I loved the show Dickinson as someone who's tired of the "wE cAnT kNoW wHo ShE lOvEd" narrative surrounding Emily Dickinson... there's so much nuance there, and straight people love to brush it off. I don't mind so much if people--especially like middle school English teachers--don't mention her sexuality, but a lot of people seem to go out for the way to insist we can't know that she loved women--or anyone--when her living relatives/the body that speaks for her legacy say we should not ignore the fact that she was almost definitely in some sort of relationship with Sue, as per letters and mentions left behind. There's actually a very interesting dynamic where the mistress of her brother marked out all good mentions of Sue in Emily's letters and such, at least for the most part, because she was jealous of Sue being married to Emily's brother, and Emily died before her. I'm blanking on the name of the woman (deaf/HOH, disabled, married lesbian, vintage) who did a RUclips vid on that situation. Anyway, great content as always! Edit: Jessica Kellgren-Fozard did the vid. I'm not 100% she talked about the mistress, but I do know she has a video on Emily Dickinson that I feel is important!

Honestly loved Ben. I didn't see him as Emily's...suitor? But a best friend, her greatest confidant-second to Sue, of course. Someone she can be herself with. I loved his charater because he encouraged her work and didn't force her to live by the rules of their time.
And irl they weren't romantically involved, Ben was her tutor, and probably one of the only people who believed in her supported her in her writing, so he's a good guy in my book.
