My comment is I was a cub scout in the mid sixties and I took a train ride just like this, and you see things you would never see otherwise or ever again. It holds dear to my soul. It brings tears to my eyes as well. Good morning and good night America. It's a heritage that will never come again but will never be forgot by any body that experienced it.
This song was written by Steve Goodman, who died way too early in his 30's. A lot of people have recorded this, including a great version by Willie Nelson. But Arlo made it famous. Steve was from Chicago (and a great Cubs fan). You can still take the The City of New Orleans train from Chicago to New Orleans, via Amtrak.
I asked a guitarist I saw walking down the street to play something. He played and sang this in the key of G and I began to move to the music with my wife. As I was, and as now tears. I looked it up never having never heard it before and wanting to know the lyrics. This music made my day. Thank you all for your comments.
I had the great pleasure of hearing Arlo's daughters, Sarah Lee and Cathy, perform this gem over the weekend at the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival in Mendocino County, California.
I live in Kankakee and right outta town south is a graveyard of old cars from the 50s and 60s that's still there today. I've been looking at those my whole life you can see them from 57 too
I have road the undergrounds here in the U.S. Everyone is either buried in the sports page or on their phone. I compare this to when I go to Italy where everyone has a conversation and their is a personal interaction. Pretty sad.
This is one of those rare songs that brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it, not because it's sad, but because it's so darned good
I operated Diesel Locomotives for 37 years. I love this song so much.
It brings a tear to my eye because these days are over, never to return.

This song is so moving. It brings tears to my eyes too. You can't help but sway to the music and these lyrics are beautiful........❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this song! Got to be 50 years old. Sounds as good now as it did then.
I think this song & Tracy Chapman's Fast Car are quite possibly the 2 best songs ever written.
One of the very few songs I can genuinely sing along too.
It may be the most American song ever. Thank you to Steve Goodman & Arlo Guthrie.
Such an evocative, well written piece of music!
The magic carpet made of steel. ♡
This phrase gives me a catch in my throat.
This wonderful song brings back memories that probably never existed. It is that good.
This song, any song about New Orleans, makes me think of my friend that loved New Orleans. Paula is gone now but not forgotten.
City of New Orleans is the route from Chicago to Nola

I love Arlo Guthrie's version best of this awesome song. ❤️
It was extremely popular in 1972 & has been covered by many famous artists since.
@@paulanoone817 John Frusciante’s live cover has the most charm, I think ♥️
@@jraby4436 So do I.
I rode this train many times and that picture painted by the lyrics gives an accurate vision of the reality of my journeys ❤️.
Love this song... so many good memories!
Thank you Mr. Arlo Guthrie, for such a beautiful song. Forever memorable.
Hopefully we will take a train to New Orleans. Is a dream.
Anything good is a day dream. I wish id known that I had no hope from 1976. Except for the lives I saved I'm a failure

Good morning America, how are you? That's a great question. Pass the bottle I think is the answer to that question.
When you're making a mix for the drive, include this one.
