  • A Raytheon High-Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) has been mounted on a British Army combat vehicle and successfully test-fired.
    Using similar technology to the Royal Navy DragonFire laser, but designed for the Army, this new weapon is a lightweight portable system that can be fitted to a vehicle such as the Wolfhound and used to counteract drone threats.

      @@Ajwananownot sure to what extent you are joking. It might not be too far fetched as ‘lightsabers’ are scientifically possible. We just haven’t developed all of the necessary technologies to the right level to be able to make a working one like in the films.
      There are videos on RUclips that show some engineering type people putting one together. The main problem is they have to lug around a bulky power pack to power the super heated plasma stream that forms the blade. Containment for the plasma and heat management for the generator is also a problem and needs much improvement.
      Still pretty cool to see what sort of things can be made possible with a bit more advancement.

    A cup of tea being a standard British unit of measurement if anyone is wondering. Its equal to about 1.5 USD, 131 russian ruples or 0.92 euros.

    heres my problem. wont nations just start adding reflective coatings to the drones so it will just reflect?

    • @discipleaj
      @discipleaj Месяц назад

      You're talking serious amounts of radiation being pin pointed at a single spot on drone/airframe etc. It'll heat up really fast to the point where 'reflective paint' will be pointless due to the detection/stand-off range these weapons can be utilised within. Which is to say, the enemy can throw as much paint on as they like, but the airframe will still combust and be destroyed before it is anywhere its objective. NATO will only be making even stronger versions of this for ICBM's and larger airframes etc. (If they haven't got them already).
      The big test is not lots of reflective paint, but how it will handle swarm technology used against it - of which the yanks already have since (publicly) around 2013.

    It's good to see that things are moving on but lasers cannot be employed effectively in an environment affected by fog or battlefield smoke. Employment will give its position away making it vulnerable to counter battery fires. Of course this is true of other weapons systems...
