CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Upon returning home, Thomas (Evan Adams) posits the need for one to forgive the past, as Victor (Adam Beach) spreads his father's ashes over the river.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This dramatic feature was written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans. Native American writer Sherman Alexie scripted this adaptation of his 1993 short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Director Chris Eyre's previous short Someone Kept Saying Powwow is incorporated into the 88-minute feature. Developed at the Sundance Lab in 1995, the film was a winner of both the Audience Award and the Filmmakers' Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. In 1976, an infant survives a fire that kills his parents. In a flash forward to the present day, the infant has grown up to become the skinny, nerdy adult Thomas (Evan Adams). At Idaho's desolate Coeur d'Alene Indian reservation, the overeager youth is mostly ignored by others, including stoic athletic Victor Joseph (Adam Beach), even though it was Victor's father, alcoholic Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), who saved the infant Thomas' life in the fire. A drunken Arnold later abandoned his family, and Victor hasn't seen his father in a decade. When Victor learns of Arnold's death in Phoenix, Thomas offers to pay for the trip to Phoenix if he can accompany Victor. They make an odd couple since Victor is embarrassed by Thomas' geekiness. In Phoenix, they find that Arnold lived in a small trailer in the desert, and they meet Arnold's friend Suzy Song (Irene Bedard), who provides disturbing truths about Arnold that impact on Victor.

Smoke Signals is an all-time favorite movie of mine. The poem was read by one of my sons at his fathers funeral. The film is a comedy/drama deserving of highest honors!

It's sad how movies like these which are so rich in making us relating to the characters, so realistic, empathetic yet funny are not popular. Only those strerotypical movies that tells false facts are popular and famous. I hope people watch movies like these.
Sakura Hana Because Hollywood is bogus and terrible. People like us must encourage friends to see this sort of quality movie.
My family and I had the privilege of meeting Irene Bedard at a powwow. She was genuinely a kind soul. We watch this movie regularly since it really hits home for us. Generational trauma is real, but it's changing our perception of the past that has healed us all. This movie has many moments that offers insight!
It is real. Some have lived through it and some youth continue to do so.
This is still true.
Interviewed Evan Adams (Thomas) once about a short film he was in. He is so kind, down-to-earth and speaks highly of the people he works with. He should've gotten an Oscar nomination for this role
That ending didn't have to hit that hard, I'm still crying
Excellent movie, by a great writer. The music choices were also noteworthy. Beach has gone onto more roles, and philanthropy . Adams is now an MD, Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia. Great stuff; noteworthy lives.
I forgave my father when I considered his life. He was in college when I was born. His father committed suicide when he was young, so he had no role model. For the years his dad was around, he was abusive. My father did well to stay around and keep us fed and clothed. He had untreated depression all his life. He did the best he could.
I'm sorry to hear that Dana. I hope you've come to peace with all of that.
Very similar to my dad.. who saw his dad commit suicide in 63 then was drafted to nam in 66 .. he died while I was in prison .. I forgive you dad😢
This ending haunts me. I always cry when I watch this.
I love Thomas’s character
Last I heard, he'd become a doctor and was working on his reservation!
The actor who played Thomas Builds the Fire should have won an Oscar.
I thought I understood this movie when I first watched it. Dead wrong. This is one of those that just keep getting deeper the more you watch them. "Deeper" as in, you understand them on this harder to reach, deeply human level, where the movie sort of passes its story on, into your mind, and it plays out there, on its own, changing you from within.
I love your comment!
Yes
It is you who got deeper to appreciate the depth of the movie. Shallow movies or a books do not make this magic.
Do they still make movies like this these days? It's better than I remembered it! Very sweet, funny, lighthearted, and well-acted.
I love this so much. Brings tears to my eyes.
I’ve never forgotten this movie.
Those war cries always get me
This film when I saw it in 1998 was extremely powerful. And Still Stands the Test of Time. "To Forgive Our Fathers." - A Very Powerful Poem.
This was me. Two years before this movie was released.
I did the same thing in San Francisco, Christmas Eve 1996.
This is way this movie speaks to me
Evan Adams' narration is just beautiful; I really love his voice. :)
Thomas and his grandma...lol!!!! But the suite, Forgive Our Fathers.......breath takingly beautiful.
When I watched this movie and got to this point I bawled, because I lost my father to lung cancer when he was 55.
+Aishiya1 much love & light for your heart......
+minta thomson Thank you.
I lost mine to squamous cell carcinoma,i cry every time I watch this,
My dad was my world but in so much pain because he was taken from his mother, so he was in and out of my life
I lost my dad when he was 44. He died day before my 16th bday. Before that he ran away when I was about 12 or 13. I was amgry at him, i never got to forgive him or tell him I love him or any goodbyes. He drank alot and was a bad man when he was drunk but when he was sober, he was such a good man. I don't think I'll ever get over that regret of not saying anything to him or choosing not to say anything.
when i was waiting for my father to die so i could feel safe again, it gave me something to work towards, a point where the pain would end. when he died, the pain and the fear came roaring back all at once, despite my brain knowing i’d never see him (even by accident) ever again. when thomas asks what is left after we forgive our fathers, i say it’s you. what you’ve lived through, what you’ve felt. what you’ve learned, what you’ve survived through. the marks and memories are left obviously, but you are no longer consumed
I am.
Cinematic beauty 😍 And a vulnerable truth that resignates beyond any boundary.
When I watched this movie for the first time, I was holding my breath when Victor was bending down his knees. I was so afraid he was going to leap over the railing of that bridge. I would have hated the movie to end like that.
❤ this movie! Forever!
Watching this helped me to forgive. Thank you.
wow such profound words!
If I cried for my father, it'd be for the one I didn't have, not the one I did.
You had one; can you forgive him?
This movie is amazing, dealing with the depth of forgiveness, and/ or lack- there of, within complex family relationships.
This is a great story. And so true.
One of the best endings ever.
A very special, powerful, and underrated movie!
Slept on scene made me cry thats real
I miss my dad
I love this scene!!
Forgiveness isn't for the perpetrator, it is for the victim. Only after forgiveness can one truly begin to love.
Powerful words.
"Do we forgive our fathers".....thats now my question till i graduate i suppose.
This was a great clip. It touched me.
Perfection is something invented by the human imagination. Nothing else keeps score.
No spider ever spun a web, and decided it wasn’t good enough because some other spider had a better web.
Parents can’t be perfect. Judging their degree of imperfection is a useless activity. Once adults, we need to move forward with whatever skills and tools we can.
ARGH! Why did it get cut off at the end!?!
I know am late. But here is the entire song. ruclips.net/video/0WEVtwQnU9w/видео.html It just gets me fired up.
My dad always yells at me whenever I bring up him beating me with a belt and breaking my things and making me live everyday in fear he still denies it but he and I know what he did so one day I told him I forgive you dad and he about cried and I felt just like Victor yeah my dad could be nice but when he got angry he was a monster I forgive you Father
thanks for sharing, Josh. I'd have to imagine your father yells at you for bringing this up because has a tremendous feeling of shame about how he treated you as you grew up. he may have tried to form an apology hundreds of times, but it never came out. your forgiveness meant the world to him, but it is more for the one doing the forgiving. that is how we move on.
thank you for sharing
Thank you
Beautiful Movie :'* ♡
Beautiful like you
I love being indigenous
Best movie wish it was like that now
Thanks for cutting the end off. Good job
The whole movie used to be on yt. Unfortunately it got deleted.
GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!
If you stopped the movie 20 minutes after you started it, then why are you on the last part of the movie commenting on it?
So powerful
I still dunno how to forgive my father. I don't think it will happen.
Remember that forgiveness is about you.
Forgive your mother first, then return to the father. Then, you will know
Forgive your father for yourself, before its too late because trust me, if you don't, it'll poison you. My dad died day before my 16th bday. He left me and my mom when I was 12 or 13. I blamed him and ignored him. I believed he would be around long enough to hear my side of things. Of course he was an alcoholic and that did his liver in. But you still think he'll be around. Trust me when I say forgive him. Its not for them but for you, because if you don't get that chance like me, you'll be angry and thats not something that just goes away. Its been 10 years going on 11, and I'm still angry.
My Fiancee Is Like Victor With Her Dad
He Passed Away 2 Weeks Ago And Has Not Shown Emotions Or Has Broken Down In Tears She Tries To Be As Tough As She Can
But She Always Avoided Him And Felt Anger Towards Him Because Him And Her Mom Splited Up When She Was A Kid
Man I Gotta Show Her This Movie
wow so many people complaining about the director and everyone...they were Native Americans too!!
The beautiful end clip of the movie cut short.....that's not very nice!

I agree, it was a cheap shot for sure. MovieClips tends to do that, it really irritates me.
Forgive our father when we are bursting at the seams, so we can start healing and begin to live our life.
A cult classic but a movie everybody must watch
love
Spokane, Riverfront Park
As a child this makes you feel sorry for victor.
This hit me hard ❤️
Tell me what’s going to happen? This movie was very well written.
I forgave my father. I hope my son forgives me.
Forgiving our Parents, forgiving our grandparents, fortging our ancestors is an act of liberating our own soul! You must forgive them so that the past does not dominate your futur. You forgive them so you can heal!
...and you must never forget so that the same mistakes dont repeat themselfs!
If yo dont manage to make peace with the past, you will continue to suffer. Sometimes you suffer from wounds that have been passee down for generations. Nobody behaves the way he behave for no reason! We are made into who we are. And only we outselves are able to recognize this, something abot it an break think line.
man, hits way too close to home.
Also this is Canadian. I don't know if your from the US or Canada but I imagine its a little different in both countries.
We never get to talk to our dads
Tell her
Awesome first!!!
A good movie of yester years but assimilation and how do we forgive our parents 🤷🏽👍🏾💯🤦🏽
The book wasn't based in the 90's. So some of the personalities may have clashed with the decade.
Captions would certainly have been nice.
"How do we forgive our fathers? Maybe in a dream. Do we forgive our fathers for leaving us too often, or forever, when we were little? Maybe for scaring us with unexpected rage, or making us nervous because there never seemed to be any rage there at all? Do we forgive our fathers for marrying, or not marrying, our mothers? For divorcing, or not divorcing, our mothers? And shall we forgive them for their excesses of warmth or coldness? Shall we forgive them for pushing, or leaning? For shutting doors or speaking through walls? For never speaking, or never being silent? Do we forgive our fathers in our age, or in theirs? Or in their deaths, saying it to them or not saying it. If we forgive our fathers, what is left?"
I got out of prison finally found my dad on fb... he had dies the day I sent him hi dad its Joe how are you
I have watched all 12 clips from this movie and you JR, have commented on about every one!! Maybe you should have watched the whole movie because you watched clips up till now (surely searching for something MORE than something to just whine about) AND yet you still say you dont have anything GOOD to say!! WOULDN`T IT BE GOOD ENOUGH IF IT HELPED SOMEONE ELSE OUT OTHER THAN YOURSELF`!!!! IT SEEMS YOU TALK ALOT ABOUT YOU and you say I,I,I alot!!!!
'Cause what little brain he had burned out.
REALLY, and then what happened, lol............."SMOKE SIGNALS STILL SUCKS".
really powerful movie
