Just wanted to make it clear that I suggest using these strategies as tools, not as replacement. If possible, they are worth doing. And if you want to help me create better videos for as little as a dollar a month, then consider becoming a member. It's greatly appreciated
no, ive seen videos of messmer, gaius, rellana, bayle, and others, but i dont really want to see all the bosses or areas. it simply looks incredible though
i think a reason why most people sleep on jumping to evade attacks is that the attacks dont LOOK jumpable i mean...look at the video, the flame of grodricks breath attack goes right through your head, the lightning of the dragonkin soldier goes meters up into the air and so on why would anyone expect an attack that visually goes very high to be jumpable?
This right here. I actually stopped playing Elden Ring relatively early on because I found the dodging mechanics frustrating, and silly me: I was looking at the actual visuals to try to decide what to do.
It's 100% this. You can jump those, but not Messmer's move that causes spears to shoot up out of the ground, or the Fallingstar Beasts' summoned rock stakes? They treated jump dodging like parrying where you're expected to be able tell by common sense what can and can't hypothetically be parried just based on the attack's visuals, but because so many shockwaves have some VFX with no hurtbox that goes 10 feet in the air, guessing which are which is a total crapshoot.
@@dhabu9017 Yeah thats pretty dumb like where would be look to evade? At the games code or what?. I think the devs did a stupid thing but not explaining these things properly or not doing em properly cuz most of us would have never even found without this video telling us...
"Make sure to explore first" Me exploring first: *unintentionally advance NPCs quests I didn't even know existed into phase 8/12 without ever even meeting them*
Ive seen a lot of Elden Ring videos DLC or not that suggest they have some incredible knowledge to be bequeathed even to expert players and then it turns out its just stuff like "bleed is broken" and "kill the mother dragon at the start of your game". This is the first video that humbly gave me more knowledge than all of those videos combined. Thank you, you absolute legend
@@relicthephilosopher1751 those older videos helped you out in the beginning but this one is showing tons of new stuff no one new after several 100 hour 😂
@@Atrak8 you could also just get on your horse and use heavy attack, it grinds the weapon across the ground for like 6 seconds. run counter to the ball and easy
people prefering rolling over jumping can be attributed to the fact that most of the attacks don't look like they would be able to clear the actual attack, like the tree demon worm things, took me awhile to figure out that you could dodge the tail swipe by jumping despite clipping into it mid swing
Still hasn't worked for me, only jumps that have worked have been to avoid a couple of floor smashes. Every other jump I've either still been clipped with damage or the enemy decided to do an overhead and I missed the cue.
Not to mention that those of us who already played Dark Souls or Demons Souls are already used to rolling to dodge attack and have to actively think about the prospect of jumping to avoid hits.
Rolling also has the property of moving you to a direction more than a jump would unless you get a running start, and in many cases that is quite useful
My favorite camera gimmick was in dark souls 3 where if you unlocked your camera against the nameless king and turned it away from the boss when he summons lighting bolts from the sky they would completely miss you instead of tracking you like they're supposed to
The hardest thing about jumping is unlearning to just roll. But after this vid I’m gonn try harder to jump over attacks that are low to the ground. Really great vid so far
You should still try to roll more than jumping just in case your read is off and they do an attack that can catch jumps. The idea is to roll into enemies the majority of the time because it'll plant you near the enemy giving you a chance for retaliation and sometimes you can even end up behind them for a free backstab. I feel like people don't discuss the direction of a roll and how it matters a LOT
@@DrClownPhD Yeah, positioning seems to be an underrated topic. For example, the horse knight in the beginning of the game whenever he used a charged attack, it's best to roll backward so when he stop charging past you, you are not far away from him and can follow it up with an attack.
Something I learned in my first playthrough was to attack frequently off of a jump. It usually adds good dps to most bosses without exposing you, but I may be biased as a dual strait sword user (your mileage may vary)
@@DrClownPhD Probably has a lot to do with Dark Souls players already being used to the positioning being very important and kind of take it for granted. A great example of this would be Vordt of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls 3, it introduces to new players very early on the value of positioning. Even if you do not know about it you'll be very likely to learn it from that fight since if you go for the cake you'll notice you won't have to dodge many attacks and keep slapping that cake with damage.
Once I learnt about bosses reading inputs and stopped spamming my buttons the game became much easier. Never roll or attack spam. The enemy is waiting to punish you.
I think the most important thing you said here is to “just have fun” That’s what Elden Ring is about. It’s about having fun. My recommendation is to just play the game with no limitations first. Do whatever the heck you want. Run a bleed build, use a mimic tear, big shield block everything. I do recommend the strategy of “getting good” because I personally find it to be really enjoyable- I mean just look at those sick dodges at the first half of the video, but you can do it on a second play through. What I’ve done is basically a character who just uses whatever I think is fun and then created alternative characters who function in a specific type of fantasy. The big armored Paladin focusing on strength and faith using big shields and guard counters with holy incantations and sacred or fire infused weapons (fire scales strength/faith and Paladins in World of Warcraft do have some fire related abilities- but I limited this to weapon infusions only) I made an assassin build utilizing daggers and a twin blade for one play through and Jesus that was difficult in some places. Bleed builds are OP, but not if youre effectively fighting with your fists… there were some boss attacks I couldn’t even punish because they have a pushbox forcing me to stand a certain distance away but their actual hurtbox to hit them was too far still for a dagger to hit LOL But I had fun overcoming the challenges that I set in place for myself AFTER playing the game the first time.
That's exactly the issue with this game, it's a jrpg, you're supposed to be able to craft whatever character you want. You should be able to use daggers and bleed the whole playthrough, they gave you everything to fulfill that fantasy. Then they rip it away by giving bosses huge resistances and bad pushboxes (i did a fist weapons run, trust me, i feel your pain). I had over 1k hours in ds3 and never had this issue doing themed runs, it sucks that elden ring has all of this variety but punishes you for trying to use it in an immersive way
I've been using quickstep lately and it feels super OP. I can just spam it until the boss gives an opening even a blind man can take advantage of. It gives so many immunity frames, or at least it feels like it IDK I always thought it was just a weak uninteresting defensive ash, but I kill bosses so much faster because I'm always hitting them, lol Especially since I'm using raptor's claws and I don't think they get any decent attack ashes anyways, although now I'm using quickstep on my katanas and shit too hehe. Try it, it makes the game so easy
It's quite difficult to "have fun" when the developers keep screwing up delivery attempts at their own formula, don't optimize their game and actively avoid giving the player crucial information.
The reason you can't parry that pumpkin head's weapon attack is probably because it's a flail and flails can't be parried. Maybe the one with a big mace can be parried?

(spell or ash idk) 4: Defensive kick tactic: no skill shield + empty hand or kick (i don't remember what this tip is supposed to mean)
This is definitely eye opening. I have a bad habit in games being narrow-minded, not deviating from what I know and flooring metas. I definitely need to experiment more before and during the dlc
Same. Sometimes, I think that having played through DS 1-3 and Bloodborne is a bad thing. I'm so stuck in my ways with bad habits. Jumping never ever even registers to me as a defensive option 😒
After restarting many times, I finally came back to the game and finished it last week. With a ton of exploration done. I didn't rush through it. I did mainly stick to one playstyle, but experimented a little here and there. I also watched a lot of videos of different play styles using different weapons and tools. All this makes me have even MORE appreciation for this game. There are so many things to use in the game. What I may think is useless, I see someone else use it to great affect. The game is designed so masterfully that it allows people to be creative. That is NOT easy to do. It is much easier to create a game that forces the player to play a certain way. Only the most extreme gamers will break the game.
@@raimee81 I'd rather the sekiro approach where i just have 1 weapon and the 1 main way of dealing with attacks so i can just focus on raw mechanics instead of "if you use x thing on y enemy it just dies instantly"
@@thedoomslayer5863 well it's always up to personal taste. Sekiro battles are a test of mechanical skill. Elden Ring battles are war. Every boss and miniboss cheats in some way so you gotta cheat back. Personally I really love finding out weaknesses of enemies and exploiting them. I switch out my talismans super often, switch out spells, weapons, etc. This dlc is amazing so far.
At 7:12 the reason you can parry his fist but not his weapon is that flails can’t be parried as an innate weapon quality. This is true for the player too! So if you’re having trouble with, for instance, Moongrum, you can use a flail to avoid getting 1 shot riposted. The other weapons that have this property are whips, colossal swords or colossal weapons only when held with 2 hands, or any jump attack. See you in the dlc Tarnished!
You cannot parry the other pumpkin head that has a mace. I guess it could be cuz of the fact they cannot see so the parry doesn't happen? But then again you can parry the headless knights.
@@squalltheonly Why would one's lack of sight impede what another being can do to you? The mace variant doesn't drop the mace, so, based on OP's statement, I can only guess that internally the mace is classified as a colossal weapon that the enemy does wield with two hands.
I miss consumables so often because i dont like the process of selecting and using them. Maybe if i could play with MNK and hotkey them but the whole cycling and using them is just annoying and tedious so i dont end up doing it.
@@vgamedude12 Don't forget you can hotkey up to 4 consumables that don't require scrolling in the top right of the main start menu, above your emotes. These get bound to holding Y/triangle and pressing a direction on the D pad. You also get two quick menu slots that don't have hotkeys (I use these for the belt lantern and rune arcs)
My tip: if you die and drop a lot of runes that you are anxious to get back, put on a sacrificial twig - if you die on the run-back your bloodstain won’t disappear Edit: As MANY people have pointed out, there is a tear for the physick that can do the same thing, saving you twigs in case you needed them for something else
@@ICr4zyI There a few good ways, the best way is to first reach Mohg’s palace so you can get a bird to keep falling off a cliff. You can get there by doing Varre’s quest line after defeating Godrick the Grafted.
Always takes me 3-5 tries standing at 1 point trying to swing a zweihander at the right time 🤣 later on I used Hoarfrost Stomp or Hoarah Loux’ Earthshaker (?). But this is so much easier
You can also equip a spear and be on the horse, then hold heavy attack to couch the lance while standing in its path and the scarab will run into it and die.
You forgot to mention that you can jump over Mohg's flying slash attack AND get a jump attack in while doing so. You can also jump the double spin slash that watchdogs do with a well timed jump (also getting a jump attack in)
Less forgot more like "you can jump over like half the attacks in the game". I bet if someone made a video compiling all the attacks u can jump it would be at least an hour or two long.
I thought I knew all the attacks I could jump since I'm dual wielding curved swords, arguably best jump attack in the game. Still I had no idea you could jump over Godrick's flamethrower attack
You should try double twinblades. Very similar to curved swords and do stupid damage... Unless they nerfed it I didnt follow the updates for a while and its been a few months since i tried em.
Have I missed it, or have you forgot to talk about how the (i'm not kidding) *majority* of people don't use shields properly? The massive advantage of shields is, that you are invulnerable to most attacks in the game, while you hold the block button, at 0 cost. The only thing holding the block button does is to slow down your stamina, which means it is truly free while at full stamina. Now that alone isn't "super overpowered", yes. But what people seemingly *always* fail to notice,... is that you can just simply dodge roll out of block. With virtually no delay. Which means: If you only dodge roll: You have to be careful not to dodge too late, which significantly increases the risk of dodging **too early**. Especially in Elden Ring, where opponents love to delay their attacks, you often see people rolling around multiple times before the opponent (i.e Margit) finally strikes. But if you use shield + dodgeroll: If you fail to roll in time, what happens? Guess what, you simply block the attack and negate it. It will cost a lot of stamina potentially, but your HP is untouched (or dmg heavily reduced, if the attack was infused with magic/elements) This ultimately means that you don't need to be scared at all about being too late with your dodge roll, and you can truly focus on dodging on reaction to the actual attack, instead of predicting when it will land on anticipation. This actually trains your brain to be much more comfortable with dodging on sight, rather than on anticiption, and eventually you can even stop using a shield in many situations, being more skilled then you'd ever have been without using a shield.
Jumping is fantastic, however it's biggest issues is that it's very hard to know what attacks can be jumped over (unless it's very obvious like Elden Beasts AoE Ring Pulse), and which can't. Rolling is a far safer option in most cases when you don't yet know a bosses attacks fully, however once do, the combination of rolling and jumping makes you practically invincible.
Hmm is it kind of like part of the experience/knowledge check? I.e. if you know an attack is low enough to be jumpable, you use a 60 frame hitbox displacement jump. Then if it's an attack that you know is not jumpable, you use a 26 frame full roll. Although initially finding out which are jumpable might take some hurty learnin?
In a similar fashion, you technically can't know which attacks can be rolled theough either. While it probably has a higher success rate, both evasion methods don't work for everything 🤔
The game gives you unlimited tries, so just put on the best damage negation buffs and experiment for yourself. Seeing what works when is a huge part of the fun too
There's also the fact that a lot of attacks you can/should jump over don't make logical sense. Such as every overhead attack shown. Why in the world would you ever think to jump INTO an attack hitting you from above to dodge it?
Apart from being a huge spoiler fest for new players tho. I have over 250h and learned multiple new things through this video, there's amazing info in this, but I wouldn't recommend it to a friend who hasn't played through the entire game yet.
@@skinnytimmy1 If we recommend it as a starter guide then yes, a beginner can still have things spoiled if they play the game later than other people. For everyone else its obviously not a problem.
Easiest to notice with enemies that have animations for being broken free from like rune bears. Of course not all grabs can be escaped from, but it's always worth trying!
You can dodge the first part of waterfowl dance up close by jumping if you run and then jump as soon as the flurry appears Saved me from many deaths and sometimes didn't take damage at all even though I was right in front of the attack although it's not very consistent and you can still get hit midair
Turns you get i-frames from the chest down when you initiate the jump all through to landing. So you're essentially invulnerable for longer than rolling if you are in an ideal position. Rolling gives you i-frames, jumping gives you 2 i-seconds lol.
Holy shit, how did you pack so much useful hints into such a short video? I've finished tghe game around thirty times by now and I still learned quite a lot!
I got downvoted to oblivion for telling ppl on Reddit who are complaining about the dlc these exact tips. I’m convinced ppl are still playing this game like it’s DS3 and don’t understand the mechanics at all
I confirm to you that even after playing through ds2, ds3, bloodborne and elden ring i don't understand the mechanics of this game unfortunately... So many area of effect attacks...
It's totally ok, elden ring is like a weird conglomeration of sekiro and dark souls in a lot of ways. One of the best and most central pieces of advice I've seen about mindset in regard to this game vs the souls series is that bosses do not provide openings in the same way. A lot of the field bosses and simpler bosses will leave opportunities to get some swings in but the idea ER is built around is attacking through the bosses attacks. You need to play around with what attacks you can throw that'll let you swing under certain boss attacks and which attacks they throw with long wind-ups. This is why Margit is placed where he is. His entire flight is designed to teach you to punish bosses big "get fucked" attacks.
You know what’s funny… I stumbled a staggered animation of one of the giants when I attempted to jump attack its arm swings… to this point. Realizing that whenever it lowers its body to swing its sword or arms. Jump attack at its head caused it to stagger immediately. Huh…
I've played about 2 hours of Eldin ring so far. watched a guide. I don't think people under stand how the first 5sec of this video is so true... apparently I can heal with a flask. I don't know if I have one. what button to press. how to unlock it if I need to. How to equip it. How to swap between it and other equipped items. The one 30min video I have watched on Eldin Ring that went through stuff was all PlayStation instructions.
@@SuperLifestream You'd be surprised as well at how many mini bosses you can beat by simply staying on your horse... I beat the tree sentinel by simply riding around on torrent, going up close, slashing and simply riding away whenever he does his attacks, did the same for majority of the dragons and giants as well.... Horse fighting is awkward yes, but once you can master it, it's very useful
Something to keep in mind for guard counters is to read enemy movements and always try to block the very last attack/attack which have a slow follow-up. You can pretty reliably punish a lot of Malenia attacks. It also does a heck ton of posture damage. Even normal longsword can stance break her in a couple of hits
something to add to that jumping bit, consider the shortbow. you can fire the shortbow while jumping which if you are gonna be jumping a large series of attacks makes it a great tool for adding additional damage as well as preventing poise from resetting, the plethora of arrow types you can craft can even make applying statuses like bleed become fairly trivial if all of your dodging now includes bleed/poison/rot application in the process.
Yo! I know what you mean, and yours can be the exact same! It's called "saturation" and can be found in the settings tab. It's default value is 5, so crank it up to a maximum value of 10. Enjoy your ass-kicking and adventuring in a vibrant environment!
One more tip. You can 2-hand a shield and it will vastly reduce stamina consumption. With great shield in 2-nd stance you can easily negate Malenia's flurry, for example
On the topic of guard counters: They deal a lot of guard damage and can lead to tons of guard breaks if used correctly. You can block with two handed weapons. Some colossal weapons even have better stability rating than medium shields. With lower stability weapons you will take a lot of stamina damage from blocking high damage attacks making it useless for bosses but for low damage attacks like a trash mob sword swing it's perfectly viable. With the deflection tear from the very first burning giant thing in the dlc you can mitigate health and stamina loss from blocking when you tap block as the attack hits by so much that it makes two handed weapon guard counters viable on bosses.
The thumbnail and title somehow scared me away from the video but after days of avoiding and seeing this video in my recommendations i finally gave in and its full of good advice thank you
I really loved this video. You should do a more comprehensive video on weaknesses, crafting, ash of wars and other stuff that people don’t know. I’d watch em all.
Dude, that video was amazing! I've seen few others mentioning interesting uses of some items, but this was the most condensed, helpful and innovative. I'm going to train the jump dodges right away!
This advice sounds practically prophetic after playing the DLC. Definitely going to expirement more going forward. Also, the editing in this is so tight. So much good information, so easy to follow, such a short amount of time compared to other Elden Ring videos.
Thanks for changing my perspective on this game: prior to realising how many mechanics i overlooked there was an ironic complaint on my part about how simple the combat felt, how useless the jump felt and how it seemed to take several steps back in regards to the series evolution. Your video made me realize that Elden Ring was exactly the type of Souls game i was looking for, i just played it like any other. I can't stress enough how rewarding it is to constantly cycle through many options in my build, trying to fit some type of elemental damage in an INT build for example, and crafting any consumable that can enhance the experience. I now approach each encounter as a puzzle of sort and beforehand prepare to not be optimal (i don't like pedantic min/maxxing) but to have fun. The base game doesn't require you to adapt to every encounter, aside from bosses nothing will really challenge you to that point, but i want to say it's so refreshing playing a souls game as an rpg and not a full on action game for once
@@GaijinEncarmine Also, you can't use magic, you can't use incantations, you can't spirit summon, and you can't use any build that's "meta", otherwise you're playing the game wrong and your playthrough is invalid. And no, I'm not adding /s, because there are lots of people in the From Soft fanbase who say that one hundred percent seriously.
I tried jumping over the attacks that looked low enough when the game first came out. When it worked it felt amazing, but it felt far too inconsistent which attacks were avoidable and which werent. The animations for this can be incredibly misleading, so i eventually just stopped jumping with most melee attacks and only jumped over obvious aoe attacks and sweeps.
@@piotr78 Yeah though at least there they give you a cue and it's always a sweeping attack. You sorta have to guess which attacks are jumpable in elden ring though you can get more mileage in ER
theres a better stealth cheese for the leyndell draconic sentinel. poison mist doesnt draw his attention. you can just sit behind him while he slowly dies without ever noticing a thing
when the dlc came out had to play the game from the beginning the first thing I did was fight the tree sentinel Strafing and jumping and rolling from to time Made me defeat him faster then I used to do just by rolling especially when I don't panic roll as often
@@lag00n54 As it turns out, just walking towards his shield side rudely interrupts a lot of his longer halberd attack chains :D I'd really recommend that for anyone not too comfortable with the roll timings.
@@ratman1125 sprinting around the boss helps as well and fighting on horse back, I've beaten most mini bosses on horse back, especially if they're out in the open fields or in large areas thar allow you to use Torrent
Jumping the fire furnace enemies attacks is so fun. Its crazy because in Sekiro the jump was hard even when you were more mobile but jumping in this game and especially dlc is reactive and works. Even final bosses pull attack can be jumped safe.
10/10 video ngl. It just shows the full gameplay possibilities of the game that can allow you to have fun. Recently i've played through the game in preparation for the dlc just using bloodhound's fang, buff from the commander's standard and a flask with agility and strength tears and oh boy, bosses were already melting from the damage, it ain't even the best setup you can make and it already made me op.
I've been saying this since elden ring came out From soft likes to punish conditioned responses that's why there's so many prime locations tour brain goes there's gotta be an item back here but it's an empty hallway I noticed lots of early game enemy's dip back out of straight sword range and make r1 spam useless and alot of enemy's have a lunge strike mechanic when u roll that's the exact distance to grab a roll spamer
Correction: You don't even need to finish Bernard's quest to get it-just kill him in the shack at stormveil before joining volcano manor and after joining them give the bell bearing to twin maiden husk at roundtable
Bro I watched this video and I was like this guy sounds real familiar and then I just realized that I used to watch your terraria calamity mod videos and now you make elden ring videos, my two favorite games of all time. Pretty cool
Recently finished my second run where I used parry when I could but, most importantly, every advantage I can get my hands on, mostly ingnored summons but lots of the tips you showed are really helpful in practice, jars, perfumes, some incantations, other craftables; and after watching this video I see I can squeeze even more from the game, that's amazing
I mean, how were you supposed to know this? Look at 2:04, every visual indication tells you, you messed up, yet it was the right course of action. I would've tried jumping a lot more if i knew that hitboxes were that scuffed.
@@PSYMEDIC I mean to be fair rolling also looks like you are just running into attacks sometimes. The only reason jump dodges feel strange at first is because they are a new mechanic.
@@PSYMEDIC And then on the other hand, Rykard's earthquake attack & Radagon's triple slam look like textbook jump-able attacks but... they just aren't.
I never knew that the roll had i-frames when I played Dark Souls 1. I beat the whole game not realizing rolling made you briefly invincible. I used shields a lot and tried my best to simply avoid attacks. I still used the roll to get out of the way, but I didn't know about the invincibility, so I thought there were a lot of attacks that were just unavoidable and needed to be baited and healed around. I actually hate the concept of i-frames. It just bounces off of my brain to think you can become invincible for no reason, so I prefer playstyles that don't use it much.
@@Joey-up5dy I just find i-frames immersion breaking and they go against my instincts. It comes from being really into Jedi Academy as the first game I put serious effort into mastering the fighting in. In those games, a rolling character is super vulnerable because blocking is automatic as long as your weapon is ready and between you and your opponent. Also, the damage is semi-realistic where a blade passing through your entire body undefended will usually kill you. @@Joey-up5dy well, that's what I don't like about this combat system. Jedi Academy was like an actual martial arts fight, where you paid attention to the enemy blade. You lost if their blade touched you and you won if yours touched them. Very different than the Souls-like style.
Great video, I think the title doesn't portray how useful this video is. I just got an undergrad degree in Elden Ring from watching this. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this video. Thanks.
A lot of helpful tips, and I still see people telling others how they should play the game based on what works for them personally. Play how you want, just have fun while finding what works best for you, like the man said.
"Who do you think is tankier...?" Neither they're both going to get instagibbed. 30 vigor naked? Dies in one or two hits. 60 vigor full Havels (or whatever is the Elden Ring equivalent of Havels)? Dies in one or two hits.
Great video. So many mechanics I don't use. One thing I can confirm, after getting through 90% of the DLC - a Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman + a +3 of other damage-type resist talisman feels mandatory for the DLC and I've been able to get through so many of the bosses because I'm so tanky.
For the original dark souls, I find it to be too dark in many portions of the game. I appreciate the artistic point of this darkness, but my eyes aren't the best. So I use a reshade to brighten the whole game.
Awesome tips, some of which I didn't know after hundreds of hours in the game. The octopus tentacles and glintstone knives killing invisible scarabs are awesome and smart. Enemy mechanics are so detailed in this game, and it's like the developers have you solving problems by using different items and weapons, rather than just through brute force. Stick lightning on dual curved swords for the large metal enemies that grab you and pull you inside them -- a jumping L1 and another hit after that will stun them.
Wow it's... it's almost like you're supposed to use all of these mechanics in conjunction with each other instead of arbitrary self challenges. "Can't use magic, can't use summons, can't use certain weapons, can't use ranged attack, can't use potions..." My brother in christ, they are an integral part of the game. If you don't use them, you're literally just doing a challenge run, and if you can't beat your own challenges the you're trash lmao.
There’s no way you’re “supposed” to play. Literally everything in this game is viable and it’s like that for a reason. You’re working yourself up for nothing.
@@jacob5061 nah you're given the tools, fucking use them instead of complaining about bleed builds and summons. Y'all annoying as fuck, go back to darksouls.
I really love executing these existing mechanics that took me a while to figure out once I found out. Like for instance, some Ashes of War, Incants or Spells cover some kind of distance I really, really enjoyed using those to dodge enemy attacks. Also perfectly timing Vow of the Indomitable right before some enemy attacks felt really satisfying. And as for jumping, it takes time to figure out considering that some enemy attack animations made it seem that they are not jumpable but in reality they are. Once I figure out that we can jump on attacks such as Maliketh’s sweeps or Malenia’s thrust or even Godfrey’s uppercut axe swings, I would enjoy their fights a lot more than I used to.
This video is such a shotgun blast of useful information, I feel like I could watch it a hundred times and still forget stuff, great non the less, I apprciate you not wasting peoples time!
Just wanted to make it clear that I suggest using these strategies as tools, not as replacement. If possible, they are worth doing.

no, ive seen videos of messmer, gaius, rellana, bayle, and others, but i dont really want to see all the bosses or areas. it simply looks incredible though
i think a reason why most people sleep on jumping to evade attacks is that the attacks dont LOOK jumpable
i mean...look at the video, the flame of grodricks breath attack goes right through your head, the lightning of the dragonkin soldier goes meters up into the air and so on
why would anyone expect an attack that visually goes very high to be jumpable?
This right here. I actually stopped playing Elden Ring relatively early on because I found the dodging mechanics frustrating, and silly me: I was looking at the actual visuals to try to decide what to do.
which is kind of shitty if you think about it but whatever
It's 100% this. You can jump those, but not Messmer's move that causes spears to shoot up out of the ground, or the Fallingstar Beasts' summoned rock stakes? They treated jump dodging like parrying where you're expected to be able tell by common sense what can and can't hypothetically be parried just based on the attack's visuals, but because so many shockwaves have some VFX with no hurtbox that goes 10 feet in the air, guessing which are which is a total crapshoot.

👍 do jumping DLC bosses! Please.
people prefering rolling over jumping can be attributed to the fact that most of the attacks don't look like they would be able to clear the actual attack, like the tree demon worm things, took me awhile to figure out that you could dodge the tail swipe by jumping despite clipping into it mid swing

I do both and once you get used to jumping it’s not bad.

I think the most important thing you said here is to “just have fun”
That’s what Elden Ring is about.
The big armored Paladin focusing on strength and faith using big shields and guard counters with holy incantations and sacred or fire infused weapons (fire scales strength/faith and Paladins in World of Warcraft do have some fire related abilities- but I limited this to weapon infusions only)
I made an assassin build utilizing daggers and a twin blade for one play through and Jesus that was difficult in some places. Bleed builds are OP, but not if youre effectively fighting with your fists… there were some boss attacks I couldn’t even punish because they have a pushbox forcing me to stand a certain distance away but their actual hurtbox to hit them was too far still for a dagger to hit LOL
But I had fun overcoming the challenges that I set in place for myself AFTER playing the game the first time.
It gives so many immunity frames, or at least it feels like it
IDK I always thought it was just a weak uninteresting defensive ash, but I kill bosses so much faster because I'm always hitting them, lol
Especially since I'm using raptor's claws and I don't think they get any decent attack ashes anyways, although now I'm using quickstep on my katanas and shit too hehe.

After restarting many times, I finally came back to the game and finished it last week. With a ton of exploration done. I didn't rush through it. At 7:12 the reason you can parry his fist but not his weapon is that flails can’t be parried as an innate weapon quality. This is true for the player too! So if you’re having trouble with, for instance, Moongrum, you can use a flail to avoid getting 1 shot riposted.

This is super helpful. It’s also tremendously disappointing that the visuals don’t matter at all.
Which means:
If you only dodge roll: You have to be careful not to dodge too late, which significantly increases the risk of dodging **too early**. Especially in Elden Ring, where opponents love to delay their attacks, you often see people rolling around multiple times before the opponent (i.e Margit) finally strikes.
But if you use shield + dodgeroll:
If you fail to roll in time, what happens? Guess what, you simply block the attack and negate it. It will cost a lot of stamina potentially, but your HP is untouched (or dmg heavily reduced, if the attack was infused with magic/elements)
This ultimately means that you don't need to be scared at all about being too late with your dodge roll, and you can truly focus on dodging on reaction to the actual attack, instead of predicting when it will land on anticipation.
This actually trains your brain to be much more comfortable with dodging on sight, rather than on anticiption, and eventually you can even stop using a shield in many situations, being more skilled then you'd ever have been without using a shield.
Whenever I use a shield, I just get stun locked to hell 😂
Shields are good but blocking uses a lot of stamina

Yeah redditors are all braindead.
It's reddit, what did you expect? Talking sense into those people there is like talking to a wall.
Playing this game like DS three is the only way to play it.
I learned a few things from this, thank you for sharing. The jump tip is epic
You know what’s funny… I stumbled a staggered animation of one of the giants when I attempted to jump attack its arm swings… to this point. Realizing that whenever it lowers its body to swing its sword or arms. Jump attack at its head caused it to stagger immediately. Huh…
It’s ridiculous how good this video is. So much good info.
Thanks for the tips and congrats on the video!
How in the hell does your footage look so damn CLEAN? Is it just me or do the colors not look way more vibrant?
Yo!
I know what you mean, and yours can be the exact same!
It's called "saturation" and can be found in the settings tab.

One more tip.
You can 2-hand a shield and it will vastly reduce stamina consumption.
With great shield in 2-nd stance you can easily negate Malenia's flurry, for example
@@TheBeatBen why do that when you can just run around it or just roll it?
Malenia is the worst person to use a shield on because she regens health
On the topic of guard counters:
They deal a lot of guard damage and can lead to tons of guard breaks if used correctly.
Honestly pulling out a colossal sword with defelction has been my 'get out of jail free card' in the DLC.
Amazing video, didn’t know a quarter of these things - and I’ve watched as many hours of RUclips-tips as I’ve played. Well done!
My glorious king is back. Oh joyous day
This is quite possibly one of the most informative ER vids I've watched over the years!! New Sub, thanks!!
Great video, i actually learned some things i did not know, and love that the best advice you gave was to just use everything and have fun.
WHAT??? these would make such a cool playstyle, you're like a weaponmaster that is constantly adapting to the task at hand, that's so cool
There are hundreds of weapons and a lot of infinitely available upgrade materials. Why would you ever limit yourself to one weapon? Go have fun!
Crystal darts work on imps and golems, too!
Incredible guide! I learned a lot, and I'm a little less worried about the DLC now.
9:54 yoo wtf is that stamina bar??!! 😮
Also the quick tips section actually blew my mind so many hidden interactions in ER
Nah trust he just got a good gaming chair
People are sleeping on the power of guard counter. It's even viable to block with your weapon.
@@LouSaydus Remember to use the shield talisman for those weapons. Also the DLC has a perfect block crystal tear that is super fun.
*blocks malikeths attack*
*uses guard counter*
*maliketh flies into the air before the guard counter hits*
This is why we sleep on guard counters
@@skinnytimmy1 Your comment would make much more sense if most enemies in the game were Maliketh.
Noooooo! You aren't REALLY playing the game unless you spend hours learning frame-perfect rolls on every boss! /s

@@Mecz2 Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella.
The bit about chemtrails was hilarious. Thanks for the useful AND entertaining videos!
Man, I gotta practice jumping more. I'm so tuned to rolling that it feels like I have to turn on a second brain to hit the jump button.
I had so much difficulty jumping in sekiro..😅
@@piotr78 Yeah though at least there they give you a cue and it's always a sweeping attack. You sorta have to guess which attacks are jumpable in elden ring though you can get more mileage in ER
theres a better stealth cheese for the leyndell draconic sentinel. poison mist doesnt draw his attention. you can just sit behind him while he slowly dies without ever noticing a thing
Crucible knights are more fun to parry, but I'm definitely going to start jumping on those grab attacks.
"bring a lantern" Pffttt... LOL awesome video bro, beyond hyped !
The strafing tip is something I've only recently started doing on my own. It helps SO much in the Mohg fight, for example
when the dlc came out
had to play the game from the beginning the first thing I did was fight the tree sentinel
Strafing and jumping and rolling from to time Made me defeat him faster then
I used to do just by rolling
especially when I don't panic roll as often
These are some great tips!
I've been saying this since elden ring came out
From soft likes to punish conditioned responses that's why there's so many prime locations tour brain goes there's gotta be an item back here but it's an empty hallway
I noticed lots of early game enemy's dip back out of straight sword range and make r1 spam useless and alot of enemy's have a lunge strike mechanic when u roll that's the exact distance to grab a roll spamer
8:00 Sorry but best i can do is 4 offensive talismans and raging because i get 1 shot.

Miyazaki wanted to troll the old bois from Souls series by making roll less effective compared to jump.

Not true at all
I never knew that the roll had i-frames when I played Dark Souls 1.
So I had years of negative reinforcement telling me to never try rolling THROUGH an attack.
Thanks.
So bro is basically telling me I've been playing Elden Ring like I play Bayonetta when I should be playing like it's Devil May Cry. Thank you sir.
Going to be real hard to get out of the habit of rolling after playing all the souls games and never being a parry god.
A lot of helpful tips, and I still see people telling others how they should play the game based on what works for them personally. Play how you want, just have fun while finding what works best for you, like the man said.
What armor is that???
He mentioned it in some Video, if i remember correctly this is out of unused game files, its not avaiable naturally in the game
"Who do you think is tankier...?"
Neither they're both going to get instagibbed.
30 vigor naked? Dies in one or two hits. 60 vigor full Havels (or whatever is the Elden Ring equivalent of Havels)? Dies in one or two hits.
Yea, it really doesn't matter because if you get hit once, you're gonna stagger and keep getting hit until you die or the boss decides to be nice 😂
I like to think that Malenia misses the grab when you jump because instead of grabbing your neck she instead accidentally grabbed your balls😂
2:25 "meow"
What???
Never got more info in such a straightforward manner in 10 minutes. Subbed!
I gotta say, its pretty bad design to be able to jump over AoEs that are cleary bigger than your Charactermodel itself
some AoEs in the DLC break this general idea tool, like Rellana’s. you HAVE to her.
5:50 whattheactualfuck is this long bar? Is this a new vigor stat from the dlc?
they just have a ridiculous amount of stamina lol

Reshade presets always make games look like what a 15 year old's version of "good graphics" would be.
It's like putting a snapchat filter on the Mona Lisa
For the original dark souls, I find it to be too dark in many portions of the game.
I appreciate the artistic point of this darkness, but my eyes aren't the best. So I use a reshade to brighten the whole game.
@@GiordanoBruno42 Ok but he didn't increase the brightness, he just amped up the saturation.

Game did a terrible job of teaching its players pretty much anything. Casuals just like it for the spectacle and hard players see the flaws.
Typical FromSoft.
Wow it's... it's almost like you're supposed to use all of these mechanics in conjunction with each other instead of arbitrary self challenges.
"Can't use magic, can't use summons, can't use certain weapons, can't use ranged attack, can't use potions..."
My brother in christ, they are an integral part of the game.
