I've had my ys640s for 4 years and I love it as a SMOKER, not a grill. Yes, you can grill on it, but nothing beats the weber kettle or gas grill for quick weeknight cooks. Awesome video, keep them coming.
I got a very cheap propane grill as a wedding gift many years ago and upgraded to a Weber Genesis several years later for Father's Day for myself. Used the heck out of it but when the ignitor went out (not hard to replace I know) I found that I really wasn't using it. Got a Blackstone griddle and replaced my Recteq with a Yoder and now I'm selling the Weber Genesis because I just have no need for a propane grill anymore. The Blackstone 36" griddle is all I need for doing those types of cooks and the Yoder fits the bill for everything else. Life is far more simple. #yodersmokers #pelletgrill
My only problem with my yoder ys640 with comp cart is it only has 2 prob ports. I do like the fireboard control just not the number of ports for probs. Like 4 prob ports. I load it with 4- 6 pork shoulders, 4 briskets, or 6 chuck roasts. I like to know temp all my meat is at.
Another great video. I think you have become the official or unofficial go to person for learning about Yoder, and cooking with it. My next smoker will be the Yoder YS640 when my current one dies. Keep up the great videos.
Awesome video and good points made.. definitely considering a Yoder but have been contemplating the lonestargrillz pellet grill because you can add wood chips into your pellets for even more flavor
Thanks. I’m not sure if that actually adds more flavor or not. Pellets burn slower and those small chips are going to burn quick. It’s def interesting, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yoder allowed ppl to do it. No official word yet. 🍻
I love my Yoder and recommend it to anyone looking to purchase a smoker. It might be a little more expensive but worth it. And the accessories are outstanding. #yodersmokers #pelletgrill
My questions… I have/had a Traeger (max 375 degrees) and a Camp Chef (max 300 degrees) that won’t get to or hold high temps despite being cleaned. Does this happen with Yoder? Also can I use the temp probes at high temps (e.g., searing steaks)?
Those temps sound low. I’d tried a better quality pellet like Bear Mountain to see if you can get it higher. The Yoder can do 600 no problem. It will do higher with the diffuser plate open. No, do not use the probes when searing. 🍻
How hard is it to use the direct flame? i.e., do you have to remove the 300 degree grill grate, then use a tool to get the plate off.. find a place to lay a 300 degree plate, then put the grate back on?
Lots of good info in this video, especially for new owners. On a different note, try ginger ale with your Appleton, we did and have never gone back to cola #yodersmokers #pelletgrill
Thanks Jake! I'm only going to pick one premium grill and I've been stuck between the Kamado Big Joe and the YS 640S. I finally picked the Yoder, solely because of the set it and forget it ability. I don't have the time for monitoring the grill temp for long cooks and thought the Yoder would work better. Time will greatly tell. Thanks much for all the information! I intend to purchase both the shelf covers, drip tray and a smoke tube. I will also purchase the cover though I intend to store the grill in my garage and wheel it out when needed. #YoderSmokers & #PelletGrill
I have had lots of grills and smokers over 50 years experience. The Y640s is fantasticly the best unit I ever had....No grease fires...Plenty of heat...searing capable...smokes well...get a tube if you want more....Holds temp...just be patient...Works great!

Good video. Although I've got a pellet smoker, I rarely use it. For people that are just going to have a pellet grill and that's it, seems like the Yoder is a good option. I had a Pitts and Spits and it was a fantastic pellet grill and had a grill zone. Only tried that once since I have several other options that are better for grilling. #yodersmokers #pelletgrill Hey there! Just saw your video. Considering the 480S due to space constraints. Was also checking out the Weber Searwood… Would love feedback. #yodersmokers #pelletgrill I'd like to get one of the Lone Star Grillz pellet smokers, as they seem to be in a league of their own in terms of smoke flavor (at least prior to the ones that let you put actual wood chunks in there... but IMO if you're going to put a piece of wood in there every 20-60 minutes, you may as well just use an offset). It also has some common sense design decisions I love, like the ash basket just being removable and easily dumped without having to take everything out of it. They sell an insert you can put in it that lets you direct grill with charcoal as well. They use FireBoard technology. I've done a lot of research, and it just seems like it's the best pellet smoker on the market if you want to use it like a pellet smoker (set it and forget it). Still, that is a long ways off, if ever. I need to get the deck rebuilt and expanded, then I'd like to get a KK... so who knows how long all that will take to save up for.
