  • During the English department hweshik I was pleasantly surprised, touched, and slightly embarrassed when my coteachers started bragging about me to the new teacher. xD What universities you went to doesn’t seem as big of a deal in America, especially for software engineering companies but they’re a really big deal in Korea… and I hadn’t thought about the fact that I managed to learn all the students’ names during COVID when everyone had to wear masks in a long time. 😅 And they were joking that I was better than them at Korean now and I was like whaaat and they were like none of us have certificates in Korean! 🤣 I am just really grateful because I’ve always been very lucky with having good colleagues and managers, from all my part-time jobs to now. 🥺
Reading the 4-Hour Work Week coupled with the existential crisis of turning 30 has inspired me to try some new stuff and also changed my mind about my next steps... heh...
Had a hilarious moment during class yesterday. A student (one of the class clowns) raised his hand and I got super excited because I thought he was volunteering to answer my question. So I called his name, and then he pressed a button on his iPad, and Papago/Google Translate said: “Can I go to the bathroom?” LOL I laughed so hard and all his friends laughed too. It was hilarious, if tragic since I’ve been teaching them for almost 2 years now and he still doesn’t ask to go to the bathroom in English… xD Side note, the class went super well even though it was a “boring” lesson (we were reviewing 10 phrases to practice for their speaking test) and I was so happy! I wish all my classes could be that fun, with lots of students volunteering answers. :3 In the same class, my students also showed me a self-defense move. XD I wanted them to use the phrase "I recommend that you..." and the prompt was "I'm going to visit Seoul." and one student said something about self-defense (because of the recent stabbing rampages in Seoul). And they showed me a move for blocking a knife, using a straw as the pretend knife and I was very impressed. xD
Today during tennis, we played volleyball. One of my poor students ended up covering both his spot and my spot and all the kids really dive for the balls and aren't scared of getting hurt at all and I'm just like wow they are amazing. 😮👏🏻
