  • Apparently a wise man once said 'you cannot rush perfection.' We are still unsure of what constitutes 'wise' these days.
it is fair to say that Carl has received a lot of critism for his soldering antics over the years and he is hoping that brand new soldering iron might mask his skill. In addition to installing new electrics the focus is tidy electrics, Taking the time to shorten wires can transform the aesthetics of the car but also help with performance.
Carl attempts to make his car a bit more presentable ready for when the indorr racing commences again.
This is strangely satisfying and car will definitely be taking his time with his electrics in the future.

You need to use a wider tip to get solder to flow better to get better joints

Much better as far as I can see! Soldering was great! Any chance you name some parts for me so I can give it a go? What do you call the little black connectors off the ESC and the little metal ends that were crimped on? Also is that a special type of crimper? All the best. Many thanks 👍

Sorry, I was cringing. Your soldering was OK but, get a thicker tip so it transfers heat better and you won't have to hold the iron on so long for solder to melt. Also a little bit of flux helps the solder flow to make a better joint. Your exposed wires were way too long for the connectors. You only need it exposed enough so the innermost crimp will clamp onto the wire. Insert the wire into the connector just far enough so the outer crimp will clamp the insulation. Zip tie the fan wire to the centre brace.

All you need is a Hakko FX888D soldering iron and watch some Joshua Bardwell video and it applies to everything. Have you tried to wrap the leads to the reciver around a screwdriver and then heat so it stays coiled?

Have you considered TQ wires. Very flexible compared to the box wires with the hobbywing esc

That soldering iron is the opposite of what you need. You need a thick chisel tip. That will completely liquify the solder and make a much cleaner joint.
You may be able to just buy a new tip now you have purchased the iron.

Just a tip. If you use a large piece of heat shrink you can put all 3 motor wires. Fan wire and sensor cable all in one wrapped bundle .
Can you link to that crimping tool please? I could use that . I have trouble doing those plugs .

Great video. Looks good. Check out the aluminum bullet battery buttons from 1 UP Racing. They give you a billet aluminum knob to get the batterey bullet out and also adds some nice bling.

Good effort that mate! Each one will get better and better, before I do a re wire I’ll often check the pro’s layout to get some ideas and go from there, black marker pen the servo wires etc give it a nice stealth look

Separate flux for the joints would help your soldering to flow better making more fluid looking joints

Good job. If it works, you’ve done it right. Soldering is one of those jobs that you’ll get better after a few hundred joints.

You could hide your sensor cable and your motor fan wire by routing them underneath the battery… if your chassis doesn’t have machined out grooves to accommodate them you can create wire space by sitting the battery on foam pads. I know that slightly raises your COG, but it’s negligible.

About the wireing of pro cars iv seen plenty of pictures of ratsnests in pro cars.
Usualy hobbyists take the time and thought to route the wires in the cleanest posible way.

Looking better. I am fairly new to 1/12 scale also, quickly became my favorite class. Agreed, wire management is lot of work to keep these little cars nice. I've got new electronics on the way for mine. I went with an Orca Talon 1s esc, no external power switch or capacitor to worry about and 100a. When you shorten the esc and servo wires you dont need to strip that much wire. Just a tiny bit of wire to go into the first section and then you want the rear tangs wo crimp around the insulation.

To be honest it's like anything else. Get the right gear, practice and in no time you'll find it so easy you'll be re doing all your old joints. Believe me. I started when I took up rc racing now I can remove and reflow chips on circuit boards. It's just basically liquid metal you're flowing where you want it. Good luck. 👍

The irony of my wiring, is when I have tidy electrics, I do badly, when I have messy electrics, I do a lot better. Now, I get them as neat as I can, but don't worry too much about it anymore.
