Добавлен 15 янв 2021
BUTTEWORKS is a channel about my journey learning the crafts and skills around homesteading, equipment repairs, generators and solar panels, farming, tractors, tools, animals stewardship, woodworking, metalwork etc.
I just started the very first steps of developing my 10 acres farm from scratch and with not much farming experience. I want to share with you my journey pursuing my dream of self reliance, self sustained life. As somebody said, it is not about the destination but about the person you become during the journey.
I have no background in these fields so every project is always something new I need to learn by doing. Many times fearing breaking something and turning an easy job into an expensive mess but always embracing the risks and the lessons that comes with them.
Thank you for watching my videos.

Do mowing the apiary get bees upset?
After my first experience mowing the apiary with the weedwhacker where I got attached by the bees, I thought that mowing with the tractor and cero turn would be even works. To my surprise after smoking the bees, they were super chill the whole time. My mistake when using the weedwhacker was not using smoke before I started.

Nice job. Massy is looking strong. Bees were so calm I bet you could mow next time without the bee suit 😳
Thank you for checking the video, and yes, I may give it try without the suit, I think the trick is smoke them first real well. They seems to like the sound of the Perking diesel engine.
Just what I was thinking, the steering gearbox fluid has to be extracted. I have to do this to my 1998 MF 231. I need to buy a fluid extractor. I see you have a link in the description of where you got yours. THANK YOU for adding all the links of parts and tools that you use and for all of the videos on your Massey Ferguson 231! This past August (2024) I’ve owned my 231 for 17 years!!! It has been, by far, my most favorite tractor I’ve owned. The only major problem I’ve had out of it was a blown head gasket about 4 years ago. White smoke went everywhere!! It blew on the exhaust side, so no water got in the engine. Can’t beat a Massey Ferguson or that little 3 cylinder Perkins diesel!!!!!! Like yours, mine sits out in the weather also, and I ABSOLUTELY HATE THAT!!!! If you or anyone else needs ANY information or specs on the 231, I have the operators manual, parts manual, and service manual! Let me know and I’ll get you the information you need for free!!! Won’t cost you a copper penny!!!
The pump I use to get the fluid out work great, it was a good purchase. I have used on other tools as well. I can't wait to built a carport in the next coming months to keep the tractor away from rain, sun, etc... Thank you for offering help with the parts. I may reach out when I get to the hydraulic pump overhaul. The transport works great but the draft (pushing into the ground) I don't think it does.
“Massey Ferguson all day!” Yep, you got that right buddy!! 👍🏻 💯
Man, are you losing coolant? The engine oil looks milky like it has water in it.
Coolant level is stable, I believe it got rain water in the engine. I keep it under a tarp, bit it is not big enough. I'm keeping an eye on the oil color now. Thank you for point it out.
Do you know anything about the steering gearbox under the steering wheel? How do you change the oil? What kind of lube goes in it? How much does it hold?
In my last video, painting the MF i change the oil under the steering column, is that the one you mean?. It is called I believe steering box. I may be wrong.
@@BUTTEWORKSyes that’s it! Thanks! I found my owner’s manual and it states to use Permatran 3 fluid, which is basically a hydraulic/transmission/differential fluid. It takes .95 U.S. quarts (almost a quart of fluid).
First, thank you so much for this video. You helped me change out my compressor. Quick question for you. My 2014 GMC Sierra shows 0.6 kg (or 1.4lb) of refrigerant. By the book, it says that the car requires 22.4ozs of freon or just under 2 cans of freon (if you have 12oz cans). It looks like you were using 12oz cans of freon (I bought the same as you) but you put in 29-30ozs of freon. Curious how you got the information to put in 2.5 cans of Freon. Would love to see how you were thinking about it. thank you again!!!
I don't' recall where I found the amount for my truck but it was a list for all GMC vehicles, all years and models. I used 2.5 cans as recommended and so far it is running great. I'm sure if you use 2 cans it will work as well. I just made a quick search and there are multiple pages with service manual pictures showing 1.6lbs (25-29oz) for GMC Sierra 1500 year 2014. I'm glad you found the video useful.
@@BUTTEWORKS Thank you! I really appreciate that. BTW - also replaced my condenser and that video was magic as well!
A tractor just isnt a tractor unless it has the flappy thingy. Mine is on order.
Thank you very much for sharing this!
Thank you for checking the video, I'm glad it helped you.
You are a smart, gifted man. The Massey Ferguson 231 is by far my favorite tractor that I’ve ever owned. I’ve had mine for 17 years. It’s a 1998 model. I gotta put a new muffler and a power steering fitting on it.
Thank you very much. I agree, I really do love the sound of the Perking engine, so round. As a friend of mine say, it sound like if the pistons were made of rubber, very mellow. You have to love these old, overbuild, iron block tractors, they will outlast any modern tractor.
@@BUTTEWORKS 💯
***NOTE*** **I hope this helps someone out** There are 2 power steering fittings that go into each cylinder. 1 long fitting, and 1 short fitting. The “long” power steering fitting that goes into the cylinder is Massey Ferguson part #3029953M91. The “short” power steering fitting that goes into the cylinder is Massey Ferguson part #7003936M91. I have replaced these several times on my 1998 Massey Ferguson 231. They will easily snap off if you’re not careful! I have a ton of information on the 231 tractor if anybody needs anything!
Thank you for sharing that info, I'm sure that if your broke your a few times, more people will be in the same situation. The hoses are kind oof exposed and easy to get caught on branches.
Man, that was an excellent idea to put the ziplock bag on the end of the lines and get all that old fluid out! I snapped off 1 of the fittings that goes into the left power steering cylinder on my 231 the other day while going through some brush. It’s about the 4th time I’ve done this! Easy fix though. Lost all the fluid, but was able to get it back on the trailer before I could no longer steer it.
Thank you for your comment. Even with you fluid you can still steer the tractor, just mechanical. I drove mine like that for a year. Now that I have the power steering working it feels so much better.
Can’t beat a Massey Ferguson or a Perkins diesel!!!
Iron machine, indestructible.
Noooo!! It’s supposed to be Massey Ferguson Red man!!! 😅
hahaha, I'm glad you are still subscribed.
@@BUTTEWORKS I will always stay subscribed to your channel, man. I love the 231 (I have a 1998 year model), you’re a whizz with that tractor, and you are a good person. I also love how you got all your parts posted in the bottom the video description.
Legit video not too much video fluff and great camera work
Thank you, very much appreciated.
i have a MF240 and have been searching everywhere for videos on maintenance and operation tips... Your tractor seems similar enough. LOL Great videos, Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I'm glad you can use this information on your tractor.
Great video. Any update on the pile?
Thank you, I'm in my second pile. First one got used planting trees. I will review the current one on a following video.
This has been the best video I have found to explain this topic! Great job!
Thank you very much for your comment.
Well Done! I appreciated your drawing...very clear.
Thank you for checking the video, I'm glad it has helped you.
Great work, brother, you answered my disabled questions to diagnose what exactly is broken and now the question is, can't you remove it without the special tool? And its extra to buy it?
The tool is extra to buy. If you get creative you could get it out. But the tool was not that expensive. Although it is a tool that won't get much use after the first time. Thank you for checking the video.
@@BUTTEWORKS Thank you for your interest in your return.
Just acquired a 1999 Massey Ferguson 231S. So glad I found your videos - thank you so much for sharing them. It is definitely appreciated. I'll be changing the fluids & filters this weekend with you as my guide.
Thank you for your comment, enjoy the MF, it is a great tractor.
If you have a bonded generator with a transfer switch that breaks/transfers the neutral conductor as well as the hot wires do you leave the bonding wire on the generator?
I'm not familiar how transfer switches work.
Not today.
As your neighbor, please don’t use gasoline. Learn from my mistakes. Diesel is less volatile.
Hahaha where is the fun then. I almost lost my eyebrows!!!
Great job Ruben! If you need to have a test run with the mower attachment, you're welcome to come up the road and take care of my 6 ac. pasture. The "White Rino" is a good name, but I vote for "Bad Ass MF". 😛
hahahaha thank you. Next time you get stuck on mud fell free to call White Rhino towing services.
Wow, awesome paint job. I love the barbed wire trim. You have done a great job on all the restoration for this tractor. Now you are ready to put her to work.
Thank you for checking de video, I'm glad you liked it. Now it is time for her to wake up from hibernation and make some dust.
👌👌👍👍 Nice paint job! But I must say that old oil looked awfully milky. It shouldn't look like that. Old oil should be dark brown. Water must have gotten into that oil, probably because it sat outside uncovered for a long time. I would run the engine for no more than a few minutes and then change the oil again. If you are going to keep the tractor parked outside, at least put a cover on the top of the muffler.
Thank you for the comment, I then need to find out how water is getting into the engine. I have a tarp covering the tractor always and a little bucket over the exhaust. I think I'll get a larger tarp that cover the tractor all the way to the ground. Now that you mention that I'm going to keep a closer look to the oil. Will change it back soon then. Thank you again, good info.
@@BUTTEWORKS And you should probably take a look at the oil in the transmission. It can get water in the oil also.
@@texascottonfarmer I checked via de dip stick and looks clear, but will drain a sample. The water in engine oil has me intriged.
That is totally different, & my eyes never did get adjusted to what I'm seeing. I do like the the custom lettering you did, & the barb-wire. That's a good name for the tractor White-Rino, & the tractor sounds💪💪💪💪💪!!! Nice job.
hahaha I agree, it is a radical change. For tractors, unlike cars, colors are their identity. Happens in motocross bikes too, each brand has a color, never changes. It was a fun project though. This MF is unique now. Thank you for checking the video.
@@BUTTEWORKS Thanks for putting the video out for viewing.
The “new” Massey Ferguson looks great in Bob Cat colors.
I've watched probably 20 videos on generators to be hooked up to power a home and this is first one I've seen that even touched on, much showed how to, changing the bonding. I have the 9500DF but have yet to get it set up and this video gave me the last piece of the puzzle!
I'm glad the video has helped you out. Thank you for the comment.
WTF....!
Looking at your auger turning above the ground it looks like it is bent or out of round, it will bind up once it is turning in the ground. replace the auger and it will work properly.
You are right, I bend it when I had no idea what i was doing and half way in I moved the tractor forward to get it straight. Thank you for checking the video.
Hi, can you tell me how many o rings does ac compressor has on 14 gmc Sierra. 5.3
I don't know what you mean with o-rings. I used two rubber-metal washers on the inlet and outlet pipes. One on each.
Perfect
Very helpful tip!
Thank you for checking the video.
The Weedeater goes Buzzzzz... Mix 2 Cups of Salt with 2 Cups of Vinegar and a squirt of Dawn Dish Soap and spray the grass around the hive... Works pretty good, and the bees don't get upset.
Thanks a lot, I didn't want to use any chemical around the hives but if this one you mention works, man way to go. I'll be trying next weekend. Thank you.
@@BUTTEWORKS I heard it on Barnyard bees. I thought, no, it won't work, so, I tried it.. I had vines, little plants, poison ivy, grass, etc... It killed everything but the grass quickly within a day or so. Some of the grass turned brown.. Still waiting on the rest of the grass.. I will look at it today or tomorrow, but, I can't see it not working on the grass the way it did the rest of the stuff, but, stranger things have happened. I turned the sprayer on a stream vs light spray... When I first started spraying, the sprayer was working fine.. Spraying a finer wet mist.. It started screwing up, like it had some trash in it, so, I opened it up to get a spray more like a stream when I was doing the other stuff. Maybe the light wet mist wasn't enough? Maybe it is a root thing? I need to mix up some more and get more of the yard. I just mixed and tested a gallon.. But, if you try it, make sure you test spraying on the grass, and some direct down toward the roots to be sure. BTW... Mowing is much better than weedeating.. I can get away with passing by with a mower usually. There is something about that buzz and things popping up against the hive that spells danger.
@@MarkThomas123 I already have the sprayer ready. Will try the next weekend, Also got an small sickle as another person recommended to cut the grass and spray right after. I really appreciate your help, thank you for the info.
@@BUTTEWORKS I only sprayed/tested a gallon in an area. Acted fast on weeds/ivy, etc.. Burned the leaves and wilted everything in one day. But, didn't do that much to the weeds. I had enough to make one more gallon, so, I focused on the grass around the area, since it didn't seem to have the same effect. I'll look at it today and then in a few days again to see what it did. This time, focus on the grass itself. Let you know what I find, but, may not be as effective, because, I know I sprayed some grass before and didn't see a bunch of brown grass, so, we'll see. Hope it works better.. Ha.. Especially in your case.. Might try to find some Matts of some sort to lay on the ground extending a foot or two out from the hives before you set them... Anything to keep from having to weedeat.. Ha..Ha.. :)
slackers, ya I know the feeling
Two more weeks or one day they will find themselves swimming in a crockpot.
I use a scythe around my hives. Early in the morning a scythe works best when the grass is still wet. My bees hate weedeaters too.
I had to search what a scyte is. I think I'll get one to clean around the hives. Thank you for the comment and recommendation.
Kept bees for twenty five years. Forty dollars is getting too expensive. I’ve raised queens. The expense as a hobby isn’t worth it anymore.
I totally agree, beekeeping is very expensive. In my case it is my ag exception so I need to have it, but it seems cheaper having a couple of cows free ranging instead.
The second hive is filled with very aggressive bees. I follow a channel that has 12 hives and he had one that was very aggressive. You do not want to create overly aggressive bees as they will release that attitude into all bees over time. You can calm them down by giving them a new Queen. The Queen is responsible for their level of aggression. Introducing a new Queen to an aggressive hive can be tricky, I recommend ordering two Queens and if the first one is accepted, then use the second one for a new hive. Good luck.
Thank you for the advice. If I smoke the hives they kind of relax a lot. I think the sound and vibration of the trimmer in the legs of the hive stand rattle them. But I'll keep an eye during inspection to see how they behave. If they are too aggressive I may have to change queens.
@@BUTTEWORKS BW ~ I only know enough to realize I don't know enough. Yeah, they did not approve of the weed whacker one little bit. Sorry you got multi-stung. Best of luck.
@@BiterAvid Then you know more and I know hahaha. Thank you for checking the video.
I like your channel. Are you located in Central Texas, if not, which state? I am a subscriber as of today.
Thank you for subscribe, I appreciate it. I'm in south TX.
Wow, I have a 2014 Silverado and have yet to see a video as detailed and nicely edited as yours. I am about to do this same task. So glad I found your site. Just subscribed.
Thank you very much. I'm glad the videos are useful to you. Take it easy and you'll get it done, this job is just time consuming but not complicated.
lol "i'm gonna leave the trimmer...screw dat!"
Why are you killing moths?
If they get inside the hives their larvae will destroy the comb and the bee colony will die. Plus all the frames would need to be burned. They are nasty when they get inside a hive. Last year I lost 3 out of 7 hives to moth.
Excellent!
👌👌👍👍 Thanks for the video.
My pleasure, thank you for checking it out.
Great video question I replaced the compressor and I’m still having a issue with the clutch it only comes on intermittent or if I tap it with a hammer any solutions what that can be it’s a brand new compressor
I would check the connectors cables going to the compressor to make sure they are ok, but if it works when tapping on it, it may be a defective compressor.
@@BUTTEWORKS thank you for the info appreciate it!!
And btw it’s a brand new one is it possible for it to be bad??
Hello! Many thanks! for a valuable Video. Do you know if the job you do, on your Gearbox, is done the same way on my Automatic Gearbox, which is called, TF-71SC? Then I want to ask you what is the name of your diagnostic tool, with which you check the temperature of the gearbox oil? Thanks! From Tommy Bertilsson from Sweden
I'm not familiar with the TF-71SC. The tool I used to check the temperature is called Icarsoft. A left a link to the tool in the description in the video.
Do you have video to remove cylinder
No, but it is very simple, just to bolts and the two hydraulic little tubes. Five min each.
yep, i agree, even I understand what took place, but the one thing I still haven't seen or heard is what does it hurt to have two bonded instead of onel? Honest question on my part since I don't know why, but I know how now anyway.
Imagine you have a short to ground, that means neutral is hot, that means the neutral in your generator would be hot but since it is floating, the current will go to the ground on the panel. Is you neutral is bonded, now your generator frame is hot. No bueno. Thank you for checking the video.
you make it look too easy Im going to replace mine today
Good luck, just take your time. And remember, sometimes, bolts gives you a hard time to get out, video editing remove lot of that hassle hahaha. So a bit of struggle is normal.
