As long as you don't penetrate into the party wall, or build off it, you won't need a party wall agreement. But it's not something to be afraid of. Your neighbours can't refuse for you to build on a party wall, and for the extra space it gives, it will almost always certainly be worth doing. In this project the local council planning authority didn't like me having a large dormer, it had to be 'subservient' to the dwelling so I had to build it inside the party wall line, hence no party wall award needed.
