak then all you have is a tool that will amputate your fingers. I am always amazed at people who complained that Cold Steel only used AUS8. First off I own all kinds of knives, some from higher end manufactures and most of those are better steels ( A2, D2, O-1 CM154, Ats34, Sv30 BG42 and the list goes on) I can sharpen Cold Steel AUS8 to a razors edge, better than all those other super steels. Will it hold its edge as long? NO. But as a tactical folder it does not need to, if I am in the backwoods with no access to sharpening equipment or I was looking for skinning folder than sure give me the other steels. The Triad lock has proven itself to be the strongest mass produced folding lock on the planet. Cold steel has heat treating down to an art so I am sure the new "better" carpenter steels will be amazing. Lastly, my only complaint is that they don't make stuff in USA. Spyderco gets it done with some models and cost is about the same that Cold Steel is now charging. Benchmade gets it done for a bit more money. I'd like to see some US made stuff..In the meantime Cold Steel makes great products with outstanding locks.
That OD handle is so damn cool I might pick this up even though I hate wharncliffe blades. Hopefully they will do that style of black and OD layered grips on other knives. I would grab that version of my CS AK-47 in a heartbeat. I also wish Cold Steel would do loop-over clips.
I couldn't believe that you didn't made a review for this knife and the Cold Steel Prolite as soon as they were realeased. Both are very lightweight and the Prolite is basically a Tri-Ad lock on a budget.
It would be much easier to push the frenzy into an enemy combatant chest through fatigues and stir chop their organs than the wide clip blade of the voyager..... I say this while watching and playing with 2 Voyager XLs on my desk. Nutn, thanks to your influence over 10+ years, I've become a collector of high value, affordable, big knives. Cheers from Australia.
I looooove me some cold steel. Ive got so many of their products in my system and they never let me down. Their folders are my go-to when a folder is needed because their lock system is damn near as strong as a fixed blade.
Hey Nutn...Great KRV dude...Just FYI...I removed the thumb-studs from my Voyager XL & installed a zip tie mod to make it waveable out of pocket...Highly recommended!!! Thanx for all the helpful & inspirational info bro...Keep it up!
OK Nutn I just scored the SMAEL black with orange numbers cuz of U. 👍👍 I was needing something tough but cheap in case I damage it getting rowdy at work as a CO. The big house is not a place to flash fancy watches. Thanks for the recommendation.
the frenzy 1, frenzy 2, 3 etc refers to the same knife in different colorations. an unusual naming convention also seen on the cold steel broken skull 1, 2, etc. just different handle colours.
NICE!!! I like that stuff!! I have (3) Cold Steel Folding Blades, Spartan, AK-47, Recon 1 Tanto 50/50 and (4) Fixed Blades, OSS, Marauder, Chaos Kukri and my favourite EDC the Safemaker 1. I will say that I don't care for their Machete's though. I prefer Ontario Machete's, just me.
Love your vids man but I gotta disagree on this one, I have EDC’d my Frenzy since day one from everything from opening boxes to backing down agressors and it’s been amazing.
Cold Steel and Lynn C Thompson are still the Knife Industry, Giant and true knife and martial minded individuals appreciate the products him and Andrew Demko bring to the Knife Game .🎯
Check out they're ""Machetes" very high quality for the price... depending on the model your basically getting a sword made of spring steel.... durable affordable and very utilitarian... i have a cold steel smachete machete and love it
Hey, Nutn, you never say much about the steel. There are guys on RUclips pretty much trashing AUS8 and you've got Lynn Thompson putting out fighting knives with the CTS-XHP steel. I'd rather have the fighting knives come out cheaper with lesser steels that we could afford. BTW, I can use the Frenzy fine in the kitchen as long as I don't use a cutting board. the blade shape doesn't really hinder it as much as I thought. Good knife, great review.
So I bought a Frenzy in s35v I love it and a Espada in AUS10 I have hit the hard spot with trying to figure out what to carry most of the time im just lucky my Rajah in AUS10 is really have to carry daily or else it would be a stupid had time to pick what to carry.
Just to point it out, that first Espada is the large not the extra large. There's a big difference. Big as in 5 inches of difference in overall length. The Voyager series has an extra large which has a 5 1/2 inch blade, whereas the 5 1/2 inch Espada is "large" and the "extra large" is 7 1/2 inches long.
Love the looks of this knife! I will be adding one to my collection. BTW, I think the number refers to the color of the handle for this knife. It will go well with my Cold Steel XL Voyager (clip and tanto) and Rajah 1.
Woah those watches are affordable! Cold steel is great! The espada xl is insanity but I'm glad it exists! The frenzy looks pretty neat I love the handles! My next cold steel is the broken skull it's just waiting its turn on my wish list!
Wharncliffe is a working blade shape blade. straight cut for precision. You already know better shaps for combat. Blade isn`t for the the stabbing or follow up tear. Awesome work blade for the working man.
Ever think of taking the thumbstuds out and throwing a spyderco ziptie mod on there? Ive been wanting to do that to a few cold steels that arent waveable out of box. I know you've said recently you normally dont carry knives that arent waveable off the pocket and I have the same philosophy on my tactical blades.
Pronunciation: ka-bu-to | wa-ri ... it's actually two words jammed together. Very loosely translated I think it means Bad Helmet (which would be apt I guess, don't think I'd want to wear this as a helmet). Or, likely, the blade was particularly good at piercing a helmet. I think I like the watch better than the blade ... actually I know I do. Personally I wouldn't carry a folding knife with a blade length over about 4in. I carried a Kalashnikov automat for years when I was in, for larger tasks I had a semi-custom hawk. Still carry the Kalashnikov every day ... though I think there's a OTF in my future ... just 'cause I can.
Love the cold steel knives. I have used them for years. I consider the Freenzy a edc lol. I carry a Recon tanto XL and XXL daily. I prefer a larger knife. I really like the Freenzy and will edc this knife
IMHO nothing beats the large Espada. It's not that bad when carried in the front pocket. Plus the size alone when pulled out will intimidate the crap out of most attackers.
Yikes! The whole reason behind the gloves I believe is to keep from cutting his own fingers off with that thing. That is terrifyingly sharp for a folder that size!
And it's a little more photogenic than looking at hands. We've got a bad habit of noticing all the little funky things that you wouldn't take note of when it's your own hands on camera. It sucks to get in to edit and notice a funky cut or ink stain. -Doodle
I don't agree with your take on the POU, nutn. I think the frenzy would do well as a EMT or emergency tool. The point would allow the blade to slide under seatbelts and clothing.
I like Nutn' s knife reviews, but somewhere, there should be reviews that include hard tests of strength of blade locks and handles and hinges. For example, how strong is the Triad compared to Buck's lockback? What strengths do you lose, when you lose steel liners? Is this liner lock significantly more likely to close on my fingers than that frame lock during a mishap? I have guesses, but when knives are rather expensive, I'd like to have "data points" on such questions.
I almost alway custize the lock spring ( take pounds off while being careful to leave enough for blade retention ) .have the XHP Code 4 in my pocket right now !
Cold Steel`s new marketing slogan: "We make Sheeple SHIT THEIR PANTS !!!" :-) I currently own several CS large folders: A Gen 1 Voyager (5-in. blade) from around 1999 A Rajah 1 (6 inch blade) folding Kukri, beautiful knife, custom quality A Talwar (5 1/2 inch) folder, serious tactical blade I`m thinking that a Frenzy might find it`s way into my collection one of these days....

Why doesnt cold steel or anyone else for that matter made a decent fighting blade in automatic format? I have a boker ak 47 auto but i want something more like the cold steel Espada or voyager in a larger size for every day carry / defense. I like the easy and quick deployment of my boker.
Sorry for the question, but for soldier blade how are you going to stab someone with this when this knife barely has a guard? That is the reason they put big guard on fighting knives like USMC K-BAR etc..Very beautiful knife though, and calssic nutnfancy stile review!
Cold steels Espada (Large and XL) and Voyager are hands down the best combat folders ever made. A good knife for self defense needs to be large enough, heavy and razor-sharp. When pulled the size alone will easy intimidate the crap out of any attacker.

I love that you unapologetically review the knives that Lynn Thompson unapologetically makes!!!
Man cranking them vids out, thanks nutnfancy.
I own the blue and green frenzies and carry one every day. I love the Frenzy. Thank you Nutnfancy, great review as always.
Historically the weapon that inspired the Frenzy, a Kabutowari, is a battlefield blunt weapon meant to hit the armored enemy in the head, causing damage or at least disorientation so he would fall down. Hard to beat Cold Steel when it comes to value for money.

Agreed bro...no one does what they do
nutnfancy $239 is a ton of money for a blade... cold steel has alot of great value blades but i dont think the frenzy should be considered a value blade.

I'm watching every video you post. Tnp'r since year 1. Keep em coming Nutn! God bless you and yours.
I believe the difference between the Frenzy 1, 2, and 3 are merely the colors of the handle.
I recently went to the Stratosphere in Las Vegas NV. Christmas Eve to be exact. We were going up to the bar on the 107th floor 🍸 👍. Just got the Rajah II for xmas.. love it ! All my friends are so impressed. Merry Christmas and happy new year Nutn!
Cold Steel makes some nice "pocket swords."
Cold Steel knives are reliably sharp right out of the box.
I was wondering when you would review this blade. Awesome that you got around to it.
It's now 2020 and Cold Steel has been sold.
I hope their attitude survives!
Cold steel knives are my #1 brand of knives. Yes cheap, Yes boring. Yes ultra reliable. Yes the best knife for the money.

If you're on a tight budget the Voyager XL knives seem to frequently show up on ebay for undervalued prices.
I have no problem with big EDC knives, I carry a Cold Steel Voyager XL.
Sometimes it’s a must depending where u live
That's a good choice dude.
@Wōtan yes sheeple suck to have hanging around!
That OD handle is so damn cool I might pick this up even though I hate wharncliffe blades. Hopefully they will do that style of black and OD layered grips on other knives. I would grab that version of my CS AK-47 in a heartbeat. I also wish Cold Steel would do loop-over clips.

I really want a recon 1 in spear point with their new steel... alas, there are higher priorities
That would be my EDC choice. Meal prep etc i Usually have a fixed blade
love my CS spartan and XL voyager. cant believe i missed this vid for so many years!
OK Nutn I just scored the SMAEL black with orange numbers cuz of U. 👍👍 I was needing something tough but cheap in case I damage it getting rowdy at work as a CO. The big house is not a place to flash fancy watches. Thanks for the recommendation.

Cold steel Best knives for the money and strongest folders out there, there fixed blade are sick too
I carried a spyderco military in OEF. I liked the larger hole for use with gloves. I had a hard time with thumb stud knives while wearing gloves.
Cold Steel and Lynn C Thompson are still
the Knife Industry, Giant and true knife
and martial minded individuals appreciate
the products him and Andrew Demko bring
to the Knife Game .🎯
Knife comes out at 4:35

Now that Frenzy 2, yes sir. Absolutely
So happy you finally reviewed this knife, I’ve been on the fence since it came out.
I love Cold Steel. The Tanto Recon 1 is the best knife I have ever had.
I love Cold Steel. Nutn how would you compare this blade to the Cold Steel TiLite XI with g10 scales and the CTSXHP steel? awesome vid. Thanks.
I wish they kept this model instead of the other colors. The Green looks the best.
I have had my voyager xl tanto for 5 years and love it
Own it. Love it. Thx nutnfancy
Hey nutn... I like the steal liners in my Spyderco Stretch ZDP-189! It's "good" added weight!
all my wife and I carry are Cold Steel Recon 1, Tanto, half serrated.
So I bought a Frenzy in s35v I love it and a Espada in AUS10 I have hit the hard spot with trying to figure out what to carry most of the time im just lucky my Rajah in AUS10 is really have to carry daily or else it would be a stupid had time to pick what to carry.
Hey Nutn where is the WROV on those SMAEL watches, I haven't seen them, on you tube search, you posted them yet?
Will you do more backpacking vids?
Love the voyager, great blade, I’ve baton’d with that thing 😂😂
Just to point it out, that first Espada is the large not the extra large. There's a big difference. Big as in 5 inches of difference in overall length. The Voyager series has an extra large which has a 5 1/2 inch blade, whereas the 5 1/2 inch Espada is "large" and the "extra large" is 7 1/2 inches long.
All I know is.....I just ordered two SMAEL orange watches..... late Christmas 🎄 gift to me, that’s the only way I can justify it.
Wow 2011 I remember it like it’s today you and Hickok were my only interests after end of day formation.
I still EDC the Talwar XL.
Me too
How can you know if the item it's not fake coming from Amazon?
Love the looks of this knife! I will be adding one to my collection. BTW, I think the number refers to the color of the handle for this knife. It will go well with my Cold Steel XL Voyager (clip and tanto) and Rajah 1.
I also use the Cold Steel XL for deployments - this will probably be more pocket friendly
Utility-wise, a Wharncliffe is hard to beat.
My edc knife is the 4 inch voyager with the tanto blade. Chose the 4 inch because the 5.5 was too close in size to my rajah 2
Do a review on the new ruger pc 9mm rifle
Isn't the espada based on the navajah?
Solid! KRV
Great review, thanks. Blade is a bit large for me to carry though.
If you get one of these make sure you get a snaggle tooth pocket opener they're excellent
I edc rotation when I was in the army the CS ak-47 and the recon 1 clip point. And a benchmade grip when I was on base.
I have the frenzy 2 it's awesome.
Right on Fancy, another great blade vid.
Looks like a good letter opener....
I get alot more excited about Cold Steel when they're affordable. Not paying $150-175 CDN for that one.
The slight concave blade is to give a better bite in when cutting.
Can someone tell me when a tanto is a better choice for tactical/defense?
Ever think of taking the thumbstuds out and throwing a spyderco ziptie mod on there? Ive been wanting to do that to a few cold steels that arent waveable out of box. I know you've said recently you normally dont carry knives that arent waveable off the pocket and I have the same philosophy on my tactical blades.
The fuller on the frenzy could work well as a secondary manual opener instead of the studs

Just got mine, it is one bad ass knife.

I don't agree with your take on the POU, nutn. I think the frenzy would do well as a EMT or emergency tool. The point would allow the blade to slide under seatbelts and clothing.
Another COLD STEEL KNIVES fan HERE!!!!
Cool knives. Do you do your own engraving? Have you shown it a video?
Just rewatched your 10 tactical myths video. Anyway loved the Tier 7 concept, and you guys should make it a patch or something!
Oh, I found some such tests on BladeHq's Channel.
Hey Nutnfancy what's you opinions on TAC FORCE and ELK RODGE KNIFES!? I have the speedster model and Ballistic...
I almost alway custize the lock spring ( take pounds off while being careful to leave enough for blade retention ) .have the XHP Code 4 in my pocket right now !
Cold Steel`s new marketing slogan:
"We make Sheeple SHIT THEIR PANTS !!!" :-)
I currently own several CS large folders:
A Gen 1 Voyager (5-in. blade) from around 1999
A Rajah 1 (6 inch blade) folding Kukri, beautiful knife, custom quality
A Talwar (5 1/2 inch) folder, serious tactical blade
I`m thinking that a Frenzy might find it`s way into my collection one of these days....
I was really hoping it was smaller cause I want a smaller knife with the same lines
Cold steel Espada G10 or Benchmade Bedlam?
Wow. I am turning into a watch freak ! Love the look and function ..gotta have one. .. now the hard part ... the choice. LOL
Have you considered doing spotting scope reviews? Your one of the few that actually has the ranges (diatance) available to actually test them.
Espada is Spanish for 'sword'...appropriately named.
Leo Dei Talwar is Hindi for sword, another excellent cold steel folder
Great review.I would like to see a bit more belly on the blade and a deeper pocket clip.I have the Recon 1 Tanto XL and the same applies to the pocket clip and make the G10 much smoother under the pocket clip.If Cold Steel fixes those issues it would be near perfect. Also, Cold Steel Make a 4-inch AK47 folder too, please!!
That's just it!!! If you're not skinning out game, straight edge wharncliffe is the best shape to have! Hang your suggested changes! I love it AS IS
Do you Think, the frenzy will be Not destroyed in a hard selfdefense fight ????
Why doesnt cold steel or anyone else for that matter made a decent fighting blade in automatic format? I have a boker ak 47 auto but i want something more like the cold steel Espada or voyager in a larger size for every day carry / defense. I like the easy and quick deployment of my boker.
Hello. Love your videos!! Could you do a review on the Boker Plus Strike auto? Looks like an interesting knife
tough, inexpensive, and varied
Nutn you've gotta do the Benchmade Bugout, sub 2 ounces for SAWC excellence.
Nutn could you please do a review of the cold steel gi tanto, wanna hear your thoughts on it
Sorry for the question, but for soldier blade how are you going to stab someone with this when this knife barely has a guard? That is the reason they put big guard on fighting knives like USMC K-BAR etc..Very beautiful knife though, and calssic nutnfancy stile review!
