I really wish they could be together but this show is based on Emily DIckinson's life and they didn't end up together, but wishfully thinking the writers would stray away from history.

Tbh even if Sue married Austin in real life it was not a happy marriage. And Emily's correspondance with Sue cleeearly shows she was in a relation with her for most of her life. Like this quote : "Now, farewell, Susie . . . I add a kiss, shyly, lest there is somebody there! Don’t let them see, will you Susie?" She called her the only woman in the world ! So even though they probably won't run away together, I'm confident that in the show their relationship will go on 💞

There's a lot of misinformation surrounding who Emily Dickinson was as a person. And this misinformation wasn't just details lost in translation after many years, it was deliberately crafted by one Mabel Loomis Todd, who kinda hated Emily and Sue for reasons that may be spoilery for the show (look it up if you wanna know).
I'll admit I'm not the objective scholar either since I am very invested in Emisue in-show and IRL. However, in my humble opinion, one of the best descriptions of Emily Dickinson as a person is her obituary. You should check it out the obituary writer really has a way with her words.

I've read about Austin and Sue's marriage and turns out Austin ended up with another girl he fell for which I don't remember. I just hope that the story will use that as a plot twist to Emily Dickinson's life like Sue and Austin ended up separating as she chose to be with Emily instead.
that girl is Mabel Loomis Todd, Austin mistress for a long time who eventually publish and "Edited" "Altered" Emily's Poems and letters to fit her own style, she was the reason why people only found out later on that Emily mostly wrote her poems and letters for Sue coz she edited her out and make all the "her/she" into "him/he" and the reason why Emily's work was split to two family the Dickinson and the Todd it was messy.
