  • If you thought a "refractometer" video from Mark Terryberry would just include the basics of how to use a refractometer then maybe you haven't watched enough TOD videos yet.
In typical Tip of the Day fashion Mark delves deep into topics having to do with the refraction of light and how in the end refraction impacts how well your coolant concentration is maintained, which in turn positively or negatively impacts your tool performance, tool life, and surface finishes.

HAAS is awesome. No other machine supplier does this for their customers.

they aim their videos mostly at ppl using the machines.. wich is great for their market segment ..

Spectacular as usual, great visual aids, logical build up of concepts, Mark's soothing voice, and even entertaining applicational clips. Thanks Haas (and Mark and video team.)

Yup the production value is outstanding. I didnt know a fish swimming near the bottom needs more trajectory off set, and the thickness of my refractor film needs to be very constant.

Wonderful video and one of the best introductions to optics I have seen! The laser demo is fantastic.
One thing to be careful of is that you can’t directly read % concentration for some coolants. We use one of the Trim Microsol products and they provide a conversion chart from refractive reading to % concentration. For example, a refractive reading of 5.8 is actually 7% concentration for that particular coolant.

6 out of 10 sounds more like 3/5ths of us here in the United States. Not 3 quarters. Great informative video btw.

lol. Fractions. If it were 1/3, we would never say 2/6ths. 3/5ths it is. I think next time I'll just go with %. About 60% of everyone in the World is wearing corrective lenses, while here in the U.S. that number grows to 75%. Better insurance, or worse eyesight?

Do you not have to multiply the brix reading with the refractometer index that is shown in the datasheet of the cooalant? (like 1,4 or 1,5)

Don’t forget to calibrate using the same water that you mixed with the coolant.
