- Zim's PAK gets disconnected, which gives him only ten minutes of time before he dies without his life support system causing him to slowly lose consciousness and memories within these ten minutes. Seeing this as an opportunity to finally defeat Zim, Dib steals his PAK and intends on keeping it out of his reach. However, this backfires in two ways. The PAK digs itself into Dib's belly and takes control of him. While the PAK is embedded in his stomach, Dib becomes more like Zim, sharing what used to be his ambition of destroying Earth. Dib remains sane enough to fight with himself. With the inadvertent help of Gaz, Zim manages to retrieve his PAK with a second to spare. Had Zim not regained the PAK, he would've died completely. Also, if Dib had the PAK in his body during that crucial second, he would've been completely destroyed.
Apparently, the episode was to be set in real-time as a "life clock" would have been present throughout the episode. Jhonen Vasquez planned for Zim to actually die in this episode due to the series' upcoming cancellation, making it a convenient series finale, but Nickelodeon did not allow it in case they decided to bring the show back. So Jhonen changed the scene from Zim dying into the scene that Zim reclaims his PAK at the final second.

Fun fact: In earlier versions of this episode, Zim was planned to die, but nickelodeon thought they might pick up the show again in later years so the team decided against it, and instead had the pak returned in the last second.

Dib along with Zim are the iconic characters of Invader Zim. If they replaced any of them, the show would never be the same anymore.

The incredible voice cast helps make up for the lack of animation, i have a hard time just reading through the transcripts.

I love how people are calling Dib evil for stealing Zim's PAK. Are we just going to forget Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy, A Room with a Moose, Bolognius Maximus, Walk for your Lives, NanoZim, Megadoomer, or any of the other countless times that Zim has deliberately and intentionally tried to kill/destroy Dib (and everyone else for that matter)? To be honest, I think Zim's evilness goes WAY beyond Dib's, especially since the things Dib does that are morally questionable are usually because he doesn't want the entire Earth to be destroyed.

This is like a year late but I feel like earth has some cool stories it COULD tell. It's clearly some sort of polluted dystopia but they're super casual about it. I wonder how it ended up that way.
+Kurt Wagner my theory on that is somehow professor membrane caused it and altered the earth's environment and the people because they got too smart and found out some horrible truth about membrane.

I would assume that it's because that voice is likely not his natural voice and it takes a lot of effort to get your voice into that. He basically just coughed up his Zim voice for a little.

I'm not sure I like the idea that the Pak is Zim's brain. Zim kind of explains it as his life support at first. I thought it was like a cybernetic enhancement -- meaning that the strictly biological Irken has limits of mind and survival, but the Pak allows Irkens that extra boost. If the Irken body is just a shell, and the technology IS Zim, like Dib says, then Irkens are technological parasites that latch onto one specific race of weak and dumb green aliens? Mmm... not a fan of that idea. Also it was kind of dumb to make Dib turn into Zim slowly -- if it didn't work properly with human biology as Zim says... anyways...
I thought of it more as that the irkens have just become so technology-dependent that they need paks. It would have started as a cybernetic enhancement, but over time their bodies stopped doing things the paks did for them, so now they need them to live.

irkens will die of old age.

BAppleJuice I like the idea. It just shows how alien the Irkens really are. They're more technology than organism. Not sure why the Pak is removable though, that seems like more of a flaw than an advantage.

I thought that the average maximum lifespan of pure irken was about as long as a human's average lifespan, and the PAK made them live longer by replacing all the deteriorating organs and brains, considering that Zim is older than any other human on earth, it's quite important

Feeble or Dibble were variants for Dib's name
Zim & Dib died. As Zim implies Dib would've blown up if he had worn it too long. The episode was supposed to end with the vision suddenly getting very hazy in the last seconds, seeing things through Zim's POV as he tries to get his pack ultimately failing & the episode just ending there. Nickelodeon didn't like it, not because of how dark it was but because they wanted an open ending in case they did future episodes. Which is quite ironic considering they cancelled it and never brought it back.
This is sort of messed up the more I think about it.
Dib is especially cruel in this one. Zim is just minding his own business and then he just assaults him, steals his PAK, keeps it away from him even after he knows he'll die without it AND gets him beat up. Tbh I still love it, it's just weird for Zim to be the victim (even if he totally deserves it).
Also I can't believe Jhonen wanted to end it like that. I mean, I get having Zim die for the finale (well, I don't bc _kids show)_ but this is just so....brutal...and also a little anticlimactic, isn't it? Like, not only would Zim die but it's so slow and painful and he loses his identity- the only thing that really matters to him- all without ever accomplishing anything, gaining the approval of the tallest or even learning the error of his ways. He just goes brain dead as a failed invader on a miserable little planet lightyears away from home.
And Dib would die too, right in front of his dad and sister who would be SO confused. They still never find out Zim is an alien, probably just think he's a dead kid and bury him normally, meaning Dib gets no retribution either. Both dead, anticlimactically. Hmm, maybe this is an intentional 'everyone loses' scenario?
Gir isn't even in this one. His master would gone and he wouldn't even know what happened to him. I know Gir is a little crazy, but he actually does love Zim and I'd imagine he'd be a little sad if he were to just disappear one day.
The more I think about it, the more depressing and terrible that sounds for a series finale of a beloved kid's show. Lowkey glad the network said no. Maybe Jhonen hates this series for some reason?? I mean, the comics are great, Florpus was good...can't imagine why he'd want to end it on such a sour note.

I like to think the rubber piggies episode at least proves that Professor Membrane cares about his son to the point of preventing his death by literally any means necessary... even if, at that point, it might have been kinder to let him go. Maybe the way the professor deals with his fears is by unequivocally rejecting or denying them; if I were a man like Membrane, the idea of paranormal phenomena or extraterrestrials would be terrifying since they're impossible to control or quantify.
Or perhaps the old fantheory that Membrane is himself an Irken is true, and we know there's no parenting on planet Irk. He has absolutely no idea how to go about raising offspring by hand.

I think he saved dib in the piggies ep because it involved science, the same reason he saved dib in this ep despite not really caring about anything he was saying just cause he was intrigued by the pak. He likes science more than his kids. I mean, it's a silly show, that's just how it be. It's like you said, it would have been kinder to let him die, but he just couldn't help but keep him alive, just to see if he could.
I prefer the theory that dib is his (failed) clone. That's why he doesn't really care all that much. Him being an Irken wouldn't make sense. He's not green, doesn't appear to need a pak to live, isn't trying to take over humanity, is in fact trying to benefit it. Maybe he is an alien with no concept of parenting, but not an Irken. imho
Now if we're talking about Into the Florpus, they retconned them to be a much more realistic family dynamic. I mean even Gaz cares about Dib. Crazy stuff.

It wasn't just Zim that was supposed to die at the end of this, Dib too from being merged with the incompatible alien tech ("Your human body is incompatible with the pak, it would have destroyed you!") however Nick scrapped it for 2 reasons, one because it was obvious too dark for a kids show, 2 in case they ever wanted the series to return (Which lead to us getting Enter The Florpus instead)

I always imagined this episode would take place away from the eyes of characters like the school kids and Membrane so as to not make Zim incredibly obvious to everyone around him. Membrane's attitude after witnessing and hearing all of that stuff about the Pak and Zim outright admitting what it's about is so confusingly nonchalant.

Why people call dib evil? First of all, he is miserable kid, with unintentional dad and ruthles sister. He saw true unnormal things and society doesn't believe him and makes fun of him, he still protecting the earth after all this, but everyone thinks he is crazy and still makes fun of him after he saved their lives. And Zim hurts Dib and made him suffer much more than Dib did to him.
All it needs is a really good animator and we can have invader zim up and running again cause there's quite a few season 2 episodes that only have the audio :D
Endermender110 easier said than done. the average cartoon uses in between 80-120 frames of animation. Zim used 250-350 frames, which is part of what made the show so difficult and expensive to animate

Either make it into a sequel film or do a mini-series like yearly maybe 8 episodes, less "burnout" or exhaustion like the creator said (which made it be a film not a new series right now) and use old material that we'd like to see on screen as well as plenty of new.

I know I'm really late, but I really hope Florpus and the comics have given us that glimmer of hope we need to get these episodes animated! Wow the work that was put into these! The last animation was cute with the cutouts and all, but I can't ignore how accurate the art of the first two are with the original series! THIS is what needs to be continued! I'm especially impressed with the first artist! SGismyname? It's perfection! I would fully support you; even help out if I could, should you collaborate with an animator. Please start a Kickstarter or something! Send it in to Nick as a proposal even. Let's do this people! We need someone for sound effects, we need someone for coloring and inking, we need someone to oversee the project, and we need a coffee-drone. Can't do anything without a coffee-drone. BOBBY! Get BOBBY here! Oh yeah, the Almighty Tallest sent him into the sun. Okay, who wants to be coffee-drone? I speak for a lot of people when I say we don't want a shoddy reboot like a lot of shows. We want it to feel like there wasn't a near 20 year gap in between! I know technology used for animation has changed over the years, but do your best to make it as true to the original concept as you can! Show them what we really want! Man, these episodes REALLY make me want to see new episodes. They're really good but they make me really long for the sound and music design. The scripting and voice talent is great but the sound/music design was fantastic and really made the show as great as it was.

The actual story is that this was made with the cancellation in mind so Zim was going to be killed as a conclusion. But Nick didn’t want that incase they want to make a revival. The ending got changed so Zim would live but it didn’t get finished.

Something I don't understand, zim is like 16 years old in the time of his species but on earth he is over 100 years old approximately, that means that time is different for irkens, so why is the timer in human minutes? Shouldn't it be more than quadruple the time on earth? Maybe it's the time he has left before he passes out and he still has time left (about an hour) before his end but I don't know...
