It's a very funny show IMO and definitely worth checking out if you're ever looking for something to watch. *EDIT: So in a prior version of this comment I incorrectly speculated that a reason the show struggled in ratings was it had to compete with some of the more popular shows of the 90s such as Seinfeld, Friends, etc. But a commenter kindly pointed out that it was actually on the same network as those shows and the reasons for it struggling were mostly internal conflicts with executives.* I think if it had the benefit of being around in today's world where streaming views are more important than TV ratings it would've become more well known. -Phil returned twice to SNL as a host in 1996. -Some noteworthy films he starred in around this time included the Arnold Schwarzenegger led comedy Jingle All the Way, Sgt Bilko(which was a critical and commercial failure), and the Sinbad comedy Houseguest. When Phil joined the cast of Newsradio it did not include a young Joe Rogan. Rogan was cast after the pilot was filmed. Also Newsradio was never "up against" Seinfeld, Frasier or Friends, as all of those shows were on NBC. The creators of Newsradio were always clashing with the network execs and the network is the one that basically f**ked the show.
Poor Phil...certainly didn't deserve to go that way. And the poor children didn't deserve to lose their parents that way. This was a complete and senseless tragedy.

As a fan of Phil Hartman, I saw him in New York months prior at the airport what a delight to tell him I appreciated his work on SNL. When I heard what she did I was glad shot herself.
Any "reason" is only speculation (at this point). We (as clear thinking, not on cocaine or alcohol people who haven't murdered our spouse) people think "Well yeah she killed herself to avoid responsibility." BUT she may have been feeling guilt along with horror, sadness, panic, ... speculation.
Didn't realize you were there ( or in her head). Between Zoloft, coming down off a cocaine rush for the last 10 hours add in alcohol another depressant you become VERY aware what your actions are now and THERE IS NO GOOD ALTERNATIVE to this as the brain presents. So it's a painful, guilt ridden and desperate moment and having the simple solution to end the nightmare And pain in your hand - it's a very easy decision

drugs + alcohol + morbid jealousy = recipe for murder. Please if you are involved with someone like that run and never look back even leave the country if need be or you may die before your time. Better to be alone than dead. Poor Phil, he thought things would get better went to bed. Never go to sleep with a psycho roaming about in the house.
Drugs + alcohol + morbid jealousy is rampant in Hollywood and is a common reason for DIVORCE. It ended in murder because she was psychotic and untreated.
None of us were there in their home to even know what REALLY happened. Mental illness is not a reason to hate someone. And, this video even alludes to Phil's infidelity in previous marriage. If that was part of his last marriage, jealousy isn't the problem. Trauma, extreme betrayal, extreme violation, etc. is the problem. And cons ou dering her behavior after their first child, she could have had post partum issues that were never addressed. I don't want to disparage him, but I have been in a marriage where I received a gift for our baby from a woman my ex had nude photos of, that I discovered the pics on. So imagine the slap in the face recieving a gift for a tiny human being created by you and the father, when his former (or maybe sneakily current) lover are still communicating. My ex was also very apathetic and would easily go to bed and sleep like a baby uninterested and apathetic to my feeling and careless at what he was doing to me. On the outside, we looked like a cute couple with a beautiful baby. But nobody knew the extreme mental abuse and eventually physical abuse I went through until I started to confide in te trusted friends. I would just like to add that I was not a drug or alcohol user during this period in my life. Yeah I smoked pot as a teen a few times and drank socially in my 20s but this all occurred in my 30s. My ex seemed very normal to most people and would play the victim to his family. It was actually his own friends that saw through him because they could see the lies he had told about me to be diametrically opposed to who I was and am. Dealing with someone like him, can send someone over the line of sanity. And it is a shame. I really enjoyed Phil's work but philandering is a form of intimate partner abuse. So is the apathy about the misdeeds. It is crazy making otherwise known as gaslighting.

Troy McClure was arguably the greatest satirical comedy character in animated history. Just one of Hartman's many, many creative achievements. We all miss this wonderful man terribly. As great a tragic loss as comedy has ever sustained.

I’ve seen no one else who could pull off the dead pan comedic style that he used. It was a kind of a “Joe Friday” seriousness and authority in his delivery that made me burst out laughing every time I saw his work. THE BEST!
I was an extra at the time Phil Hartman died. I was on the back lot and got to talk to him a few days beforehand. He was a genuinely nice person and even showed me the engine of his new Ferrari when I asked about his car. His death is a tragedy for everyone
This was one of very few stars that affected me and my friends, terribly. Senseless. He brought enormous joy to millions and hr didn't cause problems in society, in any way. No bs, scandels, etc. He always delivered. Every single time you saw or heard him. Once again, tremendous job growing the channel!
Most women married to men this talented would have been so supportive-what a terrible choice he apparently made? If you are so unhappy with your spouse, it's a free country, MOVE ON... Bren seemed to have "clung" to this marriage as he patiently also tried to cope. (Divorce is so expensive, ha !) He "Made " SNL what it was for so many years; Funny back then, better writers too ? I remember Joe Rogan said he asked Phil why he didn’t just pull the plug on the marriage, and Phil said he was afraid divorce would result in less time with his kids. He was reportedly a very loving father.
Every time I think I've stopped grieving over the loss of Phil Hartman, some talented video-maker goes and makes an incredible tribute to the late comedian and my heart rips open all over again. There are some people who make the world a better place in such a subtle way that it isn't until they are gone that there is an empty spot that even the sun can't fill. Phil was one of those people. His comedy and memory will last forever.
Yeah, Phil was an incredibly gifted entertainer and his work meant a lot to me. Definitely one of those people who didn't get the appreciation he deserved till after he was gone, which says a lot because he was pretty damn popular in life. Thanks for watching!

My brother went to high school with Phil Hartman. We watched his career progress. Hartman lived in our hometown for several years until he went full on “Hollywood”. It was tragically heartbreaking to learn of his demise.
A few years back someone put up pictures of Phil's children they are all grownup and awesome his son is studying art. As for his sister she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. I must say Brynn's sister did a wonderful job with both of them. They were told the truth of what happened once they were old enough to know. Their Aunt and Uncle took excellent care of their well being.

I got chills when he said who they hired along with Hartman to SNL. That group created the golden age of SNL They were amazing and the chemistry amongst the whole cast showed through and I consider myself truly lucky to have experienced it.
I loved Phil, he was spot on with all his impersonations. He died way too soon via his lunatic wife who was a mental case and needed to be put away in an institution before she could destroy a wonderful soul.

There are always two sides to every story. I would imagine Brynn needed more attention than Phil was able to provide to her and his star rising with her star falling made it very difficult for their marriage. It's just so tragic that their emotional situations resulted in both their deaths. I am just glad to hear their children are doing well as adults.
If you play the intro to SNL when they introduce Phil, the woman he’s sitting across from is his wife. You’ll notice her earring was swinging. She was trying to get her face in the shot, and the director told her to turn her head back because they only wanted his face in the shot. That’s how much she wanted attention.
Yes. The intro is on RUclips. She's wearing a long dangly earing that's swinging back and forth really fast. She wanted to be a Hollywood insider, but she never was. It's theorized that she killed Phil to send a message to Hollywood for shunning her.
I remember seeing that in a special on Hartman. They also said she got a role in some play but quit because she missed her kids--which I don't believe. She was probably let go
Everybody Phil was around was drunk or high. This was the 70's-90's most his co-workers did a lot of the drugs but Phil didn't and why he is such a legend because he was the designated driver and someone who always knew where comedy industry was going. He had argument s with his wife but he was so busy with his career he didn't realize how dangerous his wife had become.

I didn't know he died this way until tonight. I've spent my life thinking he died of an overdose. Never knew his wife had the problem and their lives ended the way they did. Absolutely heartbreaking. The first time I knew of Phil Hartman properly was strangely a bonkers 'Pot Noodle' advert in the UK in the early mid 90s which featured 'The Ace of Spades' by Motörhead (Lemmy, the front man who was from my city of Stoke-on-Trent!) I then learned he was the voice of Lionel Hutz and was a fan even now I knew who he was

First of all who could put dislikes to this video. Shame on you ! Phil Hartman was a very underrated comedian. I didn't care for him at first but after a couple of years on SNL I was hooked. His characters were extremely funny. This man didn't deserve to die this way. I still feel sad today ! 😞
Apparently Phil spoke to Joe Rogan before his death telling Joe about the fights with his wife. Rogan told him to divorce her but he didn't listen. Very sad what happened at the end
Phil was a comedic genius on SNL. He had some of the most memorable characters like Caveman Lawyer. I consider him up there with Eddie Murphy and his time on SNL.

We can't say for sure, but it presents as classical narcissistic behaviour. I feel for the children left alone in the house unattended with their dead father. For me, that's the most horrifying part of this story
I always thought Phil had the most gorgeous face and smile! He was such a beautiful guy! Beyond his great looks and his dapper Dan demeanor, he had the unbreakable comedy chops to never break character! He was a talent taken way too soon in such a terrible way!
Moral of the story : if you let mental illness fester then supply it with drugs and alcohol, people WILL end up dead. Poor Phil shoulda jumped ship as soon as she was sniffing up every powder in sight. I feel like he probably partied as well and thought little of it at the time but he had no idea it would fry her already deeply unstable perception of reality.
Sounds like it was a problem for her previously, she'd gotten sober for a while and relapsed not long before she killed him and herself. Would be good if we could get an official documentary about him and hear from those who knew him personally.
She wasn't that it of touch with reality.... she was just depressed and envious of her husband's success. Most women would hand loved being Phil Hartman's wife, but Brynn was very ambitious... she just didn't have the likes or talent to come anywhere close to reaching her goals. She was utterly selfish and vindictive.
Phil was a funny guy, immensely talented, I loved his work and was shocked at the murder suicide, it's one of those, I can't believe it moments. I also know personally like many others that relationships can be difficult for anyone ,. RIP Phil, thanks for the laughs and enjoyment you brought to me and millions of others.

As someone who was unfamiliar with Phil Hartman, his contributions to the comedy world, and his career, thank you for this video. I think you did a stellar job detailing, not just the tragedy of his life, but also highlighting his contributions to the world. This is something too many people look over when it comes to the whole "true crime" category. I believe that the reporting was fair to all parties, and did not paint anyone in a negative light who was too undeserving of their description. Thank you again, very good video.
He was such a talented gentleman and it truly was ashame we lost such a genuinely funny individual. I remember when this had happened and honestly when I had heard about it I was in shock.
One tiny error. Maura Tierney was cast the day before the pilot episode of Newsradio was shot, so Phil would not have known about her being part of the cast before he joined the show. Also, Joe Rogan was not in the pilot episode and joined from the second episode.
I remember hearing about this on Jesse Ventura’s radio show of all things. Jesse producer broke the news. Jesse said he didn’t want too talk about it out of respect for Phils family. The producer didn’t agree. This lead too a heated on air exchange. Jesse ended up walking off his own show with 30 min left.

Her killing herself was not GUILT for what she had done. She did not want to go to prison. She was selfish and used to getting everything she wanted and was an addict. Going to jail would mean no cocaine and no alcohol. I think that is what she could not live with. Tragic for the kids. What a hell of a mother.
That story still haunts me. 😖 Yes, sadly this sort of thing is STILL all too common but generally it's the abusive husband/bf who murders. We really need to improve our "stalker" laws to mitigate this horror. It's to do with gun control as well. What was a gun doing in that house?!
He probably thought she was his cross to bear. This was a toxic relationship, no one should stay with someone who has her kind of behaviour. Some men think it is cute that a woman is jealous around them, no it is not cute, it is nasty.
Joe Rogan and Phil were close friends. Phil told Joe one reason he was slow to divorce Brynn was that it would cost him a fortune in legal fees. Maybe Phil thought he could reason with Brynn and over time things would settle down. He did buy her a gun, big mistake, and they had guns in the house. She had a long history with drugs, and despite rehab she never really got past it. They fought often. It was a toxic relationship.
Yep! Also, people think only men are capable of this type of behavior, but women are too! It’s a scary world out there. You could be sleeping, feeding, nurturing, and loving your very own killer…. Quite frightening if you think about it😞
Jealousy doesn't even make sense, and too many women don't comprehend that. You can't force someone to love you, be faithful or not leave. It onlnly works if they genuinely feel that way about you, respect you and voluntarily want to and choose to be there. If they don't, all the anger and jeaousy in the world can't change that.
The reason that Brynn was so calm and lucid at that final dinner date with her friend was because she had already decided on what she was about to do. Phil and those children did not deserve this.
The dynamic of this relationship is so similar to me & my ex it's terrifying. His wandering eye & tendency to go to sleep or shut her out during arguments; her drug use, jealousy & feelings of inadequacy in her career. The difference was the presence of a gun in the home & the fact we broke up (they didn't). Don't ever "try to make things work" with someone--especially if you have kids--when things are this bad. I feel so bad for the kids they left behind.

The connector to suicides and murders had not been made public enough we just prefer to demonize people .

They usually call them hallucinations and delusions. Knowing the side effects won’t stop you from committing those acts but they do inform you.
Or self medicating from emotional abuse Hartman put her through...dude was married how many times? There's a pattern. Abusive men are wonderful at hiding what's happening behind closed doors. They smear their "hostage" letting everyone think they are trying so hard to make the relationship work. All the blame lands on their victim. Either you don’t actually need the medicine and you thought a pill would fix something you could’ve fixed yourself, or you do need medication but your chemistry didn’t work with Zoloft so you just stop taking that and get a different medicine. Zoloft didn’t kill Phil. His psycho wife killed him. Hopped up on alcohol and cocaine and she wound up making dumb choices.
Yet people mock those of us who are fanatically anti-drug. Well, look at the damage it does. Phil was a joy to watch, this deprived the world of his talent. Sad.
I will always remember the first time Phil played Ed McMahon with Dana as Johnny Carson. He said, "You are correct, Sir." The audience paused for a second, and that moment was a risk he took, and we all experienced it. But we all know how the audience reacted next. Laughter. Loud joyful laughter. Acceptance and participation. It was so great.
Well she was just really really ill to be fair. I’m not backing her but she had serious mental health issues, probably some sort of personality disorder like BPD
Amazing job, I don't think I blinked once. Informative and respectful, I just broke in the end. I'm a few years too young to have been lucky enough to have fully enjoyed his talent while he was alive, but I started looking in to his work few years ago after hearing his former co-stars and fellow comedians talking about him. What a talent this man was.
Loved Phil Hartman. Broke my heart when this incident happened. No one knew what he was going through with his wife. So sad. His name was Phil Hartman- you may remember him from such network television shows as SNL, News Radio and The Simpsons. 😢
I did not watch Friends when it came out in the 90s even though everyone I knew was enthralled with it. I did, however, watch News Radio and absolutely loved it. I was devastated when we lost Phil, who I thought was a comical genius.

None of us were there in their home to even know what REALLY happened. Mental illness is not a reason to hate someone. And, this video even alludes to Phil's infidelity in previous marriage. If that was part of his last marriage, jealousy isn't the problem. Trauma, extreme betrayal, extreme violation, etc. is the problem. And cons ou dering her behavior after their first child, she could have had post partum issues that were never addressed. I don't want to disparage him, but I have been in a marriage where I received a gift for our baby from a woman my ex had nude photos of, that I discovered the pics on. So imagine the slap in the face recieving a gift for a tiny human being created by you and the father, when his former (or maybe sneakily current) lover are still communicating. My ex was also very apathetic and would easily go to bed and sleep like a baby uninterested and apathetic to my feeling and careless at what he was doing to me. On the outside, we looked like a cute couple with a beautiful baby. But nobody knew the extreme mental abuse and eventually physical abuse I went through until I started to confide in te trusted friends. I would just like to add that I was not a drug or alcohol user during this period in my life. Yeah I smoked pot as a teen a few times and drank socially in my 20s but this all occurred in my 30s. My ex seemed very normal to most people and would play the victim to his family. It was actually his own friends that saw through him because they could see the lies he had told about me to be diametrically opposed to who I was and am. Dealing with someone like him, can send someone over the line of sanity. And it is a shame. I really enjoyed Phil's work but philandering is a form of intimate partner abuse. So is the apathy about the misdeeds. It is crazy making otherwise known as gaslighting.

I’ve seen no one else who could pull off the dead pan comedic style that he used. It was a kind of a “Joe Friday” seriousness and authority in his delivery that made me burst out laughing every time I saw his work. THE BEST!
I was an extra at the time Phil Hartman died. I was on the back lot and got to talk to him a few days beforehand. He was a genuinely nice person and even showed me the engine of his new Ferrari when I asked about his car. His death is a tragedy for everyone
This was one of very few stars that affected me and my friends, terribly. Senseless. He brought enormous joy to millions and hr didn't cause problems in society, in any way. No bs, scandels, etc. He always delivered. Every single time you saw or heard him.

Every time I think I've stopped grieving over the loss of Phil Hartman, some talented video-maker goes and makes an incredible tribute to the late comedian and my heart rips open all over again. There are some people who make the world a better place in such a subtle way that it isn't until they are gone that there is an empty spot that even the sun can't fill. Phil was one of those people. His comedy and memory will last forever.
Yeah, Phil was an incredibly gifted entertainer and his work meant a lot to me. Definitely one of those people who didn't get the appreciation he deserved till after he was gone, which says a lot because he was pretty damn popular in life. Thanks for watching!

A few years back someone put up pictures of Phil's children they are all grownup and awesome his son is studying art. As for his sister she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. I must say Brynn's sister did a wonderful job with both of them. They were told the truth of what happened once they were old enough to know. Their Aunt and Uncle took excellent care of their well being.

There are always two sides to every story. I would imagine Brynn needed more attention than Phil was able to provide to her and his star rising with her star falling made it very difficult for their marriage. It's just so tragic that their emotional situations resulted in both their deaths. I am just glad to hear their children are doing well as adults.
If you play the intro to SNL when they introduce Phil, the woman he’s sitting across from is his wife. You’ll notice her earring was swinging. She was trying to get her face in the shot, and the director told her to turn her head back because they only wanted his face in the shot. That’s how much she wanted attention.

Everybody Phil was around was drunk or high. This was the 70's-90's most his co-workers did a lot of the drugs but Phil didn't and why he is such a legend because he was the designated driver and someone who always knew where comedy industry was going.
He had argument s with his wife but he was so busy with his career he didn't realize how dangerous his wife had become.

Absolutely heartbreaking. The first time I knew of Phil Hartman properly was strangely a bonkers 'Pot Noodle' advert in the UK in the early mid 90s which featured 'The Ace of Spades' by Motörhead (Lemmy, the front man who was from my city of Stoke-on-Trent!)

Poor Phil shoulda jumped ship as soon as she was sniffing up every powder in sight. I feel like he probably partied as well and thought little of it at the time but he had no idea it would fry her already deeply unstable perception of reality.
Sounds like it was a problem for her previously, she'd gotten sober for a while and relapsed not long before she killed him and herself. Would be good if we could get an official documentary about him and hear from those who knew him personally.

As someone who was unfamiliar with Phil Hartman, his contributions to the comedy world, and his career, thank you for this video. I think you did a stellar job detailing, not just the tragedy of his life, but also highlighting his contributions to the world. This is something too many people look over when it comes to the whole "true crime" category. He was such a talented gentleman and it truly was ashame we lost such a genuinely funny individual. I remember when this had happened and honestly when I had heard about it I was in shock.
One tiny error. Maura Tierney was cast the day before the pilot episode of Newsradio was shot, so Phil would not have known about her being part of the cast before he joined the show. Also, Joe Rogan was not in the pilot episode and joined from the second episode.
Loved Phil Hartman. Not only a comic genius but talented in many other areas. I miss him on Earth 🌍
I remember hearing about this on Jesse Ventura’s radio show of all things. Jesse producer broke the news. Jesse said he didn’t want too talk about it out of respect for Phils family. The producer didn’t agree. This lead too a heated on air exchange. Jesse ended up walking off his own show with 30 min left.

She had a long history with drugs, and despite rehab she never really got past it. They fought often. It was a toxic relationship.
Yep! Also, people think only men are capable of this type of behavior, but women are too! It’s a scary world out there. You could be sleeping, feeding, nurturing, and loving your very own killer…. Quite frightening if you think about it😞
Jealousy doesn't even make sense, and too many women don't comprehend that. You can't force someone to love you, be faithful or not leave. It onlnly works if they genuinely feel that way about you, respect you and voluntarily want to and choose to be there. If they don't, all the anger and jeaousy in the world can't change that.

The reason that Brynn was so calm and lucid at that final dinner date with her friend was because she had already decided on what she was about to do.

The dynamic of this relationship is so similar to me & my ex it's terrifying. His wandering eye & tendency to go to sleep or shut her out during arguments; her drug use, jealousy & feelings of inadequacy in her career. The difference was the presence of a gun in the home & the fact we broke up (they didn't). Don't ever "try to make things work" with someone--especially if you have kids--when things are this bad. I feel so bad for the kids they left behind.
I was just a kid when he died. I had no idea he was murdered at the time. I loved watching his tv show.

@@FaithandNova pharmaceuticals are supposed to be safe but what they don’t tell you is that you may want to kill yourself and have The urge to blow up your apt or run your car through a grocery store window , but at least you won’t be depressed . The connector to suicides and murders had not been made public enough we just prefer to demonize people .
@@xiomanaxoxoxo3212 They give you a large pamphlet with every medication and if you would ever stop to read it, you would clearly see every thing you mentioned is listed in some form or another. They usually call them hallucinations and delusions. Knowing the side effects won’t stop you from committing those acts but they do inform you.
Or self medicating from emotional abuse Hartman put her through...dude was married how many times? There's a pattern. Abusive men are wonderful at hiding what's happening behind closed doors. They smear their "hostage" letting everyone think they are trying so hard to make the relationship work. All the blame lands on their victim. This woman lost her marriage and her children and left her smeared and devastated...ostracized. so she snapped like Betty Broderick.

@Cathy Trujillo one of two things happened. Either you don’t actually need the medicine and you thought a pill would fix something you could’ve fixed yourself, or you do need medication but your chemistry didn’t work with Zoloft so you just stop taking that and get a different medicine. Zoloft didn’t kill Phil. His psycho wife killed him. Hopped up on alcohol and cocaine and she wound up making dumb choices.

I liked when he worked with Chris Farley doing the matt Foley thing on SNL in the 90s.
I will always remember the first time Phil played Ed McMahon with Dana as Johnny Carson. He said, "You are correct, Sir." The audience paused for a second, and that moment was a risk he took, and we all experienced it. But we all know how the audience reacted next. Laughter. Loud joyful laughter. Acceptance and participation. It was so great.
She was a nasty jealous piece of work. Couldn’t be happy with the immense beautiful life she had with him.
Well she was just really really ill to be fair. I’m not backing her but she had serious mental health issues, probably some sort of personality disorder like BPD

I'm a few years too young to have been lucky enough to have fully enjoyed his talent while he was alive, but I started looking in to his work few years ago after hearing his former co-stars and fellow comedians talking about him. What a talent this man was.

I did not watch Friends when it came out in the 90s even though everyone I knew was enthralled with it. I did, however, watch News Radio and absolutely loved it. I was devastated when we lost Phil, who I thought was a comical genius.
