Michael Lovett Thanks very much Michael ! It’s quite nice on this job as during the week we are on a 3 house terrace 9 m by 20 m , 6 trench block deep . It’s that long I’m sure each end is in a different postcode! 😳 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Love your videos guys I’m just a diy man but your vids give loads of insight to a job and I love the music it’s kinda chill trance from back in the days lol👍😂
Cheers pal we are glad you enjoy our channel. The music isn’t everybody’s cup of tea but we will never please everybody. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼🧱
The guy fails to secure the new walls to existing ones - either take bricks out and key it in OR use a wall starter kit WITHOUT that your wall may shift and even fall!!!
Gringo Xavier Thanks pal glad you like our channel . I worked on my own for 12 years before Alex left school so I’m used to solo work . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Paul Broughton Ah Berrys it’s like a builders sweet shop , you go in for a drill bit and come out with a carrier bag full of stuff ! Seriously though Berrys service and delivery are great. This job is in burscough. Thanks for watching and commenting as always pal 👍🏼
Richard Cole . Bricklaying is quite hard on the body but can be enjoyable and rewarding (occasionally!😳). Thanks for watching and commenting and glad you like our videos 👍🏼
Hi great video top notch work, I'm looking doing an extension in the summer. The se has given me drawings 5.6kn outer and 3.6 inner leaf. Do I need to use a 7kn turbo block in the footings do you know? I
hi mate, wondered if you can advise as you seem to know your stuff. witha concrete pour how high can you go with it to avoid extra brickwork, wondered if you can bring concrete level and then measure it so 1 concrete block is level with existing dpc? could be stupid question .. maybe why im a plasterer lol
sam craddock Hi Sam I think there is a Minimum depth of the bottom of the concrete for frost protection. Your finished level of your concrete is governed by the depth of your slab and depth of your insulation. On this job we did 100mm slab and 125mm polystyrene = 215 so 1 course of block on top of the concrete sounds ok . Mass filling with concrete is a lot easier and quicker but can get pricey. Hope that makes sense . Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽
Brendan Mcgivern Evening Brendan, I personally find them very similar but the Ox is way cheaper and lasts that bit longer , so it’s a no brainer for me 😏💷🧱👍🏼
After u lay ur first course of solid 12 (inch) block ...not sure what it is there... but there is no 8 inch block plus the vener? Im just curious what u do with the 4 inch gap?
Pablo Carter Hi Pablo , the big 12” block are called trench block . The 2 walls are built up level to the damp proof course with a 4” cavity . This stays clear below DPC and we put insulation in above DPC . In the next video we prepare and concrete the floor then in the one after that you will see us putting down the DPC and also putting insulation in the cavity as we build the walls up . Stay tuned 👍🏼 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex what do you do to make sure the insulation don't fall. Does the wall ties just hold it or do you have to put some sort of cavity tray.
Boss You Don't Need To Know . We put ties in quite close together to hold the insulation plus we put 100 mm in so it’s quite snug in the cavity . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Hi guys, I also return the inner course into the brick below dpc where doorways are going to be. I thought it was standard but amazing how many go straight through with but then surely have to knock it out when it comes to the insulation and screws stage? Is this common practice on sites do you know? Great job guys as usual! 👍
Very useful video! Im planning on building a timber framed garden room on an insulated concrete slab. Could i set up the foundations like you have in this video (but without the outer brick skin) or would you do it differently?
You could just set up a shutter fir your slab , no need for brickwork. I would personally would make the slab about 200 mm wider on each side just to spread the load a bit 🧱👍🏼
The foundation for the extension is deeper than the existing house foundation. This common across the country, but makes no sense, the caculations behind it are a bit suspect.
Michael Stevens we only actually dug to the top of the house concrete. On the one we are on now the inspector is making us dig to the bottom . We are already 1.2 m down 😳🧱👍🏼
Great video steve/Alex ? I take my hat off to u. U made loading - setting out - mixing and laying look easy ! Just a few questions- is there a reason why the slab wasnt dug out to required depth b4 trench blocks went in? Also did the extension not run flush with the gable as I noticed u left the down pipe in, seems a bit odd to set it in 100mm. Great vid 👍
Neil U.K. Hi Neil , digging the footing took 2 full days so with only working weekends we had to leave it (thank god!😳) once we were up to DPC me and Al dug it out , it was easier having the walls up to measure off . The extension is actually more like 200 mm back from the corner , that’s just how it was designed. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Good grafting, these smaller extensions don’t like like much but u can’t forget how much more labour intensive it is compared to site work. Keep the vids coming 👍
Your right there , a spirit level ,a bucket of tools and a shovel are all the basics that we “artists in burnt clay” need 😂. Brickies are too tight to be carpenters Thanks for watching and the regular comments 👍🏼
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex lol yeah your right my brothers a bricklayer ive learnt a lot from him i did some block work the other day its harder than it looks like my brother said bricklayers make it look easy
Hi guys, Learnt a lot from you guys, thanks. I’ve done the trench and just pored concrete today, all good so far. I’m laying trench block next week, what mix do you use? Do you add plasticity additive? TIA Ad
I'm sticking one on my house. I need a wet room I didn't want to move . But they want a 125 mm cavity on a house with a 50 mm cavity and a radon barrier on a house that hasn't got one . The world's finest mad . I'm not going to start this year IL wait till march
Kyle Croft . The talking thing isn’t something we a comfortable with at the moment but you never know in the future . Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏼
No worries Steve, I was also looking at the shed build videos and I’m thinking of upgrading my small brick shed into a bigger one out the back, my current shed that I inherited is about 2 metres wide x 5 metres and its to small for the woodworking I do so eventually I want to build a bigger rectangle a the back of the garden spanning the full width, only snag is i don’t have a side entrance and everything has to over a flat roof. Was going to use wood but concrete doesn’t rot. So I’ll keep watching to pick up some tips. Thanks for the response
Benjamin Harvey we have some older videos where we are using trench block in house foundations . We use them all the time. A lot quicker and easier than 2 skins cavity filled 👍🏼
Another great job, not much room to work, nice to watch a good tradesman
Michael Lovett Thanks very much Michael ! It’s quite nice on this job as during the week we are on a 3 house terrace 9 m by 20 m , 6 trench block deep . It’s that long I’m sure each end is in a different postcode! 😳

how is he professional? have you seen how he fails to tie in new wall with old? He is not even using a wall starter kit!!!
Great stuff guys
Adam mun . Thanks pal
Thanks for watching and commenting too 👍🏼
Hey great videos by the way ....
Thanks very much Pablo , just found your comment after a year 😬! 🧱👍🏽
Hello, Question: why do you place 1 coarse of those thick bricks instead of starting laying the cavity wall from the foundation ?
They are tench blocks specifically designed for this purpose and they are way quicker 🧱👍🏽
Hi great video top notch work, I'm looking doing an extension in the summer. The se has given me drawings 5.6kn outer and 3.6 inner leaf. Do I need to use a 7kn turbo block in the footings do you know?
I
Always 7 Newton in the footings 👌🏼🧱👍🏽.

Can you tell me is the new OX range more like MT because I came across a 11" wide london and it felt just like MT ???.
Many thanks
Brendan Mcgivern Evening Brendan, I personally find them very similar but the Ox is way cheaper and lasts that bit longer , so it’s a no brainer for me 😏💷🧱👍🏼
Great work boss
Shawn Lion . Cheers pal 👍🏼
Question, i have to raise a concrete floor 85mm at its highest, how would I do this screed? If so wa consistency 1 cement 4 sand?
spenceational86 . Hi mate , I’m sorry but I’m not qualified enough to give you advice on screeds pal , I’ve not got a clue about all that . 👍🏼

Cheers Jase . Brickwork never goes across door openings , the concrete always goes through to the outside skin . 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
A good worker

is the wod against the wall a gauge ? i if so how is it attached , dutch pins?
No pal just to hold the line , we use the existing brickwork to gauge off .
It’s held in with masonry nails 👌🏼🧱👍🏽

Neil U.K. Agreed no long stretches to get stuck into .
Mint im a carpenter and i wish i was a bricklayer carpentry to much tools needed

Chris Howell yes it’s all about repetition and practice but mainly having pride in what you do 👍🏼
Cannonball Lindz . Lol I got that off Eddie , a bricky I worked with for 12 years , when people asked what his job was that was his reply 😂😂
How you call the big concrete blocks that you put first?
Romulus Amy they are called trench blocks 🧱🧱👍🏽
Hi guys,
Learnt a lot from you guys, thanks. I’ve done the trench and just pored concrete today, all good so far.
I’m laying trench block next week, what mix do you use? Do you add plasticity additive?
TIA

Adam mun . Hi Adam g,ad it’s going well . We use 4 sand to 1 cement and some concentrated plasticiser (about 10 mls per mix ) 👍🏼
I'm sticking one on my house. I need a wet room I didn't want to move . But they want a 125 mm cavity on a house with a 50 mm cavity and a radon barrier on a house that hasn't got one . The world's finest mad . I'm not going to start this year IL wait till march

hi , how thick is your concrete footing, thanks
Joe DaMangu Evening Joe it was about 200 - 230 mm thick 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
What are your thoughts on the trench block vs brick and block and filling the gap?
Benjamin Harvey we have some older videos where we are using trench block in house foundations . We use them all the time. A lot quicker and easier than 2 skins cavity filled 👍🏼
hi , do you need strutural engineer for these type/size of extension, thank you.
Hi Joe, yes they need to check the roof construction 🧱👍🏽
What are the dimensions of the big blocks and where did you purchase them, thanks.
The Agenda trench blocks are 450 mm x 300 mm x 215 mm and are in most builders merchants 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Thanks.
The Agenda 🧱👍🏼
