  • Tonight we're taking a first look at the Curtis C46 Commando in Microsoft Flight Simulator - the latest "local legend" released by Asobo. It's easy to fly, wonderful to look at, and should be great fun to fly some historic routes in!

    This aircraft was made more famous by a tv series Ice Pilots that followed Buffalo Airways, a family-run airliner/freight company based in Yellowknife Airport Canada , this aircraft was first done by aeroplane heaven /just flight for FSX and was £27.99 , the C46 is bigger than the four-engined B17.
    The C46 Commando is a younger than the DC3/C47 , as its first flight was in 1940, and the DC3 was around since 1935

    Sweet! When I was in the US Air Force, I was stationed at a small airport way out in the middle of nowhere Alaska, on the Yukon River. The little airport was called Galena, and it was home to about 250 men and women of the USAF that wiled away their year in paradise (it was a remote assignment) supporting two F-15C Eagles that were on alert duty. The airport was also home to an eclectic assortment of civilian aircraft, from Piper Cubs, Cessna 180s on floats, to a couple of Cessna 414's. In the summer, when it became forest fire season, Galena also became a temporary home to a large collection of water bombers and smoke jumper haulers. One of those haulers was a venerable C-46 Commando. When I first saw it sitting at the end of the flightline, I mistakenly thought it was another DC-3/C-47 (they were nearly a dime a dozen up there). That was until I saw the profile, and recognized the streamlined pointy front end. Such a cool airplane. Thanks for covering this, by the way Jonathan, it brought back some good memories.

      @@NoordAVA001 Fairbanks is an A-10 base, I think. Two Elmendorf F-15C's were rotated every two weeks from Galena, and King Salmon. They also flew intercepts out of Elmendorf, as well as the KC-135 tankers that had to go up every time the Eagles launched to intercept a Bear, or Badger, or Backfire, or some other B-word Russian bomber.

      @@NoordAVA001 I literally live 6 miles from an Air Force base (Scott AFB) now, and have yet to see an F-35. I do see F-22 Raptors come through here on cross country trips, but no F-35 so far (for me). Alaska is covered with all kinds of old Cold War era sites. I rode on an Air Force C-12 (Beechcraft Super King Air 200) from Elmendorf to Galena, and we landed at two long range radar sites in the middle of nowhere. One had a landing strip where we landed going uphill, and took off going downhill. Talk about exciting!

      @@NoordAVA001 I started out working on F-4E Phantoms, I was a Weapon Control System technician, working on the radar system. I did that for six years, then cross-trained into ground radar. I maintained air traffic control radar for pretty much the rest of my career. Galena was my only Alaska assignment, and it was only for a year, from May of 1992 to May of 1993.

    Hi Jonathan. For starting you really need to leave the mesh going longer. At least 15 propblades . That way you don't get the stop/start on the prop as the mesh takes over before priming.

      I think that your suppose to count a number of prop blades to go by and engage whatever it has for primer. Spin the fly wheel, mesh the engine to it, turn the mags on and engage primer. I dont think the fule pump is needed except for takeoff. I do think radial engines were pushed through several revolutions by hand to get oil circulated throughout them into every cylinder.

    • @PeterNGloor
      @PeterNGloor 16 дней назад

      @@johnc.4871 what if this type of engines has no flywheel starter? When I was watching and listening at Hay River it sounded normally like other R-2800 planes. I have no idea what fascinates Asobo so much about that inertial starter.

    • @johnc.4871
      @johnc.4871 16 дней назад

      @@PeterNGloor I think that radial engine was the standard and used in many planes. Radials are high torques engines and require something with more torque to push the pistons through the cycles. I found that the extra steps needed to start a radial with inertia is a little more fun than pressing a button and the computer does it all for you. Sometimes I like to press a button and not mess with mixture and spark.

    To startup round engines NEVER turn on the mags afer the bird was parkt for a periot not used.
    First turn engine over at least 4 revs to clear oil from lower cylinders.Otherwise the engine can be instantly ruend by backfire . Fly seefly.

      There's a larger freight door that surrounds the smaller cargo door. Look for ice pilots on RUclips or Buffalo airways C46 and you'll find footage of one being loaded with large pallets. It's quite an art form! Basically they are poked in at an angle then manhandled square.

    Jon, I have found a very graphic sound exemple of this engine type on startup. You hear no flywheel, but the starter motor turns the engine, after 12 blade the magnetos are switched on, and the first few turns are on just the primed fuel, then you feel the engine would die, and this is when the mixture is opened. See: worldwarwings.com/dc6-r2800-startup/ video at the bottom of the page.
