    To keep those straps from turning the cab of your car into a giant guitar box, put 2-3 twists in each part that is taught in the wind. Without this, it can get pretty loud and on long stretches of highway. The noise is coming from the tight, flat, strap vibrating as it slices through the air. A few twists in each of those 4 spots will do it.

    • @Tom-cn4cm
      @Tom-cn4cm 4 года назад

      Would that reduce tensile strength?

    • @pmang6
      @pmang6 4 года назад +4

      @@Tom-cn4cm Not in my experience, and it shouldnt matter because if you are getting anywhere near the breaking point of the strap you have things strapped down way too tight and you are probably denting your car's roof severely.

    I used a homemade setup like this for years and never had a problem on my sedan. I used a pool noodle cut in half lengthwise lol. Last year I got temporary roof racks that work better, but this is a nice cheap solution and it works.
    Pro tip:
    Twist the straps so they don't make any noise when you're driving. When you keep them flat like that they will flap in the wind and that will annoy the hell out of you on a long trip.

    CAUTION!!!!!! BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. It works great if it doesn't rain. But if it does rain, water, I should say dirty water, will run down those straps through the crack in the doors and onto to the headliner of the rental car STAINING it BADLY. Trust me on this. It will ruin the headliner of the rental car.

    I just bought that rack system for my new kayak. Don't like those cam buckle straps. You can't tighten the straps enough to make the rack truly immobilized. The best straps are the rachet tie-down straps. This is what I used formerly with my canoe and I didn't have to tie both ends to bumpers. But you have to be careful. Too much tension means too much pressure and it can put the hull out of shape.

    Mr Skinner. I have a fluke/flounder question and know this isn’t the video topic. Plz forgive me. Plz help, I recently bought a yardsale tackle box and found small bags of what I think are teasers that I’m not familiar with. These “teasers” look like flower petals, think shiny silver, green and gold leaf shaped blades. Also some chrome beads and these metal “u loops” with holes in the ends. I’ve seen them on store bought rigs. I’d like to search google to learn how to tie them, use them. Can’t find anything because I think my search terms are too general. Hoping you might link me in the right direction. Sincerely appreciate yours and your followers help. Thx u.
