how to....timing marks for VW lt35 Volvo d5252

To adjust the pump timing could you just rotate the body of the pump instead of using the crankshaft pulley locking tool without any belt on?

When you have locked it down. Can you put the new belt on and tensioners and tigtehm the camshalf pulley up at the top. Then run it?
