They have two songs that are all in English: 'Don't Let Me Down' and 'The Dragon Cries' (awesome songs).
English speakers tend to get a bit huffy when bands don't sing in English - here's the thing:
Just view the vocals as another instrument, providing the melody line! It really doesn't matter if you understand it or not,
and lyrics are easy to find on the internet nowadays 🙂
Enjoying your reactions, looking forward to more! PO!

Just to clarify, I don’t think you are saying the reactors were getting huffy about the non-English. I think they were just speculating that BM could break through more easily if they sang in English, or just wondered what it would sound like.

Personally, after listening to this band for over a year, I wouldn’t want them to sing all English. There’s something beautiful with the Japanese language. I appreciate the few English words Miku includes and I make the effort to learn a few Japanese words to better appreciate their art.
    Cocoro = Heart ❤️
    Mata = Again ❤❤
Yes, Band Maid sounds that good live. I’ve heard them firsthand. One of their finest songs is “Moratorium” and there is a live video available!
This crowd had no idea who Band Maid was. This was their first appearance; being the first Japanese band to play a Lollapalooza since X Japan way back in 2010, and the very first all-female Japanese group ever. There were a few Maidiacs in the crowd, (one in his own battle armor), but I’m sure they made a few new fans that day.

The 1st Japanese band to appear at Lollapalooza in 13 years, the previous one was X-Japan, one the best known rock bands in Japan.
They have been to the US a lot in the last two years. They did tour at the end of 2022, starting with the Aftershock festival where they met The Warning. (the bands are fans of each other). Then they went back to Japan and opened for Guns N' Roses in December. Then in January they had a concert at Tokyo Garden Theater their biggest venue up to that point. Came back to the US in February to open at 3 concerts for The Last Rock Stars, a Japanese supergroup including Yoshiki from X-Japan. And while here they filmed part of the MV for "Memorable". Came back to the US in May and appeared at 3 festivals and 6 concerts. Came back in August to do Lollapalooza and did 7 more concerts in the US then finished in Mexico City. They also were doing concerts in Japan. 2023 was their 10th anniversary so they the finished the year at Yokohama Arena, 3.5 hours, 33 songs and their biggest venue. And one final concert in Hong Kong in December. One of the US festivals was the one-day Pointfest where the featured act was Incubus. The lead guitarist of Incubus came to watch Band-Maid and posted about them on Instagram. So in 2024, Band-Maid is the special guest at Incubus's Japan concert.
Can you tell they work hard?

Band Maid was billed to perform around 1:45p on Friday (Day 2 of 5), and after performing 15 hours earlier at the Lolla "Aftershow." So, people were still entering the venue resulting in a small crowd when the show began. By the end of the 1 hour set, there were a few more folks stopping by, unknowingly realizing that they were seeing a historic event, of Band Maid conquering the World, Po! For the audio/video production here, they were at the mercy of the Hulu broadcast. So, yes, this is raw and not post-produced. They've been around 10 years and have played a lot of festivals in Japan. They were _supposed_ to play Inkarceration in 2020 but that got postponed, so they played Aftershock in '22 and Rockville, Pointfest, Sonic Temple, and Lollapalooza in '23. Outdoors is different, for sure. There's no walls, no back wall, no ceiling to contain the sound. Everything you put out there just evaporates into space. It's weird.
They are Japanese and I don't think they ever thought they would be as popular in the west as they are now. They work very hard at English but it doesn't come naturally. Saiki wrote the lyrics for "Hate?" This is from an interview with Band-Maid in Natalie on September 22, 2022:
Saiki: _HATE? felt aggressive like “THE Band-Maid song” already from the demo stage, and I just had something that pissed me off right then (laughs), so I expressed my irritation in the lyrics. Also, I simply wanted to include the phrase “I hate you”._
Kanami: _It’s a phrase that makes you want to sing (laughs)._
Kobato: _It’s hard to find any other song where you can shout “I hate you” this many times, po._

I find it funny when people say they're all tiny. Misa, the bassist, is 5'7", which is tall for a woman in Japan, but about average for North America. Miku Kobato's lyrics mix English and Japanese in interesting and poetic ways. Miku uses English and Japanese homophones as well inter language puns. However, the lyrics for "HATE?" were written by lead singer Saiki Atsumi. Saiki and Miku often collaborate on lyrics, but will also write in competition with each other and let their band mates vote on which lyric to use.
I saw Band-Maid play at a small hall in Detroit two months prior to this Chicago show. These ladies are amazing live performers, total professionals. The Maids produce themselves, they have creative control over their music. This was not always the case. For their first two years, their management did not let them perform their own compositions, but in 2015 they performed "Alone", a song they wrote themselves. Since then they have written and recorded somewhere around 100 songs. Their songwriting is exceptional. Maidiacs will tell you that Band-Maid doesn't write bad songs, but lead guitarist Kanami Tono says that they do, it's just that the bad songs all wind up at the bottom of vocalist Saiki Atsumi's trash can.
The more you learn about this band the more amazed you will become.

  • @KittyKarenpoo

They are always best live. The feed from the amps and mics go through a mixer, and the engineer has access, in order to remix it later, which is certainly what they do. As you know from being on stage, there are 3 sound systems: The audience, the band and the personal amps. A mix to a separate track recorder would be a 4th. Love them live. Freedom, Domination, Manners with Black Hole, all are far better on official live tracks. The only track of theirs that I like better studio is Daydreaming.

MISA is around 5'8", so she can more than handle that heavy bass. OTOH, the PRS Custom 24 is a fairly small guitar, but Kanami is only 5'1", so it all works out.

Introducing The Band... (left to right on the stage)
Misa [mee-sah] (Barefoot Assassin) - Bass Guitar
Miku [mee-kuu] (Small Pigeon) - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist, Band Founder
    Akane [aah-kah-nay] (Gorilla) - Drums
    Saiki [sigh-kee] (Sai-Chan) - Lead Vocals
Kanami [kah-nah-mee] (Mincho) - Lead Guitar, Songwriter
As others have commented, Band-Maid does have two songs sung entirely in English. This song, Hate, has many English words and phrases. "Why don't you try to understand me", "I don't care if you die out", "I hate you I hate you I hate you I". It is said that lead singer Saiki helped to come up with these lyrics after someone cheated on a friend of hers. It just goes to say, don't pi** off Saiki. The bass vs guitar battle in this song with Saiki hyping it up in the background is a pretty epic move for the first band of the day at Lollapalooza! BTW... This Lollapalooza was in Chicago 2023.
The band calls the contrast between their cutesy maid costumes and their hard rock sound "the gap". They enjoy seeing the confused looks on people's faces when they walk on stage and the reaction when they start playing with their hard rock sound. They call their fans Masters and Princesses, which refers to the maid cafe that band founder Miku Kobato worked in when she envisioned a rock and roll group with the maid cafe image and aesthetic. Us fans mainly refer to ourselves as Maidiacs.

Yeah, that does take some getting used to - Japanese/English vocals - the main thing is how well the lyrics fit rhythmically and sonically in the overall mix of the composition. At this point it is part of who they are and how they sound.

I think you may have misunderstood about Miku's "idol" history. She didn't win a Japanese version of American Idol. Miku was part of an "idol" group prior to forming Band-Maid, but "idol" groups in Japan are not related to the American meaning of that word. Idol culture refers to a school-like system that trains young people in various fields, especially music, acting and modeling. The idol classes are based on a secondary educational system that exists alongside but outside of the regular school system. Idol groups are treated with a certain level of celebrity in Japan, and several major artists and bands have arisen from the idol system, perhaps most notably BABYMETAL. But no, Japanese idol groups are not a Japanese version of American Idol, they just share a word in common.

They have stuff in English. However, way back before they wrote their own songs, they did one in English called, 'Don't Let Me Down'. But the lyrics are of a very sexual nature, and they really didn't quite get just how sexual it was. So now that they're writing their own songs they sprinkle in maybe 25% English in with the Japanese, but they know what they're saying because they wrote it. And they're very careful in choosing which lyric should be in English. Anyway, don't take this the wrong way, I know you guys are new, but about the worst thing you can do as a reactor is talk over solos. They made a T-Shirt for it. It says, "Shut Up! Kanami is speaking." MISA doesn't sing and Kanami almost never does, so that's their time to speak to us through their instruments. Yes, they are LIVE, but BAND-MAID do play to Backing Tracks, unless the airlines looses the suitcase that has the computer in it. Then they have to rearrange the set list a little.

Yes there are Maid Cafés in Japan, escpeciaöy Tokyo, but not in the small City where Miku was Born. This was one of many reasons why she wanted to go to Tokyo. And it wasn't such a bad idea to war Maid Outfits. It was simply an additional Gimick so that people remembered the Band better. But it was a Problem, that with the exception of Kanami(Guitar) non of the member heard about this before the audition. This is one of the reSons why Miku and Kanami really follow this rule till toda while Saki, Misa and Akane more or less dropped this rule after some time.
And the english japanese Problem is not as big as you might think. English is the language of the World and japanese schmolz Arendt the only Schokolade that teich english as the first foreign language. In fact sometimes japanese adopts sometimes english words so fast that japanese children no longer have the typical problems that were originally common in south-east asia. If I would compare it with BabyMetal, they use english in all their Shows worldwide, even in Japan. This is only not as obvious since they didn't do this originally. No one presumrd that they would become the biggest japanese Band internationaly. But then they decided to switch for the Callouts, when everyone has to understand them they would switch to english. Su also takes care that at the start and the end of thete Shows, she would speak the language of the country where they are. If necessary a stage Hand has to deliver a suitable translation, but they also have their own trabslators. They are no longer children and you might be surprised how Well english is normally inderstood.
And Band Maid is one of the tightest Bands that you can find. They are simply a bit overqualified. While Kanami writes their songs (normally on a piano) but in reality 4 of their members can compose. So Miku writes the lyrics, Misa changes the parts of her base guitar, so that she always hdlp the instrument that might Requiem her help and Akane then Triest to add her drums wherever they .ight fit.

For most of the world, listening to music in a foreign language is quite normal, cause most of the songs are in English. And even if the listeners can understand English, it's not their native language.
I am from Germany and can understand English quite well, but when I listen to a song, most of the lyrics flow by and are not translated in my brain. My first listens are just about the music and the melody.
I don't know if others can confirm that but for me that's the case, so there is no real difference between a rock song in English, Spanish or Japanese. I cannot imagine how it feels when you instantly recognize the words and meaning of each song in the radio. 😂😂😂

Maid cafes are sort of like theme restaurants such as Hooters. Emphasis on the "sort of".

Western bands who have been touring Japan since 1966, No one sang in Japanese!! So why should the Japanese sing in English when they are on tour?
The Maidiacs learn the lyrics in Japanese and sing along in Japanese!! This is also true of the other bands that toured the US last.
There were 5 Japanese bands and 1 Korean band that toured the US successful last year.
The lead guitarist and bassist began piano lesson when they were 3 yo.

There is one song that Band Maid's sings in English only. That song is "The Dragon Cries". It's a song written specifically as a warning about what is happening to our planet and the hate that authoritarian politicians have wreaked on our world.

This is way out of leftfield compared to BAND-MAID, but since your husband loves *Godzilla,* try the song 'Tokyo Calling' by *Atarashii Gakko.* They are sort of an idol group that is completely uninterested in sounding or behaving like J-pop idols. They are closely involved with the creation of their songs and do all of their own choreography. 'Tokyo Calling' is a very early *Godzilla* inspired music video.

No they have never sung a song completely in English. They use english and phonetic speech sounds that just about any country can sing to get better audience participation in countries that do not speak Japanese example oooh, aah, la. For a Japanese Band that always sings in English check out Love Bites.

He was just inquiring. I don’t mind that the band speaks in Japanese and English combine I think it’s pretty cool, but thank you for the suggestion.🤘🏻🎶❤️

None of them is fluent in English. Saiki doesn't really like singing in English. Japanese lends itself to singing -- like Italian does. No clumps of consonants -- lots of singable vowels.
Did you notice the scar on Miku's face? She is very accident prone.

English is not a point when talking about these japanese bands. Their music is so much more.

I have been digging deeper into the band and they’re amazing. I love them just because they absolutely kill. It doesn’t matter about the lyrics, but my fiancé is new to the band so he was just inquiring 😉🎶🤘🏻❤️

The Dragon Cries is all in English. I've heard it called old fashioned blues rock but I think it's more acid rock like Hendrix or Iron Butterfly.
