    Im thinking about getting the RF 18-150mm STM kit lens as general purpose lens, RF 50mm STM for portraits And lastly, 10-18mm STM for wide angles. Is it good enough for starters?

    I was SHOCKED by the dynamic range of the R8. I bought it primarily for video...but... for photography, push the shadows, drag the highlights down - NO problem. The file doesn't turn to mush like every other mirrorless I've used (Canon, Nikon). The way it handles noise - amazing as well.

      When it's not too cumbersome, it's nice to have it recording some b-roll that I can add to show the seconds surrounding and following any given photo. Mostly useful for making these videos, social content, or in rare cases, maybe to catch a moment you missed on the photo camera. I would use this more often these days, but the HERO9 is getting pretty old and it's finicky to use quickly on the fly.

    Your video has given me a great idea for travel. I have the EF 24-105 F4 L which I had on my 6D MKI, but found this all a bit heavy for travel where airline hand-luggage weights are an issue. Also at night time on holiday I'd try and stuff the camera into a man-bag so that walking around at night it was hidden until I need to use it. However this combo was difficult due to size and weight. Therefore I purchased the Canon RP which is a much smaller camera, and fits better into the man-bag, but still that lens is a chunk of weight, and, due to airline weight restrictions I've not been able to take my 10-24mm for dark sky photography. So now having seen your video (and personally tested the RF 24-105 STM) I think I can go with the RF 24-105 STM and pair it with the 16mm F2.8 lens you mentioned, and I'll still save about 200g in weight overall and now I get to carry a wide-angle that I've not been able to previously! Great news. Thanks for the information.

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua Месяц назад

      The 16 might be a great option for that wide and fast astro, I'm hoping to try it eventually. I just used the RF 28mm pancake in place of my Sigma 28mm on my most recent trip, because as you said, I was trying to cut down on flight weight/size.

      I don't have it anymore, but are there specific issues with image quality you're facing? I would make that upgrade if you're looking for a big jump in 4k video capability or continuous shooting speed, or AF reliability for moving objects in tricky scenes. Things like noise performance are probably pretty similar.

    Every review speaks the same - but a small battery is not a problem at all. The problem is not in the sensor or low light compared to the Sony A7c. Canon R8 is awesome until 6400ISO, not 12800ISO. Canon must think about some cheap, good version of the lens. Canon must give up the R8 type kit lens or RF15-30 F4.5-6.3 lens and must bring a cheap and good RF28-75mm F2.8 or 24-50mm F2.8L. Also a good cheap telephoto like Nikon 180-600 F5.6-6.3

    You’re absolutely right with your thoughts on the R8. A powerful photo tool with great video features at an incredible value in a small form factor. Even without the third dial and no joystick, being able to program the lens’ control ring and to use the back screen with my thumb to move my AF point are totally fine as workarounds. Having multiple small batteries to carry and one SD slot are the only things to be aware of with my R8 bodies. Most of my work is photo, so the video capabilities are just bonus for me if/when I may have to do video in the future. Really interesting pace and format in your video! Also, Nice touch with the music selections and how you edit with the rhythms of the melody in mind. Those editing choices are fun and very satisfying as a viewer & music educator 🙂 Love the video!

    I really enjoyed this vid. The whole thing, but the first half specifically was fun! My R7 with 100-400 is killing it for Banff wildlife, with the R8 now joined by the 24-105 F4 for the wider stuff. 24 and 35 1.8 lenses standing by for R8 video and for a niche role: R7 night street photography. I like the tighter framing but basically can't do without amazing IS. So R7 with 35 is better than R8 with 50 for low light street. Not sure I could handle the non stabilized 28mm with the R8... I'll stick with the 24-105. Battery was my #1 for hesitancy for R8... it hasn't mattered even once in practice. Glad to have the R8, surprised how much I continue to love the R7 and consider it the primary camera.

    You're one of the few guys I will feel good about my color grading and then watch a video and feel like I don't know anything at all like a noob. Shame. But yeah, the R8 Is excellent. I really loved using it while I had it. Only faults are the small battery, and those 1.8 Canon primes having the crappiest autofocus motors Canon could find, super laggy response to an otherwise excellent autofocus system. Id be all in on Canon right now if not for that. One more thing, the editing on this video is phenomenal. Bravo! Just wow, the graphics and the pacing, it's excellent, I know this took a ton of effort. Amazing work!

    • @DanYosua

      Hell of a first mirrorless. It's funny, I started with a t7i and nifty 50mm. I thought I would love photography, but wasn't sure, and that was a big purchase at the time. If I had known I'd fall in this deep 5 years ago, R8 would have been approachable yet with plenty to learn and maybe worth splurging for used. The RP has an interesting place now. For people that can find them on a killer deal, something like that would still have been treating me fine for a lot of my hiking shooting.

Lots of my purchase decision were heavily influenced by this channel! Anyway, going back to your vid, I couldn’t help but notice the different approach you went for here. Slow clap for the effort! Well done, Dan! Great video! I can appreciate when someone puts a lot in an edit even when others may not notice. I love my R6 II and have thought of the R8 as a C camera. I probably will either pick up the R5 II when it is released or the R5C since it has drastically dropped in price. I have nothing longer than 200mm...are you still liking the 100-400? How is the sharpness as a non L lens? BTW...had me laughing pretty hard when you zoomed in on the small item in your pocket.

      I was legit thinking of you when I was exporting this. I had just saved your latest vid to watch later, and thought some of this was up your alley haha. I'm really trying to drive my R6 into the ground for photos long-term, but if I was forced to consolidate what I have into one body, R6ii would definitely be it. I love the R8 as a top down with the c-stand/boom combo. I'll use my phone for that when I need a third, but prefer a dedicated camera. Still using and liking the 100-400mm, but feel a little unqualified to compare to the 100-500 or 200-800 as I still haven't used either. There is a bit of a learning curve to shooting long, conditions and light and distance to subject all seem to play a bigger role. When you get close to your subject it's great on the lower mp stuff, at least. Of note, depending on your use, 400mm still feels short. I'm cropping on almost every single shot, many times fairly heavy. Ideally the R7 is where you get this to shine, but when I tested that, the AF was more finicky and it's not quite as good at recovering in low light (which is usually where you live with the f8 at dusk).

    Love your videos, Dan. And how the channel has been evolving. I graduated from the RP to the R6 two years ago, never looked back. Really liked the small body, hated the small battery and viewfinder. I tried to like the 28 for the form factor, but it just did not spark joy for me as the 35 does.

      @DanYosua Месяц назад

      Thanks, appreciate you watching! The RP to R6 jump felt big for me, and was also very glad I did it. And good on your for trying both and finding what fits. I still prefer the 35mm for a talking head angle, but the 28mm was a better compromise for me elsewhere. I'll be interested to see if they make any more in the 28mm form factor.

      @@DanYosua Absolutely, there are just so many quality of life improvements in the R6 when coming from the RP. As for another pancake in the same housing, there is precedent for that with the 35/24 and 16/50 as well as the old EF 24/40 pair of pancakes, so hopefully we will see another tiny lens from Canon in the future, although what focal length such a lens would be is anyone's guess.

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua Месяц назад

      I don't find it bothers me much mainly because I only use it ~25% of the time. I'm not even sure why I don't use it more generally, I just prefer the screen flipped out I guess. When I am primarily in the EVF, with the 100-400 for example, I'm trusting both cameras very heavily to grab an eye, and they both do well. I think if I used one better than both, coming back would be tougher.

      @DanYosua Месяц назад

      Appreciate the comment, helps let me know I’m on the right track. Gut feel, what number would you have expected to see based on the content? Almost everything in the last 9 months my main a-roll is the R8. Especially the podcasts. R6 is my main photo body… and R8 was supposed to be a 6 month try and sell. But I got more photo work than I expected this year so I’ve kept it a bit longer. Next vid is mainly the R8 shots in NZ. I only had both together for a short time, but with the 70-200s, the distances between you, your subject, and your background (plus focal length) seem to be much more important for the look than the one stop. If you’re in tight spots and can’t control, maybe it helps a little. But I think the 2.8 is more useful for keeping the noise lower in dark environments and higher shutter speed shooting. For truly magical pop, 85 is something I look to for that.

      @@DanYosua I honestly was surprised that you didnt have AT LEAST upwards of 50k followers like the other photography youtubers i watch. I'm serious. I've no doubt it'll happen. The R8 is my main (or only) camera and i love it for being everything i want - since i am not shooting professionally. And that is also the reason why i am so "critical" about the f4 version. Since i am just starting out i feel like i want to be able to shoot everything without spending toooo much money on it. I love zooming in on everything when i am outside, but i also love (the idea of) taking very pleasant portraits. All with the wish/hope of getting better and ultimately professional. And i also love the idea that i dont have to carry around more than 1-2 lenses. So a telezoom that can do portraits would be kind of the perfect lense for me. I have the RF 50 1.8 (it too cheap not to have it), the 35 1.8 (thats the focal length that works best in my home studio setup but i dont like the wide photos) and the 24-105 F 4-7.1, which is a good lense for what it is - but the aperture.. Anyhow compression is the one thing i love the most in photos, since it makes the photos more "dense" and impactfull. Hence my interest in the 70-200. Maybe my "problem" is that i want something above 85 especially for everything besides portaits, but i am also not willing to spend another 2-3k on a great 85mm. Maybe the 85 F2 + the 70-200 F4 would be exactly what i need. Well at this point i'm just rambling :D Thank you for your reply and also thank you for the great videos you made because not only are they actually entertaining but also insightful AND feel to be a little more like your actual opinion than some of the other videos out there. No need to get back on this! I think this is just something i have to consider myself in the end. But please keep it up!

      P.S.: your way of talking is not only pleasant to listen to, but also makes me want to hear what's next. Which is making me watch your videos to the end. A very small "but": the sound is a little like scratchy compared to other youtubers. As in the mic or the processing isnt perfect with the s-sounds or the higher end. But this might just be me though!

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua Месяц назад

      Lol 50k, maybe if I ever manage more than one video a month 😅 Super helpful though, thanks for taking the time to expand! The "one lens" argument I do think is one of the stronger ones in favor of the f2.8 for people on the edge of enthusiast/part-time pro. If it really can do it all (most) for you then any weight and size hesitations start to fade away because it's the only thing in the bag. If you're able to spend a long weekend with one, you'll probably have a good idea either way. The audio feedback is good too, something I've wrestled with a bit. I need to practice more post and need to project more into the mic to begin with I think.

    You're my influence at buying the 24-105. And now that I struggle between 70-200 F4 and 2.8 (coz FOMO, lol!), I find that amongst the reviews that I watched so far, yours made the most sense for me. With my 24-105, I do struggle in low light situations, but I get around them by using high ISO and LR's denoise tool. And the results can be usable if not excellent. LR also now has Blur effect, which can make an image out of F4 like it was taken from a prime. I also had the chance of trying out both the 70-200 versions at a local Canon event, and 2.8 was significantly heavier and I think all your points considered, F4 is the better choice for me.

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua 2 месяца назад

      It's awesome that you had a chance to try both - it's what I did and it really helps to understand how much larger the f2.8 is. For some it won't be an issue at all, but for those on the fence, it's the fastest way to know for sure if you see yourself using it. And the tooling keeps getting better like you said! It's even easier to lean toward the F4 today in 2024 than it was in 2021.

    Im actually in the process of getting the f4 while owning the 2.8 My "problem" is that i do a lot of types of photography, the 2.8 is epic BUT... if you do hiking landscapes like me, and if you are like me and have more success with longer focal lenghs in those scenarios than wide... the weight is a consideration. So i even own a Fujifilm X-T30ii i bought to have a "throw in the bag" camera for when i wont take a camera with me, and even while having the x-t50 on preorder... its for a different scenario. The XT is for when i dont plan to bring my chunker R5 but want to have something photography in my non camera bag. While the R5 goes on hikes wheni know i go alone and go for the purpose of capturing my trip... and saving 3-400g on weight... for someone not super sporty... yea its a very good argument. Plus on landscapes i rarely utilize the 2.8. If id take one lense i rather go with the 24-105 f4 than the 24-70 f2.8 for example. Long ramble, im going to get the f4 along the 2.8 each has their place. But especially if you hike or travel, size and weight at similar sharpness just a bit less light intake is very well worth it.

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua 2 месяца назад

      Haha if you use em enough and can swing both, power to ya! Would be awesome to have the f2.8 tucked away for when you need it. I haven't had much time to learn about the xt50 yet, is that similar to the x100vi but interchangeable?

    • @Axonteer
      @Axonteer 2 месяца назад

      @@DanYosua I agree totally with you, if one doesnt really know that he needs the f2.8, the f4 is the much better option. These days i would recommend the 50 1.2 85 1.2 or 135 1.8 over the 70-200 2.8 IF someone wants"that" separation. The 2.8 is great but you need to know why you want the 2.8 (as i said, e.g. events or sports where you dont know the distance but light wont be good but getting the shot framed is more important than a low iso shot) The XT-50 is sort of the x100vi but with interchangable lenses. The xt30ii lays in the hand really good for its size (i was surprised! ) and the xt50 doesnt look like they changed much (not needed!). I had the chance to handle the Nikon Zfc from a friend and it never felt comfortable in my hand. If you just want a camera for pure shooting fun but some flexibility over the x100vi, get the 50... buy the 3 f2 primes and enjoy.
