I’m in the minority with this .. but signing Will Riley would be a mistake. At some point (and we are there) the faucet needs to turn right. We have enough talent; we will keep more talent (Kaspar; Morez, others) for next year when we get Jeremy Fears added; commitment to current players still has a place in college basketball, so make that balanced statement to your program and focus on team camradery. We saw how much that meant this past year.

You know what bothers me the most is that these guys do not know the legend any Illini team and its individual players would become if they won an NCAA championship at Illinois. The last time I lived in Illinois was when the team of the late 1980s made it to the championship game; I also lived in Illinois when the great Lou Henson team lost to Michigan when a future NBA player did not block out a Michigan sub. (That one hurt the most of all, because Illinois had clearly been the superior team, had not player playing with injury, and just was not at its best in the championship game. It was the best team in America, but it did not win on the biggest stage. Barlow knows, and still has to feel the pain. ANY TEAM MAKING IT TO THE LIFTING O”F THE FINAL TROPHY WILL LIVE FOREVER! We are he best team in the NCAA never to win the NCAA. (yea, I know we won the NIt when it was the more important, but that is history even more ancient than I am! :)
Food for thought. It wouldn't surprise me if Ty Rodgers pulls a page out of Luke Goode's playbook and goes home for his final season at Michigan State. I love Ty and how hard he plays but would you really be upset about replacing 6 points and 7 rebounds a game?
He’s one of the few players that you know is going to give you rim pressure. Otherwise it’s very unknown if he weren’t here.

Riley is probably a 1 and done type. The type of player illinois really has never had.

He is constantly lifted up as a Dee thinker, but he overthinks. He just needs to learn to play the game on instinct, while using his brain to anticipate. But, the reason I was so frustrated with him is that he was always thinking too much. He just need to shoot the ball, but he would try to set someone else up. He let his emotion get way too into his head, and all that impacted his game. Do I want him to succeed? YES! Do I think he is good for a team? I do not know. I think other coaches think the same way. Good job, though! He is a good guy, just a little perplexing.

I'm hoping our Illini, but something that gym picture at UK has me thinking Kentucky gets him.
That’s where I stand as well Jeffrey. But the UK folks I talk to say they really don’t think they can fit him in 2024, and that’s where it might benefit us.
You get this kid no matter what. Hes NBA 1st round talent. You take him and that’s it.
Agreed, we are not a program that can turn down this sort of talent.
I’m not sure anyone would HAVE to leave, but it may mean one of the players feel that way. Riley is a 3 or 4 so I don’t feel that anyone would leave. Riley is likely a one and done at Illinois, even if he doesn’t go pro after one season. I say it’s best to have talent and expect BU to make it work with minutes. That’s why BU makes the big $$$.
I just don't think we have the minutes to make everyone happy. I don't see a junior year Ty or Trey be satisfied playing 15 minutes or less. Thanks for watching Steve!
@@LockedOnIllini If the players goals are to win and not only focus on themselves (tall task I know), then winning should be more important than individual accomplishments. Isn’t that the definition of everyday guys?
Having said that, this is also why the Illini have had high turnover since BU became HC. He has his way and most players are not aligned for more than a year.

I think ty Rogers is a negative for the Illinois
If you’re looking at just scoring maybe, but I think he’s a plus player in almost every other facet of the game. He’s the type of guy I think every winning team needs at least one of.
