As an employee of that location up until our closure. A: We found out 2 weeks before christmas B: This location closed due to the owner of the plaza racking up the rent and G.E. decided not to renew the lease for 2021
That giant eagle was the worst. 1 lane open prices too high. I remember JC Penney hills then Ames and callahans which was like a mini Dave and busters down there. It’s sad because it could still be such a great shopping center if the owner would sell and bring some nice restaurants and shops in there. I heard giant eagle left because the owner of the shopping center and something with the lease agreement. It’s sad to see because I grew up down there and still live in the area and it’s sad to see that place in such disarray. Love the videos keep it up
I think it closed because the Walmart opened nearby. Giant Eagle tried to prevent it with a zoning rule but Walmart found a loophole. It's on wikipedia on Giant Eagle under "criticism". Another great video Wallie. I like it when you delve into the history of these things.
Grew up in Freedom. Beaver Valley is like a time bubble, everything feels 50 years behind. Live in Columbus Ohio now. Bittersweet little reminders of "home". Thanks for the vids. Drone footage would be cool.
That's crazy to see that store closed. I used to go to that Giant Eagle (and Ames) with my grandma. I remember renting movies from the Iggle Video there. Good times.
Looking at The Times, that Giant Eagle was underperforming for several years. Also, the rest of the plaza being in the shape it was in also contributed to the store closing permanently. All 50 employees were offered positions at other locations throughout the region.
Enjoyed the video Wallie, thanks for getting out there for us! Astonishing that the Hallmark store outlasted Giant Eagle. Hmm.. And yes Sir, drone it up, sounds awesome!
There was a closed Giant Eagle on Lorain Ave in Cleveland by the abandoned Burger King you just visited. It is now a storage facility, 13820 Lorain Ave. When I was little it was another grocery store, Carl's Superstore.
I always wondered if the police came around when you were filming any places..i guess I know know ...yet another good video thanks guys for taking the time to do them
I remember back in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s how this GE was always crowded. It was a bustling grocery store, especially on a Sunday morning/afternoon. Everyone went there to grocery shop. They had most registers open and moved you through the line pretty quickly. As the 2010s arrived, their business really went downhill, and Walmart helped expedite their downfall when it opened in 2014. GE didn’t help itself much; grocery prices rose while more and more citizens in Beaver County retired and went on fixed incomes.
I think drone footage would be great idea especially in daylight. I always say when I hear “ Look at the front where it says Ames real big “ I know it going to be a great video. Sad to see all your childhood memories going away it’s the same way in my hometown but something new goes back to make new memories. Look forward to drone footage if you decide to do it. Thanks Wallie to you and Kayla for the great videos together stay safe.
The grocery store that was next to where Giant Eagle was, was a Shop & Save. The Ames location (now leveled) was Hills before that, and Grant's before that. Hills came to Northern Lights in 1977. Hills lasted until the chain went out of business in 1988. Then Ames took it over. The Ames store closed for good in 2002. Now that whole corner of Northern Lights has been demolished.
As far as I know, the Northern Lights Baden Giant Eagle closed because Giant Eagle corporate deemed that it wasn't profitable enough at the end of the day. The general population of Beaver Valley has decreased over the years as many residents moved away and the elderly are dying off and few replacing them. Marxists call this "capital flight", when investment capital goes elsewhere, seeking more lucrative profits in other locales, leaving abandoned ghost towns as the investment capital leaves.
I would love to see drone footage of the entire area, especially where the Ames used to be. Even though there's probably nothing to look at it would be pretty cool to see anyways.
I was wondering which Ames that intro was from, very nice. Did someone say wings yummy. Definitely drone footage would be awesome to see. This one closed and the one in City View Remains which i never understood. Might have to make my way out there sometime and see this area.
I used to live 10 to 15 minutes from the exact Giant Eagle. If I can recall, my aunt has shopped at that exact location a few times, but I never got the chance to go in there. It's a shame they closed :/.
Any idea why the owners of Northern Lights put up that brand new massive pylon sign a few years ago? It was like they were going to renovate, but the area was still extremely run down and economically depressed. A real head scratcher as to what retailers they thought they would attract???
Walmart was to be in the shopping center the lease with Giant Eagle did not permit another grocery store to be open in the shopping center. They bought the property from a doctors family and built the store to this day they are not allowed to put a sign on the shopping center marquee!! The last I had heard about the Giant Beagle was that the owners sold the franchise back to corporate Giant Eagle and they in turn closed it down as they have a store in Rochester and in Sewickley that do a lot more business.
Wallie B26 had to eat all them wings cause that's the only day this week he's going to eat LOL cause we know he always tends to find all these abandoned restaurants
this made me mad, because GIANT EAGLE made a big stink about walmart being in the shopping mall with them, so walmart destroyed a beautiful hill and wildlife habitat to build the walmart up the hill, which is really difficult for locals without a car, to walk up the huge hill
Might be a good place for a community theatre once live theatre can happen again. I've thought for awhile that the Ames on 224 in Edinburgh would make a good community theatre, especially since Lawrence County only has one, but the fact that it's so close to the New Castle Playhouse, and the fact that New Castle Playhouse is so established, kind of makes it unlikely. I mean obviously Youngstown has quite a few but that's a much larger city than New Castle and Mahoning is a way bigger county than Lawrence. Beaver County does have two theatres: The one in Rochester I can't remember the name of, and Red Barn Players in Fombell, but Beaver is such a large county I think it could handle another one
This was an independent Giant Eagle. I shopped here from 2010-2015. When I was shopping here the one employee told me that the independent owners were in their mid 70's and he told me that that the mom and pop owners were waiting to retire in 2020. My guess is that they closed it and corporate did not want to take it over as Rochester GE is 3 miles away and Leetsdale GE is 6 miles away. This is in Baden/Conway PA. This is sad as it was old but nice and clean.
This store opened as independent location (#680), but was transferred to corporate (and became #75) about the same time Chippewa (#686 to #66), Rochester (#655 to #62) and Moon (#642 to #68) all reverted to corporate ownership.
There's the reason it left the walmart is too close. Greedy eagle doesn't like it when competitors are close by so it can keep charging you an arm and leg.
As an employee of that location up until our closure.
A: We found out 2 weeks before christmas
B: This location closed due to the owner of the plaza racking up the rent and G.E. decided not to renew the lease for 2021
The owners hiked the rent??? On that property? They should have been begging stores to move in to save the property.
I actually worked at the old Hills department store while in high school, good old days
That giant eagle was the worst. 1 lane open prices too high. I remember JC Penney hills then Ames and callahans which was like a mini Dave and busters down there. That’s what I think too. Soon as Walmart moved in they lost business and couldn’t stay open 24hrs no more. Now it’s all gone.
Worked there at an old Sears auto center, out building . We converted it to a Goodyear store, 1972
I hope a Meijer comes in the Pittsburgh Area!! The Boardman, Ohio location opens up on May 13th.
So many good memories from working at the Dirty Bird aka Giant Eagle in high school.
Great vid ah the eagles nest and video rental section the memories from my young son in the 90s in our giant eagle! Be safe Wallie and Kayla.
Look at the fence where it says KEEP OUT real big.
You are so right about Beaver County betting old.... Another place that brings you back 40 years is Burgettstown.
I love watching these abandoned places of Ohio videos.
This is Baden Pa about 20 minutes from my home
@@matthewcaughey8898 close enough lol jk
Love drone footage. Awesome video Wallie!
Good times.
I would like to see drone footage of giant Eagle and the surrounding area.
I miss playing Nintendo 64 in the Eagles Nest while my parents spent too much money on groceries
Same
Thanks for sharing this wallie a driod footage would be awesome never heard of gaint eagle but that is pretty cool building inside.
Yes!
Drone footage of everything!
Looking at The Times, that Giant Eagle was underperforming for several years. Also, the rest of the plaza being in the shape it was in also contributed to the store closing permanently. All 50 employees were offered positions at other locations throughout the region.
I would love to see drone footage. Also, a cool idea would be to do a before and after shot of that shopping center!!!
Wings are awesome especially the wings from ponderosa
Enjoyed the video Wallie, thanks for getting out there for us! Astonishing that the Hallmark store outlasted Giant Eagle. Hmm.. And yes Sir, drone it up, sounds awesome!

i feel like you should do a before and after for the northern lights shopping centre then go into the drone footage of it currently
I enjoyed this video. Yes, I'd like to see a drone video of the old shopping center. Take care!
The memories of playing in the Eagles Nest, playing the PS2 on an old RCA TV... the memories, the feels! 😭😭😭
I know for our store it used to have one with a wii and some leapster gaming system but then it got changed into an extended beer cooler
I always wondered if the police came around when you were filming any places..i guess I know know ...yet another good video thanks guys for taking the time to do them
I left Ambridge in 1982. So sad to see how Northern Lights has gone downhill.
Like to see drone shots it’s a shame that a lot of stores closing up maybe no business rent to high who knows thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks for posting a new video ❤️

The railfan and drone shots would be cool.you should also do old factory sites like J L or us steel sites,There are plenty in the tri state area.
Sad to see northern lights fall so far.I used to work at Whitlock auto parts in the 90s.The new Walmart is nice but did not help the shopping center
Yes it would be cool for drone footage.
Yes I would like to see drone footage of the area thanks like all your videos
Nice work Wallie

Wallie, first of all that'd be cool to see the tops of the buildings with your drone! Really enjoyed your video! I love trains too!

Drone footage would be awesome. Would also like to see a walk thru of Meijer store.
2 Giant Eagles stores closed up a few years ago in the Toledo Ohio area. Those buildings are still empty to this day.
Great job 👍👏
I would love to see drone footage of the entire area, especially where the Ames used to be. Even though there's probably nothing to look at it would be pretty cool to see anyways.
So sad that these stores leave i never get to shop at them
Used to be a Goodyear in Windsor, VT.....
I was wondering which Ames that intro was from, very nice. Did someone say wings yummy. Definitely drone footage would be awesome to see. This one closed and the one in City View Remains which i never understood. Might have to make my way out there sometime and see this area.

Yes drone footage is your best
Heck yeah Wallie, drone footage would be awesome!
That would be nice to see for the drone and to see the railroad
My daughter's barber shop is around the corner from the Dollar Tree on the left we just pulled out of there also after 30 years
Even Parkway Centre still has a Giant Eagle. You know it's bad when they leave.
They built a well stocked, clean Walmart right next door to this location.
@@weirddreams487 there's a walmart in parkway center now?
Please do drone footage! I miss Northern Lights especially Hills/Ames and all the great stores they had. Great video too!

I filmed there at this plaza near the Norfolk southern rail yard area !
Great video!
i wonder how old that vaccum cleaner sitting inside the entrance is :P

Haven’t seen that center since college
I shocked at the condition
Imagine back in the day when the shopping center sign said Hills, and then Ames!
A great Video I would like to see drone footage Love The Channel Wallie

Giant Eagle? More like Giant Leavel.
And dang Wallie, you sure were hungry, I guess the food industry didn't neglect you after all.
Next to giant eagle was a shop and saves, Ames use to be Hills

Did you have wings from Primanti Bros or Quaker Steak and Lube?
btw i would love to see more railfanning on this channel
i also live next to a Union Pacific Main Line
oh yea as i was typing a train screeched to a halt
dunno wat that was about
I would like to see drone footage
Should come back thru warren ohio we have plenty abandoned places for you to see.
Wallie is something going on the Ames parking lot since they fenced it off
There is nothing going on, they just don’t want people driving around in the gravel.
Giant Eagle has closed several stores here in Columbus in the last few years
Can you and Kayla go film at an abandoned Weis market? They are the eastern PA Giant Eagle
Yeah that would be awesome
Drone would be nice. Be well and happy.
