    This is some classic gold and nothing could change that
    Eric is 18 in this. By their time standards, 16 is young adult, Eric has to take the throne by 21 and get married by 19 or 20, so you can understand why he's being pressured to get married. But being the romantic that Eric is, he just couldn't bring himself to do that.

      @gingerlemon865 11 месяцев назад +4

      No, I see it as Eric isn't the first born prince. That's why it was flexible compared to an arranged marriage. He got the choice to say no to offers. Nobody crowded him when he and Ariel went into town. Compare him to Prince Phillip who didn't have a choice (luckily the girl he fell for turned out to be the Princess).

      @onetruenightking I think that the reason why nobody crowded him when he went into town was because of his down to earth personality and not necessarily because he wasn’t the first born prince, at the beginning of the movie, he was uncomfortable with the idea of presenting himself in a proud and mighty image and he treated the people around him as his equals, in a lot of animated movies, clothing is also part of the character, and Eric’s clothing isn’t exactly what you would expect a prince to wear because the clothes were part of his character.
      In line of succession rules, since Eric was only 18 and his parents were assumed to have passed away, it was natural for the kingdom to want him to meet someone and get married before he takes the throne as king, as the life expectancy was a lot shorter than what we have today, it was actually very common for people in that time period to have children before they turned 20, especially with the royal family because they need an heir as soon as possible, the people around them will discuss the matter of marriage to them, but since there are certain boundaries that servants cannot cross even when discussing those things, they can’t really interfere with the choice of the prince or the princess, they could encourage the prince or princess to make certain choices, but if the prince/ princess says no, then they can’t really do anything about it. I also think that the fact that there was no arranged marriage was because how Eric wasn’t fond of the idea of forcing himself to be with someone and they eventually gave up trying to convince him to have arranged marriage and chose to have princesses come to meet him instead but still had no luck in terms of meeting the person that fits Eric’s personality.Eric did have the pressure on him to make a decision as soon as possible, even a few decades ago, having children before the age of 20 was considered normal, and with the background of the story where kings still have absolute power, Eric did have to make up his mind as soon as possible.
      I think the reason why it was seen as flexible was because from the way Eric and Grimsby talked about the matter, Eric was really set on the idea that his perfect woman wasn’t any of the princesses that had came to him, from what I know about Eric, since he was hoping for a true connection between him and the person he’s married to and consider his down to earth personality, a traditional and serious princess that do everything according to proper decorum just wasn’t for him, and the flexible part came out because how stubborn he was about those super traditional princesses are not for him, it’s like how princess Jasmine also had the power to say no to suitors when she was clearly the only child and the firstborn.

    "But without my voice, how can I..."
    "You'll have your looks, your pretty face. And don't underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE!"
    Fun Fact: Ariel (Jodi Benson) is the first red-haired Disney princess.
    Art Enthusiast Fact: Ariel's (Jodi Benson) treasure grotto includes the painting Magdalene With The Smoking Flame (1640) by 17th-century artist Georges de la Tour.
    Mythology Fact: In Greek mythology, the God of the sea is Poseidon, or Neptune in Latin. This movie's sea king has the name Triton (Kenneth Mars), one of Neptune's sons. Many merfolk appear in the film, but Ursula (Pat Carroll) is a lesser-known type of mythological creature known as a cecaelia: human upper body and octopus lower body.
    Disney Cinematic Universe Fact: It's possible that Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes) could be related to Prince Phillip (Bill Shirley) and Princess Aurora (Mary Costa) from Sleeping Beauty (1959). In the dining room in Eric's castle on Ariel's (Jodi Benson) first evening on land, there is a painting hanging on the wall. The couple bear a striking resemblance to Aurora and Phillip.
    Music Enthusiast Fact: Part Of Your World (1989) was nearly cut; Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that it was "boring" and far too over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. At a test screening children were restless during the song which did not have finished animation. In particular one child that sat in front of Katzenberg and spilled his popcorn and was more interested in picking it up than watching the sequence. John Musker, Ron Clements, and Howard Ashman all pleaded their case and begged Katzenberg to let the song stay to no avail. Ultimately, the one who managed to convince him to give it a second chance was the animator of the sequence, Glen Keane. Another screening was set up, this time with an adult audience. It was a greater success (even reportedly moving some members to tears) and so the song was left in the film. Katzenberg later said that he was happy no one listened to him because he couldn't imagine the film without the song.

    It’s always interesting to see adults watching these movies for the first time. I grew up with a lot of them as a kid, and assumed everyone else (who *could,* anyway) was the same. Silly me for assuming in the first place, huh? 😅
    This one holds a special place in my heart, because it’s the first one I ever memorized. 😊

    Ursula was a great villain and has a fab song.
    Ron Howard directed a modern Little Mermaid romantic comedy, set in NYC. called Splash in 1984. It starred Tom Hanks. He is rescued by a blond mermaid played by the lovely Daryl Hannah. As much as I like his dramas, I wish Tom had done some more comedy.

    The sequel to this " Return to the Sea" is quite good as well. I'd say the villain is a less strong. But I did love the story and the opening song to that movie I'd say I like better than any song in this original. They got a lot of the original voice cast to come back. And compared to all the other disney Direct-to-Video/DVD sequels it's definitley one of the best ones.
