Synopsis:
Equality. Solidarity. Intersectionality. #charge
مساوة. تضامن. تقاطعية. #عليهم
The video self-consciously toys with the intersection of gender with race by celebrating and championing a coalition of Arab and Muslim women, styled to over-articulate their ethnic background, in a manner more typically employed by Western media to victimise them.
This seeks to disturb the dominant global narrative of hyper-secularised (white) feminism, which increasingly positions itself as incompatible with Islam and the Arab world, celebrating the various modalities of middle-eastern feminism.
The video purposefully attempts to revert the position of the (male) musicians as the heroes of the narrative, not only by subjecting them to the (female) gaze of the director, but also by representing them as individuals who (literally) take the backseat as the coalition moves forward.
So while the lyrics of the verses discuss betrayal, struggle, and conflict, the video revolves around the lyrical pivot in the chorus:
‘aleihum (charge!)
treating oppression, not as a source of victimhood, but as the fertile ground from which resistance can be weaponised.

I discovered this band almost 1 week ago and they are absolutely amazing. I love every single song even if I don't understand a word. I decided to do the most spontaneous thing i've ever did in my life: I took a ticket to their concert in Bruxelles in March 2019 (I live in Romania) and I am so happy that i will have this great opportunity to feel that music live and to see them. I can't wait that moment. I found them randomly on youtube .This is the power of music. Thank you Mashrou' Leila. Love from Romania.

I discovered them a couple years ago through a facebook friend and have listened to them All The Time since then. I dont' even usually listen to links people post, but I gave it a shot (to be honest it's because I love the way the Arabic language looks, and I was intrigued by the album.)
I've wanted to see them ever since that first day, after watching the Paleo Festival. So glad you're able to go!!! I hope you have an amazing time!! Go and enjoy it for those of us who can't :) Take care

Whoever engineers the sound for these guys is an artist. I am thrilled at the clarity of the highs, lows, vocals, all the instruments in proper balance. So crispy and rich. This has been consistent through all the recordings.

The artistic level of that clip is blind-blowing! I can’t stop watching it in circle! Of course because of the music, as always, but it’ also blends contemporary dance (great dancer!), a fascinating choice of environment, and a beautiful crowd of extra actors. All this in an impeccable editing with synchronicities. Not forgetting the gorgeous face expressions of Mashrou Leila and the dancer at the end. Mashrou Leila uses its art as a catalyser of so much more that just music. True, I do not understand any of the lyrics, but it does not matter : all the rest speaks to me so much!
