First of all, thank you for reacting to this performance. I also was very moved when I first heard this song. I hope that you could also listen to, what in my opinion is, one of the best performances in The Singer. Its "The Night in Ulaanbaatar" by Tan WeiWei. Here I leave the link to the perfomance with a 2 minutes background story and subtitles

      True feeling touches people.
He's expressing his feeling of being a 58 years old man, whose daughter (6 years old) died because of cancer back in 2010.
He originally wrote this song for his hometown which feels like heaven, later he dedicated this song to his young daughter who's now in heaven.

Joanna Guerriero yes what is most sad is that is he was actually (probably) expressing his love for his daughter who died in 2012. He says “my home” and “I love you, my girl”. He actually stopped singing for a long time when his daughter died. So it’s even more sad if you know for who he is singing this for (I think some people in the audience knew this as well)

Never ever encounter such superb powerful vocal control over a true sad story of his demised beloved girl.
      Superb Tandian control
Howling and crying his heart out with full of anguish with similar "God why not take me"
Just wondering how emotional he was when he penned this song for his beloved daughter
Remember Mongolians are taught never to cry

Tengri was born in 1960 in China's Inner Mongolia. In 1985, after graduating from the Tianjin Conservatory, Tengri became a professional singer and composer. He is well known in China. He wrote this song in 1997 to express how much he misses and loves his hometown and his daughter. His daughter died at the age of six due to illness. In the beginning, there was traditional Mongolian throat singing. This performance used the traditional Mongolian instrument Morin Khuur

Tenger or Tengri, is a Chinese singer, songwriter and composer of Mongol ethnicity. He is singing about missing Mongolia. This is the meaning of the song he is singing:
    I see a blue sky,
    Over a green lake,
    Vast is the grassland,
    This is my homeland.
    Horses running wild there,
    Sheep as white as snow,
    My girl, wait for me,
    Where my heart’s at home.
    I love you, my homeland,
    My homeland, my heaven.
    I miss you, my homeland,
    My homeland, my heaven.
    I see a blue sky,
    Over a green lake,
    Vast is the grassland,
    This is my homeland.

Oh wow, he wrote this! No wonder it's such a unique blend of traditional singing techniques! If you listen to the way he patterns his messa di voce sounds like a large wave, giving the impression of an ocean, smaller waves (vibrato) on larger waves (messa di voce). It's so freaking beautiful and masterful how he sang this! I love his unique blend of traditional musicality. It's super cool how he uses his voice like a string instrument, and also make it sound like a flute! That is so Freaking cool!

The Singer had tried for a few years to get him to come on the show. This is my favorite performance of his, but he has other good ones also. He is a revered master and is also highly involved with the replanting of trees in Mongolia. Hua Chenyu does this song on another show (don't remember the name). He is a very humble man,He sang about his daughter's feelings. I have a friend who is very close to him. Every time they get drunk, he sings songs to show how much he misses his daughter. Another historical story is that he didn't have a last name, because long ago his family were slaves, so they couldn't have a last name.

He was literally singing the song with his life! His whole body was devoted to the song. What a great artist. I remember the first time I heard this song when I was five years old. At that time, I could not understand the feelings contained in this song, but now as I grow up, I will want to cry when I hear this song. Hua chenyu has also covered this song. Although Tengri's version is always my favorite, Hua Hua cleverly adapted the song instead of imitating his singing method. I also love Hua's version. What's interesting is that I know Tengri's lovely and kind character from this show, especially when he interacts with the cute Hua Hua. I am very happy to see this young artist and this older generation of artist in the mix of different ideas, as well as on the music exchange. The magic of music.

As far as seeing the contestants' reactions, that's definitely something I think the singer show is strong at, when they show the singers or even the audience they don't do it at a disadvantage to the performance like so many shows do. They manage to find a good balance most of the time I think.
Also when Dimash came back in 2018's Singer run as a guest performance there are backstage videos of Jessie J hearing him. She's getting ready to go on stage and there's a screen in her dressing room.

Actually the country named Mongolia now was departed from China as a condition for the USSR to send army to fight the Japanese towards the end of WW2. Many people cried, mostly because this song is meant for his dead daughter that died in 2012, he stopped singing after his daughter died, but this is the first time singing this song again and he is probably expressing is love for his daughter in heaven. It is originally about his homeland but “我的家” is actually translated as my home (so not homeland per se) he also sings one part “I love you my girl” I’m pretty sure he sings it this time for his daughter

You have listened to two great Phillipine singers. You will equally enjoy So Hyung "Everyone" and Park Hyu Shin's "Wildflower" which has a tragic story surrounding it's writing. He lost a dear friend to suicide and was terribly exploited by a management company. He was sued and lost after refusing to work. He had collapsed on stage from exhaustion.

If you haven't already you should take a look at the duet "Swan Goose" with Tengri and Dimash. They perform with these amazing Chinese musicians and a throat singer. So very cool.

Not an easy song to sing at all - but one of my favorites from China. My father in law introduced it to me. It is one of his favorite songs and Tengger is one of his favorite artists. Have tried to sing it at Karaoke with mixed results :) Switching between the distortion and clean so fast kills me. If you give me 2 seconds to "recover" I can do it but what he does in this song is super impressive.

His vocal control is top notch and I love how he performed the song. He used to be a rock singer, and his band is still around after more than 25 years. I still listen to this and it’s original song. Hua Hua also covered this song in a more angelic manner compared to this version that seem to represent his homeland in Mongolia and also him dedicating the song to his late daughter. Very touching.

  • @wnwangster

The other "competitors" were not really his competitors, they probably all grew up listening to his songs, as he was already a well established vocal artist in our parents generation. Tengri is a renowned Mongolian Chinese national treasure in his craft.

Industrialization has ruined the natural beauty of his homeland of Inner Mongolia, and this song is a plea to let it return to it's natural state. For a great demonstration on Y.Tube of the kind of polyphonic harmonic singing in the introduction, see "Anna-Maria Hefele - polyphonic overtone singing". KZ Tandingan's "Rolling In The Deep" also from Singer 2018 would be a good place to go next.

Yes, Hua did a version of this a few years ago, so you understand his reaction to hearing this live.
Tengri's version is like anger and remorse at what happened to his country, while Hua's version is the hope that it will be redeemed.

Teng Ger Er is his name, which should be three syllables as "təŋ“ ”gə“ ”ər“ when you say it. He is a singer from Inner Mongolia in China and he is a mongolian. HEAVEN is a song he wrote in 1997 when he was 37 years old, and HEAVEN refers to the grassland of his hometown in Inner Mongolia. But the show in this video happened in 2018, that was 8 years after his 6-year old daughter died of some kind of congenital disease. So i think his feelings in this singing must be different from the earlier's, which might mix the love for his hometown and his little daughter, and that's why many female listeners are deeper moved by this version than male listeners.
