- Pussycat was a Dutch pop group from Brunssum in Limburg led by the three Kowalczyk sisters: Toni, Betty and Marianne. Other members of the band were Lou Willé (Toni's then-husband), Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans, and John Theunissen. The band had four international hits in a row in the mid-seventies: Mississippi (1975), Georgia (1976), Smile (1976) and My broken souvenirs (1977) and then a series of hit singles in the Netherlands and Belgium. Mississippi was number 1 the Netherlands and in another 15 countries but was not hit in the US, where that river originates. 'Mississippi' achieved 22 gold records. It is estimated that "Mississippi" sold over five million copies worldwide. Most of of Pussycat's songs were written by Werner Theunissen.
This Toppop recording was made during the special 10th Edition of Toppop in 1980!

TopPop was the first regular dedicated pop music TV show in the Dutch language area. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly, from 1970 to 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for its first fifteen years.
World famous music artists performed on TopPop: ABBA, 10CC, Bee Gees, The Jacksons, David Bowie, Earth & Fire, Boney M, Smokie, KC & The Sunshine Band, Chick, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, and many many more.
My goodness, I haven't heard that in decades. I remember it was all over the radio and playing on every jukebox in 1976.

One of my great - perhaps my greatest - musical guilty pleasures. I normally cannot stand this kind of Euro faux-country. But not this time folks. This is wonderful. The voices, the harmonies, the counterpoint string section, the spot-on slide gee-tar. Does not attempt to be anything other than it is - a sing-along melodic country track. Insanely catchy and totally irresistible. More power to them. I loved it then and I love it still.

When this came out it was the most played record on juke boxes in the UK, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing it and people singing along to it of all ages! Great song and very catchy and ageless..
This brings me back to the 70's! Man what a time to have been young! I really miss it! Great Music, and life was so easy back then!

Surprised that this was never a hit in the US. It was a massive hit here in the UK, it was heard everywhere.

It wasn't a hit because it's obvious they aren't southern or American. There is no twang to it in the pronunciation. It does make a difference. It's a lovely song but it doesn't sound authentic.

Some songs will last forever and this is one of them. Number one all over Europe in 1975 and number one in the U.K. in October 1976. Toni’s vocal is outstanding and made this band special.

Oh my, perfect vocal performance, the harmonies are exquisite, the lead vocal never quivers or falters for one note, these girls can sing, this is a masterclass and should be used as an example to all up and coming singers.

It has that top quality backing you always seem to get with country, and the most musical voice you could ever wish to hear. How it wasn't a hit in the US, heaven only knows.
European hits rarely became hits in the US. Remember Boney M? They were #1 all over in Europe, but hardly even known in the US.

They never were promoted in US and Canada. The entertainers have to be on the road to promote their music. Maybe they were not prepared to be on the road to do what rat required. Happy to find them now in my 79’s
