  • I think this is probably the best quality video and audio that I have posted here, and yet only a handful of people have seen it. I do not generally go "fishing" for "likes", but if you like it, please consider clicking "like" so that others will find it. Thanks! (PS - be sure to watch it in 4K if you have a screen that will benefit from the high resolution.)
Intro to the 2023 MerleFest Hillside Album Hour with the Waybacks and Friends including Celia Woodsmith (of Della Mae) on lead vocals. Intro songs including "Across the Universe" (The Beatles), "Whiskey Bar" (The Doors), " "Itchycoo Park" (Small Faces), "Higher Ground" (Stevie Wonder), "That Smell" (Lynyrd Skynyrd), leading up to the opening song "Baba O'Riley" from the 2023 Hillside album, "Who's Next". In the transition from "That Smell" to "Baba O'Riley", James Nash strings together lyrics from several songs by the Who, including "Join Together", "My Generation", "Magic Bus", and "Baba O'Riley" itself. He also gives us a taste of the opening riff from "Pinball Wizard" between "Higher Ground" and "That Smell".
Front row from left: Sam Bush, mandolin; Warren Hood, fiddle and vocals; Celia Woodsmith, lead vocal; James Nash, guitar and vocals, Jens Kruger, banjo. Back row from left: Red Young, keyboards; Chuck Hamilton, drums; Joe Kyle Jr, bass.
The audio for this one comes from the official CD of the performance. The audio from my camera was good, but not nearly as good as the version James Nash mixed and mastered. And since I'd held onto this one for a year before posting it, I thought I would use the better audio. However, he did one edit to the audio for the CD, so I had to do a similar edit in my video to keep it all in sync. You can see it just as they are starting Baba O'Riley.
This video was posted once before, but this version is improved in several ways: 1) Some of the crowd audio from the camera is mixed in at appropriate places, 2) it is cropped to bring the band closer within the frame, and 3) it has been adjusted for color chroma to give a much better picture.

Fantastic! My 1st Hillside . Such joy and excitement these musicians bring every year. I cried like a 13 year old seeing the Beatles in 1964,
