Firstly thanks to the person who uploaded the video of the best ever prime minister of India, beyond doubts. 3 quick observations to share with viewers here: 1) Those were the days when Dinners organised in the honour of Indian PM was not attended by the top leaders of US, Including President of US. That explains a lot of diplomatic and global status of India back in 1960s. 2) Chacha Nehru, on his visit to USA, met with indians living abroad and told them about them latest developments in India. Be it calling himself a " Pratham Sevak", meetings with indians residing abroad, or Nehru Jackets, one wonders how much Nehruji has influenced Modi and his conduct as PM? It is all the more interesting because of Modi's stated stance on Nehru ji and his dislike for the person. 3) Nehru ji had been PM of India for good 14 years by the time this meeting happened. As the video states, in these nearly 14 years, He visited White house for the 3rd time. Considering that US was already a declared super power, it is amusing that he visited US only for 3 times. The coldness in body language of American president is quite apparent. While rest of the world was bowing down to the might of US, to remain non committal to both US and USSR must have been a very bold and difficult path to follow. All said and Done, Nehruji was the best PM we could have ever asked for post 1947. With war on the border, communal tensions in India at its peak, and Princely states still unwilling to join India, it takes a nerve of steel to still architect the modern india. We could have so easily gone the pakistan ways...but thanks to Chacha's farsightedness and intellect, we kept moving in right direction, fruits of which we still reap in 2018.

Nehru overall provided stability to secular, non aligned, democratic India and brought centrally controlled govt policy. On flip side his legacy to promote his family hurt India the most as it led to nepotism and eventually corruption.

@@susanthomas7659 That's very true. There have been great attempts to malign and vilify this great man. His flirting and love affair with Mountbatten's wife has nothing to do with who he was as a leader. There is no doubt that his vision and foundations have made us who we are. We cannot ignore Indira also who in my opinion still has been the most powerful yet controversial leaders of India, followed by Narsimha Rao who most definitely needs a Bharat Ratna. On that note even contributions of Shastriji or even Rajiv's IT and computers and telecom (sam pitroda) cannot be ignored. Here in India we focus only on the blemishes and wrong doings as very very few have the heart and mind to acknowledge the important contributions and decisions by leaders that have helped India stand up on it's feet as a modernity aiming progressive thinking state.
EDIT: should the failures of Dr. MMS as a PM to prevent 2G 3G and coal scams be his only legacy? What about what he achieved under PM Narsimha Rao's protection to make the sweeping changes needed to see India as progressing economy.

I love Nehru's response. It is so fascinating to me to see the disparate perceptions between Nehru and the American from the press. The press guy can't understand how the Nehru foreign policy is not creating a bloc. What Nehru wanted was a new kind of world order in which independent sovereign states were respected and could act alone. That didn't always mean that India would be neutral. What it meant though was that it considered that it could have good relations with both America and the Soviet Union. American foreign policy thinking was just the opposite. Nehru developed this idea from his experience of two World Wars, in which he saw the negative impact of nations forming into big opposing groups. He tried to forge a new foreign policy that would avoid such disasters. He was a visionary and an idealist.

    • @user-oc1cz5co3j
      @user-oc1cz5co3j 3 месяца назад +1

That's what Nehru said in his BBC interview. There is always a tendency of American and European leaders to look at the world from their own perspective. But every global problem is not a Western problem, and in many cases the West created those problems. All that Nehru wanted was to carve out a different world order with the former colonized countries in the forefront. As Nehru had an immense knowledge of history, he understood that all the Third World countries share a common history and heritage, and were once squeezed under imperialist hands. So, he wanted them to be self-reliant, and catch up with the West. He never told anyone to adopt any particular ideology; though he was a strong socialist, he believed in open-minded approach and creative thinking. He wanted the Afro-Asian states to shape themselves in their own way, but to be developed to the extent so as to catch up with the West.
The non-alignment was not just a foreign policy, it's a more historical and emotional bonding between Africa and Asia, which Nehru wanted to reassert in the post-war period.

He did not become President of a political party because his father donated money and recommended him to that post. And he will never send an Indian soldier to fight the Chinese in winter dressed in SUMMER uniform. Non alignment was a parade of buffoons who thought more about themselves and had no idea where their countries stood then. Are you aware that the TEEN MURTI BHAVAN where Nehru resided and his daughter converted ( public property) into a museum was known as the Flag Staff House -- the official residence of the Army Commander When Gen Boucher resigned in 1948 it ought to have gone to Gen Carriappa --- BUT OUR 'GREAT ' MAN MOVED IN. And be informed that the person whom you praise more than necessary became the first PM of India through the back door. Neither Gandhi nor Nehru had any principles nor did they believe in democracy if the results were against their wishes. In April 1946 when the election to the post of the President of the CONgress were held -- then a stepping stone away to be the first PM of India, it was Sardar Patel who had secured 13 of the then 15 CWC votes. Nehru the "great: NIL Unfortunately Hindustan had MKG the manipulator to contend He asked the Sardar to stand down -- which the great patriot did -- and the rest as they say is history

Non-alignment, that was much criticized by the West then, proved to be a boon to India today. India can today look up USA in the eye to say No in a wide variety of issues. It is under no obligation and pressue. This kind of foreign policy where you keep good relationship with one and all without having to belong to a "bloc" has served India well. India has good relationship today with Arab nations and Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran, USA and Russia and has a diplomatic mission even in North Korea!

Nehru was a great man in a lot of ways. I belong to the generation who did not see him, only heard about him. My father (now 80 plus) eulogizes him.
Nehru was above all a true democrat. In a letter to editor, written under an assumed name, he warned of too much hero worship of Nehru lest he become a dictator! "We want no Caesars here" he warned.
Long years of freedom fight against Brits (he spent more than 10 years in British jail) and close association with Gandhiji made him a humanist at core. He abhorred wars and thought he could live for ever in peace with China and rest of the world.
Nehru neglected defense as he thought India would never go to war with any nation!
He also neglected primary education, going for IITs and the like. India is still grappling with a high level of illiteracy in the country that is stifling its progress. Much of the developed world in Asia today (Japan, South Korea for eg) first tackled primary education before going in for high tech stuff.
Nehru's model of centralized planning, done with good intentions, was a disaster in the long run. It gave rise to massive bureaucracy, low efficiency and stifled entrepreneurship and private enterprise.
However, we can say all this with hindsight of 20/20. Nehru could never have foreseen these shortcomings. Blame should fall on Indira Gandhi not to dismantle Nehruvian socialism when it was giving India only a "Hindu growth rate" of 2 to 3 % while even Pakistan was growing much faster.
His contribution would however include the institutions he built, his faith in Science and Technology and above all his true democratic credentials.
