    I am 65 years old and had the privilege of growing up listening to Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, King Crimson and so many others. As I used to say, I grew up in the time when music was being made.
    I don't get tired of listening, some after 50 years, with the same amazement as the 1st time.
    But most of all, I like to see these kids being amazed by the quality of the music. It's a sign that it's really good!

    Probably the most timeless lyrics in rock history.
    They were true yesterday, they are true today and will be true tomorrow.
    Italian writer Italo Calvino explains what exactly is meant by the term "classical work", and offers this definition:
    "A classic is a work that has never finished saying what it has to say".

    • @rorycallaghan5719
      @rorycallaghan5719 3 года назад

      Nice summary, plus you mentioned an author that I love for his playfully quirky yet deeply insightful works. Speaking of time...one of my favourite songs here somewhat meshes with one of my favourite short stories by Calvino, A Sign in Space (somewhat, since one is about the human perspective of time passing and the other is decidedly not, but still relatable).
      Just wanted to say thank you, instead of one nostalgic trip down memory lane I am now enjoying two simultaneously!!

    • @mikeharry1799

      Italo Calvino? Is he the guy that did like 'scientific' fairy tales? He was pretty out there...

    • @thepragmatic6383
      @thepragmatic6383 2 года назад +1

      @@mikeharry1799 Calvino has always been drawn to popular literature, the world of fable in particular. In a majority of his writings, the narration is done on two levels: fabulous story, but also allegorical and symbolic.
      The allegorical style consists in expressing a thought in a pictorial form in order to understand, another meaning, which is the one intended by the text.
      Roger Waters seems to use the allegorical style in his lyrics, especially with the Animals album, but also with Dark Side of the Moon.

    Great gig in the sky next

  • @flubblert
    @flubblert 3 года назад +20

    Now you see what I'm talking about. The full Sonic and production value of the studio versions tend to get lost in the overwhelming sensory overload of the live concert. Especially if you weren't actually there to experience the full 360° surround audio setup they had in the stadiums. "Great Gig in the Sky" is next on this 'Dark Side of the Moon' album.
    Listening to and reacting to the full album is a great idea!! Start with "Speak to Me/Breathe, and work your way through to 'Great Gig in the Sky" which is the last track of the first side. All tracks bleed into each other so you never really get a chance to come up for air. Full immersive experience!! Then you could do side two perhaps as a second separate reaction, starting with "Money" and just letting it play out. Anyway, great job!! 👍

    The studio version of Time is from the Dark Side of the Moon album. It might say “remastered in 2011” or something like that, but the album (including Time that you just listened to) was released in 1973. I have seen Pink Floyd live in the US two times. Strange how "time" plays tricks with your memories.
    I really don't remember this although I remember both nights distinctively. If that makes any sense.
    Let me explain.
    I saw Led Zeppelin during their legendary 1977 North American tour at Madison Square Garden during 1 of the 6 sold out shows. No it was not the night they recorded their "live" material. A tremendous concert, powerful, high energy, unforgettable, mindblowing.
    What I seem too have trouble remembering is the "time" frame between 2 tremendous events.
    I will be damn if I remember these 2 shows being within 3 weeks of each other.
    Pink Floyd, Phillys Spectrum, "In the Flesh" tour promoting the "Animals" album. Simply the best concert I have ever had the pleasure of attending.
    I remember both, and will never forget them. But being only 3 weeks apart?
    I really don't recall that.
    Thank God this dinosaur still has at least 2 brain cells left too remember those 2 distinct nights.

    Here is my good and bad news. I saw Pink Floyd debut this Album in West London in 1973. I also saw Led Zeppelin around then in North London. I saw both Deep Purple and the following week Creedence Clearwater Revival at the World Famous: Royal Albert Hall in London and those 4 Concerts to see 4 of THe World's TOP Bands cost ????
    £2.25 OR UNDER THREE DOLLARS TO WATCH ALL 4 CONCERTS !!!!!.The "bad" news is that the last 45 years have flown by and now I am 67 years old in London. haha

    Headphones are probably the best way to listen to Pink Floyd. The only thing I think would be better would be a full surround sound system. When they played live they used a quadrophonic sound system. Basically surround sound in the 70’s. Rick Wright had a toggle on his keyboards that let him send the sound wherever he wanted to.

    I have that cover art on my black marble headstone, over my name. To me it shows a narrow, pure light shooting upwards to birth. Thus the Pyramid, the symbol of life. You then pass through life having experiences. You then leave, heading down to death, with all the color's meaning a life experience. The brighter the color's, the brighter the life.

    Nice reaction Bruh. You know man this song is so timeless, (pun intended), lol, it could easily be released today and still be relevant! It's crazy that it was released 48 years ago, in 1973. I was 17 years old and a mega Pink Floyd fan att. This album, 'Dark Side of the Moon', has broken all kinds of records in the Rock & Roll history books and beyond, and It propelled Pink Floyd to international fame.
    It has been certified 14 X Platinum the UK, and topped the US Billboard Charts for top LPs, for a total of 957 weeks, and it's one of the best selling albums of all time in any and every musical category! In 2013 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
    This album made the members of Pink Floyd famous world wide, plus made each member of the band multi-millionaires overnight.
    To really get an idea of the ramifications of the album , just Google 'Dark Side of the Moon' and read the kind of impact this album had on society in general, and the music industry in particular. Not to mention all the records the album broke, and still hold today, 48 years later!

    For rock/prog guitarists of the time, Gilmour was the best "lead guitarist". Howe was a better all around guitarist. Other guitarists were faster or flashier, but Gilmour was spot on in hitting the right tone and melody. You can tell this is true, because Gilmour is the one that people will whistle or hum his leads after hearing them, without even realizing they are doing it.

    I like how you seemed to mock the song up until the beat kicked in. Time. They make us wait for the interesting bit.

    A classic of classics. Wish more young people realized that and not the shit of today like Bieber and Drake. Back when life was good.

    HEADPHONES!!!! Those are buds. Get a set of GOOD quality HEADPHONES. Ones that COVER your ears. You won’t regret it. You can thank me by reacting to some David Bowie. Like, Lady Grinning Soul would be a good choice.

    Zeppelin and the Beatles are the best in the 3rd dimension. Pink floyd is a 4th dimensional band. When a band takes you out of your body, that is the 4th dimension in music.

    You know your music bruh! tell ya a secret about Pink Floyd, why their music is head and shoulders above all other Rock bands. Their song writer and bass guitar Roger Waters said in the 70s he in an interview, that they mix Jazz, Blues, Funk and some elements from Rock music, he said we can't put a certain label on the shit we play .. Rock bands like the beatles, led zeblin , rolling stones , etc ... they all weren't anywhere near Pink Floyd! Waters and Gilmore looked up to the King himself Jimi Hendrix .. I wish if they did some with Hendrix, too bad the man died too early!
