This seems like a solid tried and true way of poke pole making. I want to make one, but a litter prettier. I want to make a 6ft walking stick and make a little poke pole end on the tip. :)
Excellent video, been wanting to try poke poling for a bit here and I think imma make my own now!
Right on! We have never bought one and have been doing it since we were kids. It works so well! Good luck!
How thick does the bamboo need to be?
Well done, friend. I’m gonna do it.
Great video on how to get it done man. Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks man!
Really great tutorial. Thank u.
Been thinking of finding an old yard sale fly rod & convert it into a tenkara pole.
I also like the coffee can 'reels'. Something low cost & effective, this could be adapted for catfishing in riprap near shore places with a bit more reinforcement.
TY
Great DIY video. I've never harvested river cane before but I assume if you're using it to poke pole that it's pretty strong like bamboo or an old broom handle?
Cane is pretty strong, but I would say bamboo is stronger. I use it because it is free and non-native, but honestly any sapling will work and simple willow poke poles, harvested the morning of, have yielded dozens of fish for us without breaking!
great vid! how long was the pole that you've used and where can I buy a bamboo stick btw ?
Thanks for watching! My girl and I caught 17 fish yesterday using these 50 cent poke poles! We out-fished everyone else out there who were using regular fishing rods! I cut invasive river cane, but you should be able to find bamboo at a hardware store. You can also cut any straight green sapling. Yesterday we cut some willow branches and they worked just fine. We prefer 7ft poke poles with a 1 ft wire end.
Green willow also works
Yup! Ive caught them on elder and eukalyptus too.
Subscribed! Do you dry and cure the bamboo poles? If so, what is your go to method?
Thanks for the sub! Honestly, we just cut the dead-standing (naturally seasoned) cane that is free of cracks and pin holes from burrowing insects. It seems to work just fine!
You want to form a tight bond with the shaft
Lol, I didn't even catch that one!
subbed!
Thanks buddy!
How long should the poke pole be?
6-7ft is fine.
Awesome i
Thanks! We hope it helped!
What size hooks? 2/0?
Size 2-4. I like barbed circle hooks as they are less likely to snag and if you are poke poling in the right area, there had ought to be a lot of potential snags. Good luck!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 thxz for this info! Hmm smallest circle hooks I have is a size 1. Hopefully that'll work!
I sure do miss you guys, hope all is well.
Thanks bud! We will be back soon. Finally got my dissertation draft submitted and car fixed, so we are jumping back into filming now!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Awesome, see you soon. 👏👏👏👏👏
addition since I am incompetent just add gorilla glue and also duct tape still just a lot of duct tape and gorilla glue
Fantastic idea!
Thanks! Though, I cannot say it was our idea. We learned how to make these when we were kids and have had great success with such a simple setup ever since!
Duct tape great for kidnaping and poke poke diy.. lol
