This video helped me a lot. I'm researching my D90 upgrade, and one of the things concerning me is losing my 70-200/2.8 by moving to a different brand, so I'd like to stay with Nikon. I'm just an amateur, and don't have the stomach for a lot of $3-4k lenses.
After watching this, it looks like my 70-200 will remain quite usable, so I just need to find something reasonable in the lower zoom range.

I have the old FTZ adapter and use it wih the 200-500mm on my Z6ii. Great idea to use the 70-200mm VRii for video, I'll give it a try.

I bought the FTZII and I don’t even have a Z camera. I’m hoping to have a Z9 by summer, but wanted to be able to use my F glass the day I get the Z9. I’ll sell my D850 then and use those funds for the Z100-400.

Brilliant video again Adrian. I have the original FTZ adaptor but haven't used it for ages. The tripod plate is a real pain. In fact I've sold nearly all my old "F" mount lenses now anyway so it probably won't get a run anytime soon. I don't have any long focal length lenses these days so it's not such an issue for me. I think your use case scenario makes perfect sense with the new adaptor.

Thanks for watching Richard. It'll do the job for now. Eventually I'll get the Nikon Z 20mm F1.8 S lens for astro like the one you work your magic with. I think Nikon have a Z 200-600mm coming out which I'll be interested in seeing. Then I dare say I might be selling off a lot of my F mounts with the exception of keeping the 70-200mm F2.8. Amazing lens. Of course this all depends on Nikon releasing a cheaper version Z9 like camera down the track I can use for birds and wildlife. Hope you have an awesome Sunday mate, cheers 🙏📸

I have experienced no issues with the original FTZ on my Z50. Yes I get some focusing motor noise when using my Sigma 150-600 but if I ever use this for video the sound is not an issue. Since I use the lens tripod mount here the tripod mount on the adaptor is a non issue also. I also use my Sigma 10-20 for video but I haven't noticed any noise from this lens. If I'm not using a radio microphone I normally use a Rode shotgun microphone on the camera. One of the great revelations using the Z50 FTZ combination was using some of my 1970s vintage Nikon glass particularly a lovely 180 mm f/2.8 prime.

  • @anlsahal4147
    @anlsahal4147 2 года назад +1

I use a Sigma 24-35 F2 lens with the orijinal ftz adapter. It is a big and heavy lens with a 82mm filter thread. The tripod mount of the adapter is useful for balancing the lens. They form a straight line and the camera doesn't face forward down.

Hi Adrian, a great video! Adapters are generally fantastic. I used a lot of different ones for years on my Sony cameras for my old lenses from my analogue photography time. For some of my old Minolta AF lenses even autofocus worked with the right adapter. But I'm quite positively surprised how good and especially fast autofocus worked on your adapter. This seems to be a really good one. Thank you for sharing!
    Nice greetings,

Hi Adrian, another good video as always. I have the Z6II and use the first FTZ and yes it can be a nuisance using it with a tripod. Also have D850, I use the D850 quite a lot for sport able to crop and not lose much detail in images, I also use the Nikon 80-400mm lens what f stop do you find the best peak performance f5.6 or above I do find images can be a little soft at 400mm? Apart from FTZ and tripod problems do you think the FTZII helps in picture quality in any way?

  • @NikonDave
    @NikonDave 2 года назад +2

Luckily, my wife introduced me to photography so as long as I remember to share, we stay married. I bought the 100-400mm and like it well enough but I'm not looking to unload the 80-400mm f anytime soon. It just has a certain character I've not found with any other lens of that range. Put it on any of the full frame Z's and it the lens finds new life. The FTZII is a must have if you add grips or l-brackets. No more digging through the bag to find my tools to add/remove the brackets every time I want to change lenses.

I rarely use my original FTZ with my Nikon Z6ii as I bought the 24-70 and 70-200mm 2.8's, the only time I've used it was with my Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 and it worked beautifully for a little video. But after seeing this I may bring it out for some landscapes with the Sigma. When I get my Z9 I may also have to get the FTZII just to use my Sigma.

Great Video as always, Adrian! We laughed out loud about the C-3PO comparison. I like the design of the FTZ II but I think I'll stay with my (3) original FTZ adaptors. They work fine with no interference with my Sunway foto L-Brackett for my Z6. Where I have problems is on my Z50. Can't use my 3-legged thing Zayla L bracket with the FTZ. But Nikon has finally added an ultra-wide DX lens to their roadmap so when that comes out finally, I'll buy that instead and bring my Z50 back into service as my landscape photography camera with no adaptors at all. I already have the 16-50 and 50-250 Z DX lenses. The ultra-wide on the roadmap is a Z DX 12-28 so that's 18-42mm full-frame equivalent. Not as wide as my 11-16 Tokina gets me with its 16.5-24mm full-frame equivalent but I can work with 18mm. Whoops, I appear to have gone down a rabbit hole over here. I just wanted to say the Z DX 12-28 should eliminate my need for an FTZ II. Thanks, Adrian!

    • @adrianalfordphotography

Thanks Phil. Yeah if the FTZ is working ok for you, then no need to upgrade. Especially if you're planning on going for Z lens purchases from here on in. Hope you had fun while you were away with the fam, and glad you liked the 3PO joke. Cheers and have a great week.

Hi Adrian, got it spot on with that divorce comment. 😁👍 However, I think that to do your z7 justice, I would buy 70-200mm E FL, a newer version of VRII. It's sharper than v2., doesn't focus breath and your z7 will squeeze a lot of details out of it. Most importantly, used ones are reasonably priced on ebay compared to S line.

The FTZ and FTZ II are great. I don’t think many realise how well the work with F mount lenses. Like native in my experience.
Also I think Nikon has been unfairly treated because they stopped supporting screw drive lenses. Things change, and Nikon has supported their F mount for 60 years. Time for a change.
Also AF-S lenses, which are fully supported by the FTZ, has been the core of Nikons lenses for the last 15-20 years.

    Splendid review and images!
I am considering the adapter for a Z6ii and my beloved 80-200 2.8 AF Nikon lens.
This lens however is not a VR version.
If I may ask you I have a question regarding the slight subject tracking I see on the video of a bird, where your frame motion is very smooth.
With this type of a long lens did you achieve this with along lever on your tripod, or is the VR of your lens also a significant factor to image stability?

Interesting to hear about your lens choices. Upgrading to the 24-120 Z makes sense considering how much you use this focal length for landscapes while continuing using your F-mount teles. As I enjoy shooting wildlife, like many, I am hoping for an animal eye-AF and blackout free viewfinder to make it down from the Z9 to a more affordable option.

I have a specific need to take photos looking down at townships. For example, Townsville, Charters Towers and Rockhampton. I find the new Z mount 70-200 F2.8 and the new 100-400 just too expensive and Nikon don't look like coming out with a 70-200 F4 any time soon.

Does the FTZII work on the Z 7II body? I ran across a video last week that said it works on the Z6 and Z7, but does not work on the Z7II. HEP ME! HEP ME! Getting ready to push the button to buy a Z7II and need to know if the FTZII mount adapter works FLAWLESSLY on the Z7II?

To my understanding the FTZII should work on all Z mount cameras. It worked on my Z7 and a Z50 and Z6II I've used.

@@adrianalfordphotography Thank you! Looking back over my notes, it is the Z7 Vertical Battery Grip that does not work on the Z7II, the contacts are located in a different place from what I have read. Thanks for clearing up the FTZII fitment question for me.

I hv 5600 dslr, planning to buy a lens..... Finally understood there is no point in spending money on F mount lens..... I can't afford to buy both mirrorless camera & mirrorless lens in one go...... Is there any solution to use z lens on dslr camera

I've got my DSLR trinity lens set and I just can't make the leap to all new lenses. I'm considering the z7II but I need to know that the adapter is rock solid otherwise there's no point in getting a new body.
Any thoughts on the matter? Does that extra extension create additional stress on the mounting interface?

I’ve used all three of my F trinity lenses on the Z7 with no issues. Obviously with the 70-200mm you don’t hold or mount the camera body. Hold or mount lens on tripod.

@@Camrographer Z lenses are best on the native Z mount cameras and more silent. I had no issue with accuracy with F mounts on my Z7. I suggest you borrow or hire a Z camera with FTZ for a weekend and see how yout F mounts go.

@@Camrographer Hi Mike, just got a Z6ii and FTZ II adapter, and want to ask what lenses comprise the F trinity? I already own a F-mount 20mm prime and a Tamron 24-70 (which is a tad heavy, if you know what I mean...). Do you notice any quality loss using the F mounts on your Z camera? Thanks.

Not sure what it was when I did this video Dave. I know I had an issue when I put it on the Nikon Z50, but a firmware update on that camera fixed it, no worries. Runs all my F mounts now on that camera.
