- The power steering cylinders were leaking badly rendering the power steering useless. With simple tools and an inexpensive rebuild kit, they came back to live.

Once you repair the cylinder, how do you get it back on the tractor?
It is a bolt on cylinder, only two bolts.
How do u remove the cylinder
There is one bolt in one end and the ball join in the outer end. Just two nuts, very simple. Disconnect the 2. Hydraulic hoses as well.
I remove the nut from my MF360 but the threaded shaft doesn’t come out easy. There is a slot like you are supposed to use a large flathead screwdriver maybe?
***NOTE***
**I hope this helps someone out**
There are 2 power steering fittings that go into each cylinder. 1 long fitting, and 1 short fitting.
The “long” power steering fitting that goes into the cylinder is Massey Ferguson part #3029953M91.
The “short” power steering fitting that goes into the cylinder is Massey Ferguson part #7003936M91.
I have replaced these several times on my 1998 Massey Ferguson 231. They will easily snap off if you’re not careful!
I have a ton of information on the 231 tractor if anybody needs anything!
Thank you for sharing that info, I'm sure that if your broke your a few times, more people will be in the same situation. The hoses are kind oof exposed and easy to get caught on branches.
I have a 263 with cylinders like those i have a rebuild kit and i may try to fix mine . It does not leak externally but bleeds internally.
It is an easy job, I hope you can get them fixed. I believe this month I will work with the tractor with power steering for the first time. I can't wait. Good luck with you repair and thank you for checking the video.
You are a smart, gifted man. The Massey Ferguson 231 is by far my favorite tractor that I’ve ever owned. I’ve had mine for 17 years. It’s a 1998 model. I gotta put a new muffler and a power steering fitting on it.
Thank you very much. I agree, I really do love the sound of the Perking engine, so round. As a friend of mine say, it sound like if the pistons were made of rubber, very mellow. You have to love these old, overbuild, iron block tractors, they will outlast any modern tractor.

I have a 1232 MF, and my steering cylinder leaks. I cannot remove the threaded shafts at each end. The castle nuts are off, but the threaded shafts will not budge, with persuasion and penetrating oil. Suggestions?
Correction...1233 MF tractor
I would take a propane torch and heat them up. Not burn them but add heat. Then use a large Knipex pliers for leverage and they should come out.
How do you bleed the system after reinstalling? I replaced on of the cylinders due to a busted ball joint. Steering is extremely hard now when before I could turn it with 1 finger
I actually never bleed the system it just worked. I guess that air bubbles will be pushed to the pump oil reservoire. However if you think you may have air, try to loosen up the highest connectors, at the power steering control valve. Just crack them loose and see if while engine is running and you turning the wheel it releases any air.
Or perhaps the pump is is not working…
Hi!! I have a question. I have a 231s. The power steering has gotten harder to work over the past 8-ish hours. When I pull the filter, it’s frothy, so I suspect air in the line. How do I bleed the line? I’m a rookie.
Note: The 231s has a slightly different pump and filter set up than yours. I also have a quick connect at the rear of the tractor - is that where I bleed?
Hi Tina, it seems to me more like you have water in the oil. Oil should be transparent when new and water emulsion would make oil look like a milkshake. I would drain the oil and add new one. Run the tractor it should stay clear. Have you ever changed that fluid and filter?. Is the tractor stay under the rain?
Do you have video to remove cylinder
No, but it is very simple, just to bolts and the two hydraulic little tubes. Five min each.
Why it there an orange zip tie on the tie rod end?
I marked the right cylinder with a zip tie as well as both right hydraulic hoses on both sides of the tractor. Just a marker.

Where did you get the re-seal kit? I have a 1998 Massey Ferguson 231.
I got them on Amazon, link in the description in the video. I believe you can buy them on ebay as well.
