Maybe the thinking is that a hooked crab has a higher mortality rate and since they have to be a certain size to keep, they'd rather people not target crabs like that and end up inadvertently killing more undersized ones? Friends in Oregon & WA think it's dumb that we can keep female dungeness and they can't but I have to remind them that their season in year round and ours only 8mo, plus we have hella more people fishing in CA than WA or OR, so if we could crab year round-- even if we couldn't keep females-- it'd probably not be sustainable for the crab population. All about finding a balance. As an aside, if you were surf fishing in CA and hooked into a crab you'd have to release it..... but you could also run after it after you've released it and catch it by hand and that would be OK lol

Preaching to the choir my friend :) I hook dungies all the time while surfcasting for perch that go after my gulp sandworms and wish I could just throw them in the bucket.... which is why I calmly release them in a shallow part of the surf, run to put my pole down, then run back to hunt. it. down. 8 times out of 10 I can re-catch it by hand and THEN it goes in the damn bucket.
