    Great video. My micro sd slot was breaking. It was very straight forward and i used putty on my pc to type in the commands.

    Did all steps here. Vcgencmd …. Grep 17 outputs the 17: 302…. (All same as the video) but when shutdown and removal of sd card, cut of power and inserted usb. It does not boot

      Yes, it doesn't boot in my case as well. Did everything as it was described in the video.

      Thanks, this video was actually prompted by you, I was installing FreeBSD on a Raspberry PI 3, wasn't such a good desktop experience - it eas just slow.

    We don't even need the first boot. After create the image on SD, Windows will see the boot partition, and we can edit config.txt directly (with a better editor than notepad because carriage return misreading)! Thank you for the tip!!

      Correct you certainly can just edit the config file

      literally just saved my project, tried for hours through pi os then i saw this tried windows, and it worked perfectly

    Solved it, but had to adjust config.txt on the usb-stick on my computer to root=/dev/sda2
    Then when booting it goes in safety-mode (ctrl-d message) because fstab is faulty, enter root password and change the partitions lines to /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 to / boot and /
    reboot, and now it worked.

    Hi! Please. And, how i can return to boot from sd card if i need?

      It just sets the boot priority, should still boot from sd if you remove the bootable usb. The ones I've tested do

    tried it, but from several usb stick it hangs during booting-process, last random: crng init done

      @@sheridans I just figured out that rpi4 and higher has a bootloader and it looks like it the 3b version not. I don't know about the 3b+
      the bootloader seems to provide more parameters. i was able to boot from usb-stick but not from sata-ssd with usb->sata adapter though.

    I've search for a while, and comes my conclusion. if pi isn't being configured boot from USB/network, then it will do nothing if SD boot fails. so sadly i have to wait for my sd card's arrival

    What keys did you use after “program_usb_boot_mode=1” to save and exit?

      Sorry, my fault. I pressed escape to get out of editing mode in vi and then typed ":wq" followed by enter to write and quit

    doesnt work for me. frustrating AF. why is this stuff so hard?? you do step by step the same things and when i take oput the micro sd and boot the device, nothing happens

    Having followed your instructions, step by step,"to a t", my SSD still refuses to boot. Any suggestions from anyone on this thread would be so appreciated. I'm ready to just purchase a PI4. Wish I could find one! Apparently that is not an option either at this point in time unless willing to spend three times what they normally go for. So frustrating!

      Did you try both ports? Someone on here suggested it only works from 1 port on some of them. Also what does the oot register read?

      @@sheridans I saw that. Indeed I have. All 4. Thought perhaps it could be the cable. I have a StarTech USB312SAT3CB connected to a 240GB Kingston. A google search for me doesn't seem to turn up any real issues.

      It should boot from either, from my experience.

    and is there a way to prioritze usb boot if not boot sd card ?

      I made something that uses the Pi Zero 2w, but getting the SD card is difficult. So, I hoped I could just pop in a USB stick and boot to OS to write a new OS on the card.@@sheridans

      You can use the Raspberry pi imager to to create usb image or you can clone an existing sd card

      Certainly works with usb ssd, I've only tried it with 3b rev 1.2 (3 off them, all I have access to). Some people have commented usb slot position matters, not something I have encountered on the ones I have.

    4:08, Hi when i try to write under all i get the error saying E353 : Nothing in register ". I dont understand what is going on or what i am missing, can anyone help me ?

      Is a a 3B? Never had an issues on the ones I've done it on, but that's only about 4 or 5

      @@sheridans Nevermind, i could'nt edit from there for some reasons.. so i opened it on windows in text editor and changed it from there and it worked

      At 3:05, the commands are on the screen as typed in to the config file, and I literally read the line out loud?

    Look's like I'm one of the "lucky" ones for which this does not work - the bit is changed and tried with a few usb flash drives - nada.

      @@sheridans yep. Tried the way you show. Tried the way "usb booting made easy" (or close enough) on the forums where you leave the sd card in and it tells it to boot of a usb - gave some kernel error and was stuck on the flashing _. IDK, my rpi3 B is V1.2 but with the older CPU and just refuses any attempt of USB boot.

      I had the same problem but maybe for you is the same as me.
      Put your usb drive/pen in de usb poort at the top right poort of the Raspberry.
      So when you look at the back of your raspberry is the usb poort in the top right. (Network connection left)
      Hope it helps you

    Thanks for this. Is it possible to do this via Raspberry pi imager under "Misc utility images > Bootloader > USB boot"? If we flash that image on the SD card and update the bootloader maybe it's a better way? I'm just too scared to try it myself.
