- Harbor freight / canadian tire 5-ton yardworks horizontal (electric log splitter).Unleash Your Firewood Fury: The Electric Wood Splitter You Need with this Powerful Performance
The 5-Ton Yardworks Log Splitter
Let me give you the lowdown on this beast of a machine. The Yardworks 65558 5-Ton Electric Log Splitter is equipped with a solid 1.75 horsepower motor, running purely on electricity. It features two parts: one with a wedge and the other flat. Personally, the wedge is my go-to for tackling cottonwood and larger logs.
Performance and Durability
I've had this splitter for about three years, and it's been a reliable workhorse. If you're considering picking one up from Canadian Tire or elsewhere, let me share my experience. Over these three years, I've only hit one snag, and that was with some particularly stubborn green birch.
Efficiency and Ease of Use
This splitter has seen approximately 24 cords of wood, with at least 12 cords split continuously without any issues. It’s a solid performer. You'll notice I've added a bungee cord for a solo operation because, technically, it’s a two-person job. The stroke is a bit slow, but aside from that, this machine is rock solid.
Quick Demonstration
Alright, let’s get into action. I’ll show you how this baby works. We’ll start with some nice, dry wood. There we go, smooth as butter. Now for a bigger piece… watch your toes!
Final Thoughts
So, there you have it. The Yardworks 5-Ton Electric Log Splitter doesn’t come with a stand, but I whipped up a simple one myself. No biggie. For the price, this little machine is a powerhouse. If you’re on the fence about buying it, I say go for it. It’s been a reliable companion in my wood-splitting endeavors.
Verdict
Great performance, minimal issues, and excellent value for money. I highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a dependable log splitter. Thanks for tuning in!

Great demo!!
Thank you mike,
I have the exact same one. 4 years now. Just changed the oil in mine today. Works perfect. Will never buy a gas one.
Yeah i like it alot. So far so good.
Any idea what hex Allen key is required for the oil nut?
Bob its 8mm or 5/16 for the oil.
@@DIYVariety thank you.
where can you get them fixed in BC
I have no idea, i would try a small engine repair shop
It powered right through that log like it was nothing. Sure beats chopping it by hand
It appears that this was last used and the fluid wasn't checked. I fired it up and it won't move. I checked the fluid and it was empty... It seems like even after I've filled it to the marks, I still can't get it to move... any suggestions?
Not sure, all i know is once i had to take the screw vent out and keep running it till the air was out then put screw back in tight then losen it two turns. Not the fill allan screw but the small on by the ram with the plastic wing nut. Other then that maybe the lever brcause its a two hand operation maybe the lever is loose or a piece of wood blocking the lever from going fully down.
@@DIYVariety I was told it was possibly the capacitor. I don't have a way of checking it at the moment but that's the next thing Im looking at.
@@MrGregTrumpower Could be never know. Let us know when you find out im sure it would be good info
The ram bent on mine while splitting green birch near the end of a 14 cord truckload. but it has split A LOT of wood. I'd get one again but I'm going to invest into a bigger one for the amount of wood I split.
You suppose to stop abd have a beer so the old girl can rest up lol how long did you have it total or did it break on its firts 14 chord. Thanks a lot for watching and for your comment i really appreciate it. Stay safe
I've had it for 3 years. That was just the most work I put it through all at once. A good 4 days of splitting all day long
Seemed like you were splitting softwood (pine, spruce etc). How well does it perform with maple or oak?
I had alot of birch big stuff and it did it no problem. We don't get much oak or maple here but birch can be a trial at times but this one did 18 inch diameter no problem. Sometimes it will stop and you need to keep trying but over all its great. Birch is a family of beech oak. Thanks for watching and hope to see you again.
Thank you for reviewing the unit.
Does it require 20 Amp circuit or it works with 15Amp just fine?
Do you use any extention cords with it and how long?
I have 20 amp circut but i think 15 would be fine. I use a extention about 15 feet or so.
How's she goin'? These electric splitters are the cat's ass in my opinion. There isn't much they won't split, but they aren't very fast. I use mine for resplitting big pieces and for making splits!! I wouldn't be without it!!! Take care!!
did you have difficulty switching out the hammer for the second wedge? i can't get 2 of the bolts to release
No i cant saw i had too much trouble, that said, i had to use pry bar to slightly lift up on the wedge to take tension off the bt but other then that i didnt have any problem. But remember it was a tight fit.
What was the diameter of the largest log you split ?
The largest was 20 inches, but, i had to turn it over to match the ram to other side and keep doing that but it did it. But i regularly put 12 to 15 inch through it no problem. Anything over say, 15 inches is a hit and miss and of course if dry or wet . Cheers
@@DIYVariety thanks very much, going to buy one tomorrow……
That log splitter is nice man. I def like the electric option.
Yeah electric is great if your indoors for most of the use. I pack it in my woodhouse and as i get big stuff i can throw it on as i get it. Thanks for your kind comment.
what's the maximum lenght of log allowed with both Wedges on???
Thanks for the video
You can fit a 17 1/2 inch in there but unless soft wood the ram dont have enough travel to get full power at least thats my experience. I stop at 16 inch and dont have much trouble, with one wedge add about 2 inches or so but two wedges make light work i cut my wood at 15.5 inches works best with my stove.
@@DIYVariety oh Cr**,
I have 18" logs for my stove..
And I want to use both wedges for easy work.... I'll have to either buy the Yardwork 27 ton gas log splitter or cut out 2" of all my existing logs....
Less expensive to cut out 2" I guess, but "less" fun then buy a Gas Machine
@@Benoit83B on the box it says 20.5 inch log length and 10 inch diameter. So here goes lol found actual box it came in, with single wedge it says max is 20.5 inch double wedge is 17 11/32 INCHES. But 20.5 is ok for soft wood maybe. But thats the skinny lol thanks for commenting
Hi, thank you for the review. I've got one of these too. The auto return stopped working yesterday. Do you have any suggestion how to fix it?
Thanks for watching hey, it happen to mine right out of box . All i had to do was loosen nut where your return lever is and just around the corner there is a spring that pushes back the lever to return the ram. The nut may be too loose or the spring need to be stiffen or replaced. Very easy to do now that said i am assuming that you are talking about the return lever? If you push up on the lever does it go back? Or are you talking about the hydraulic valve. If the lever you push along with button for motor stays down then what i said is most likely the problem.
@@DIYVariety Thank you for your prompt response. It is the hydraulic valve which is stuck. I separated the arms and still not returning.
Sorry couldnt help im sure you already made sure that nothing jamed between the return carriage (the two rods connected to the wedge) my son had that problem) some wood got wedged between the rod and body . Well you separated the arms so not that. Bent ram? Did the ram go back when you seperated the arms(i know some call the two rods that cary the wedge arms) will ram go back then? Wish i could help more, if you fix it come back tell us about it. Helping people is what its about. Cheers
@@DIYVariety thank you so much. I will try to fix it and let you know about it. Cheers
Hey bud this is a great video for this splitter, i like the honest approach. Thanks again and keep at it.
Thank you for the kind words and for the encouragement 🙏
Is that just pine you're splitting? Show is some twisted oak being split, then we'll know if it's a descent splitter or not.
It splits birch no problem thats hardwood
Get the 6 ton with the foot pedal way easier to use
I should have got that in first place, it sure would been better, cheers
Two thoughts, what did it cost you???? And speak up, I had the volume on my computer as high as it would go and still could barely hear you. Finally, buy a tripod to put your camera on, as all that swinging around nearly made me dizzy! HA HA
Lmao it cost 299, and i had the flu i think, not sure in that video, lol and did i make you feel like you were splitting wood in a boat. Thanks and cheers
