Coromandel was the veneer of choice for some of the best boxes and considered one of the most exotic, elegant and costly woods to work with under Queen Victoria's rule.
Originally from India and South East Asia, coromandel wood was a remarkably dense, close-grained material. From the Ebony family, visually a more vivid and figured (patterned) variation; the real species of Coromandel nearly disappeared by the start of the 20th century. Macassar Ebony is the closest relative to Coromlda nowadays.
