I was always impressed by the skill & fighting ability of some of the German WT guys, particularly Ulli Portsteffen & Christian Feldmeier - Ulli (RIP) was a very good technician and teacher, whilst Christian was a great street fighter who took on and beat a lot of other Wing Chun Sifu’s (Austin Goh, Eddie Yeoh, Derek Jones, Victor Kan, Nino Bernardo etc) back in the day, as well as a number of other martial artists and pro boxers. Nice, humble guy, who could really fight and was probably the best fighter at the time in the German WT Leung Ting/Keith Kernspecht association.
I trained under the late Derek Jones also Simon Lau back then There was no German instructor that challenged / fought Austin / Eddie / Derek and Victor ( who was older ) that I remember ? That’s all we all new about in the UK MA community ( both challenges were covered - see RUclips today for record ) Please let me know ( genuinely) if you have any details about the other challenge matches you mentioned above ?
@@amospizzey1 These were not so much challenge matches but let’s just call them extremely competitive and lively chi-sau sparring that in some cases ended up with a bloodied nose (in the case of Eddie Yeoh) etc. I think this was around 1985 give or take a year or two when Feldmeier came over to the UK to teach some seminars and trained with each of these instructors. It was interesting to get Christian’s insight into the abilities of the different Sifu’s since it was at the height of the William Cheung ‘I can beat anyone’ hype (wasn’t the Jones-Sykes fight partly as a result of this?). From memory Feldmeier mentioned that Austin Goh was the best WC guy he faced in the UK - both in terms of technical skills and fighting ability. I personally found Christian and some of the other German WT guys to be really good fighters when at the time a lot of UK WC guys were great technically but lacked real fighting experience or didn’t incorporate hard sparring in their training, whereas it was clear that most of the German guys were good at both.
@ great insight brother . As a boy I trained under Derek right in the middle of the so called “ wing chun wars “ having some overview of these instructors ( all good ) Derek was by far the most “ effective “ in reality . You’re 100% correct he switched from Victor Kan to William Cheung before I started ( the whole secret style story is absolutely rubbish as we now now post Emin ) Like William Cheung Derek had an open challenge that Bob Sykes ( great fighter and good man ) accepted through combat magazine. We all went up to Huddersfield from London to witness the fight ( no rules / no time limits - this was before UFC1 so truly ground breaking) the fight lasted approximately 8/9 mins ( long time in a real fight ) and ended when Bob dropped Derek with a right cross ( Bob went in to be a serious kick boxer ) both men ended the match as friends / both sustained some damage , both men deserve respect as they were the only ones as far as I know to actually show up and fight based on the challenge. This was a life changing moment for me as I clearly saw the limitations of the WC system in reality ( Derek was really good ) First at long range ( it’s not always possible to apply forward pressure on a good boxer belive me I’ve tried ) second the fight went to the ground 2/3 times and as neither fighter had BJJ / grappling nothing happened. I rerturned to traditional Shotokan under Enoeda Sensie and a few years later was badly beaten by a boxer ( I was an idiot as a boy ) I then went seriously into kickboxing/ boxing for many years then took up bjj about 7 years ago . Today at 57 I train both MMA and BJJ regularly here in LA ( I’m old and slow but martial arts are a foundation part of my life and development as a man ) Recently I’ve started being able to understand Chi Sau in a clinch / grappling concept ( BJJ is a bit like full body Chi Sau ) I also spent a few years back then under Simon Lau and his style of WC was MUCH more hardcore ( chi Sau with mouth guards / felt more like wrestling in a clinch ) IMHO he has produced the best WC fighters in the UK ( Wei Po Tang / Gary McKenzie / James Sinclair etc though all left and have their own great schools now ) The main thing I’ve learnt is ALL effective fighting styles ( boxing / kickboxing/ Muay Thai/ wrestling/ BJJ / judo / MMA etc ) have one thing in common , ALL are based around pressure tested competitive hard sparring at their foundation core ( every one ) Notice there is never any question as to which version is best as all are routinely required to fight opponents to answer the question repeatedly. The real problem with the “wing chun wars “ was that no one really fought and so believed they could based on classmates or some poor unsuspecting guy on the street .
