    I just bought the f/4 version after owning the f/2.8. Loved the 2.8 but the weight was still too much for being used over a few hours walking around. I still wish Canon would make a RF version of their 70-300mm L lens. The new f/4 is a keeper though! Keep the vids coming

      Same here. The F4 seems very nice for travel. I need more time with both of them but damn, the f4 just demands to be taken anywhere. And just found out, the weather elements can’t harm the red rings, so that’s also great!

      How about between the F2.8 24-70mm vs. F4 24-105mm? Having owned both focal lengths, which one would you recommend? One has the low light advantage, the other has an extra reach plus it's significantly less expensive. I do a lot of event/ night-life photography.

    • @af2w131f
      @af2w131f 3 года назад +1

      @@sonicvboom I’ve owned both. 24-105mm is amazing lens for my travel/vacation and for that extra reach at 105mm especially. But if you’re mainly event/lowlight then your best bet is the 24-70mm. 2.8 is critical so you don’t have to boost up the ISO to really high levels.

      I can totally relate. I bought an F2.8 EF 70-200mm when I first started photography 15 years ago. Absolutely hated launging that piece of HEAVY glass to every event shoot; Found it an absolute *CHORE* to use that lens. Canon has definitely come a long way with regards to prioritizing/ catering to their user experience - especially in the weight department. I believe I may come to like the 70-200 focal length if and when I do pick up the new RF lens 🤓🤓

    I guess the best thing is that you go straight to the point instead of wasting time on pixels peeping. Audio on the vids is also great - including the fact that your voice is nice and calm - I'm tired of all the frantic self-assuring technical expert ted-talky voices out there. Feels I'm listening a trusted friend honestly advising me about some seriously expensive stuff I want to buy.
    Got the RF 70-200 f/4, btw. Thanks for the help! Oh, and the photos you take are beatiful. Love to that kind of great material instead of the usual "stuff I shot on my backyard minutes before recording for my YT channel" ppl usually do

      Thanks for such detailed feedback! I'm not even close to full time and I'll rarely be first to review so I'm just trying to carve out a little less technical niche. I figure most people are like me and are probably already watching 10 reviews that are about the same. Coming up with enough sample shots that I like for these is definitely the most time consuming, but it's the most fun. And for the rentals it makes for a frantic challenge to dive in as deep and as fast as possible.
      Hopefully you'll love it as much as me! I'm hoping to make a longer term review for end of year like I did with the 24-105 but it has been my favorite since getting it.

    I forgot where I heard it, but the new RF 70-200mm f4 has about the same magnification as the older EF 70-200mm f4 II even though the MFD is closer on the newer lens. I believe this was because there's a good amount of focus breathing when focusing closer so you get a similar magnification. This would probably be far off from the magnification you could get on a dedicated macro lens - but I guess just depends the type of work you do.
    I have the first EF 70-200mm f4 IS with my EOS R, and still love the lens especially for the price. The RF version looks awesome and would love to use the same 77mm filters, but really can't justify upgrading for the price I'd be paying. Going to check out your comparison between the RF 70-200 f2.8 and f4 version, cheers!

    Subbed. Thanks for making this video. Just found your channel. I ended up selling my 24-105 because it wasn’t fast enough for family photography and weddings. Kids man kids. But yeah I rented the 70-200 2.8 for a wedding and honestly I felt like the 35mm 1.8 and 70-200 2.8 is the only Lenses you need for most photos. I ended up grabbing the 15-35mm instead since I needed something for videography too.

    • @sonicvboom
      @sonicvboom 3 года назад

      When you say the F4 24-105mm wasn't "fast" enough, are you referring to its low light performance in relation to the F-stop? Or are you talking the lens being not able to actually capture speed *speed* ? For me personally, I would have preferred having a *RF* combo of F1.8 50mm, F4 25-105mm, and F4 70-200mm for event/ wedding shoots. L-series glass are hella heavy and expensive. If I can save money and most of all, weigh less during my 12-14 hour gigs, I'd be a very happy man 😁😁. On the flip side, if money is no object, I'll admit I probably opt for the holy trinity of F2.8 lenses, with the 50mm and 85mm L-series primes on the side 😛😛

    I have viewed a few of your vids over the last year and finally just subscribed. I'm in between shoots and have to take off now, but I'm curious if you still have the f4 or went to the 2.8. My money maker is the 15-35 RF. My second RF lens is the 24-70 22.8 which is nice, but not used as much. Debating on 70-200 f4 or 2.8, but leaning towards F4 because I want light. Thanks!

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! I'm slowly working on a one year review, because I've had this comment a few times. Still f4, and still my favorite! But I think the context is important too - I'm not using this to make money at indoor events or weddings. It's more of a personal lens and even when I was still freelancing full-time, only half my income was from photography. I still use this occasionally indoors at the coffee shop I shoot at, I've used it for ice hockey if you saw that video. I would maybe swap for the f2.8 if I was doing paid portraiture/weddings/events often. I'm usually using it for hiking/landscape/candids/casual sports... and in all of those scenarios, spending on the 2.8 doesn't make that much sense because I'll happily bump the ISO and the look from 2.8 to 4 isn't THAT much different. With the money I saved, I added the Samyang 85mm f1.4. And 1.4 to 2.8 at 85 does start to look much different.
      So unless I get into more paid work and need to save some space in the bag and combine, I think the combo does better for me 😀

      @Dan Yosua good to hear. It's a hard decision because I bought the 24-70 and I don't use it as often as I wished. Again, I'm a full-time architectural photographer so 15-35 lives on my r6.

      @@JaredHoyman That was my worry about the 24-70 early on too, so that and price drove me to build around the 24-105. I think I may consolidate to the 15-35 one day... but I'm sitting on cameras/lenses for a bit.

I shot causally at some friends wedding, at night I needed faster for sure. F2.8 would have helped, but really I should have just rented an 85 f1.2.
      So a few instances for me where I wanted faster, but not nearly enough to spend the extra or go with the heavier lens (because I love using it on hikes). Unless I start shooting paid sports or events this is likely one I'm going to keep many years!

If you need the cleanest shots for paid gigs maybe look at the 2.8, otherwise even without IBIS this will be great and it's a lot easier to travel with. I've spent a week thinking about whether to move the 100mm or not. I think I will miss it occasionally but do plan on listing it for sale soon. I use the 35mm macro for most of the shooting that I need to get close up now, I have other weather sealed lenses now (whereas the 100mm used to be my only) and I've been steadily embracing minimalism as I cut down on possessions before moving in the next few months. If you are like me and were using it more for the reach over the macro... it's probably a fine move.

      Really depends on your definition of "macro". If it's not 1:1 then I would get a lens that zooms out as far as possible. Then you could pair extension tubes to do real macro shots. For me I would want a macro lens for macro shots but on the cheap side I use tubes.

    How is the dust sealing on this particular RF lens? I've heard photographers having a nightmare with Tamron and Sigma's current 24-70 due to dust getting sucked in to the lens due to poor sealing on the extending lens barrel. To your knowledge, does the RF F4 70-200mm L have a filter between the extending barrel and the main barrel to prevent dust from getting sucked into the lens? Or in your extensive use of the lens, have you detected any issues with dust [long term use]?

      I haven't had any issues yet with this and the 25-105 I've had longer. I'm not sure about a dust filter specifically, but there certainly is weather sealing. I usually wipe any visible water once inside, and then gently rest the lens (while extended) to air dry.

    Do you think the space/weight savings and other native lens benefits will be worth it for owners of EF70-200 F4 mark II who can adapt it to an R5 body?

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua  3 года назад

      This is a tough one - if I had the prior it would depend on how much I could sell it for. I've been doing some hiking in Colorado the past month and it's been nice to have the lighter stuff for longer hikes and especially stuff at elevation that I'm not used to. So if you use it a ton and don't have other pressing wants, then it could be a nice upgrade. Otherwise, if it were me I'd probably keep the EF II.

    Hey dan are you finding the 70 200 f4 useful.
    I spoke with you before about having a 35mm and 70 200
    Then there is the 24 105 to consider as my second purchase
    I wondered how your getting on seen as you have all those lenses?
    I just have the budget and interest to have one more. Either the 70 200 or the 24 105 to go with the 35mm 1.8
    Hope your well.

      Thanks for checking back in! I’m still loving the 70-200, would consider it my favorite lens. I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with either but… if you feel you often want wider than the 35, I would go with the more well rounded 24-105. Otherwise, the 70-200 is gonna be better for portraits and will offer some new shooting if you haven’t been shooting long lately

      @@DanYosua yes its such a hard call.
      I can see why the 70 200 is your favourite..
      Its a very good lense and focal length for many things.
      I think the 70 200 could be the one
      Is it used often enough though for you?.
      Whats your most used lense now dan?
      I mentioned before i have taken 8000 images in the last months all with the 35mm
      I would say i could get away with it as my main focal for sure.
      But yes i have wanted wider but its hard to say how many times..it wouldnt be that much id say..

    • @DanYosua

      I do use the 70-200 most right now. I often reach for that, the 24-105, the 100, then the 14 in that order. At least typically. And then for the 35 I film most of the video stuff with that + I will pair it with the RP when I'm trying to stay small.

    Will this lens do well with weddings and sports? I will use it with an r6.

      I just practiced shooting some hockey for the first time this weekend with this combo! I was sorta overwhelmed with how different this was, but I was happy for a first effort. Would have liked a f2.8 indoors, but f4 held up well with the R6. I cover this in my comparison video but for me personally, I’d need to be shooting lots more indoor sports or weddings to upgrade. Shot almost everything at 1/1000, f4, 3200-6400. Then brought up exposure and shadows a bit in LR with a noise reduction of 20. Pretty happy with how they look from a noise perspective. You can see some samples on my Instagram/Twitter. I’m shooting casually at a wedding for the first time next month… I imagine if you shoot a lot of those you may want the 2.8 but maybe others can chime in on their wedding experience with it.

      @@DanYosua actually let me take that back, I will be using the rf 70-200 f4L strictly for weddings only. Dancing shouldn’t be an issue for this lens right?

    • @DanYosua

      @@royaltykidstv I would think you could get away with 1/250 or less for slower dances maybe? So if you don't mind shooting those at 1600-6400 you should be ok.
