"Cheers", "Star Trek TOS and TNG", "24", "Penny Dreadful", "X-Men", "Knight Rider". I miss all of these.
There were a lot of great shows back in the day, I used to watch the A-Team, Family Matters, Stargate Atlantis, Get Smart, Zorro, Jonny Bravo, Eek the Cat, Duck Dodgers and many others.
Agreed! Another thing I kinda miss from back in the day was having to plan your day (or even your week) around the broadcast schedule for your favorite show. Sure, it was a little more inconvenient, but it certainly made you look forward to watching that show all week! Plus, not having the ability to 'binge watch' a whole series was probably a good thing because it allowed you to 'process' each episode more and then, over time, when the broadcast Season was over, you felt more satisfied somehow...M'kay, I feel really old now ;)
As odd as it might sound having a routine is a healthy thing, even if its for scheduling entertainment. Another plus side of broadcast TV was once the shows you liked were off, you just turned off the TV and spent time with your family, played video games, or engaged in other hobbies. So it limited the amount of "Vege" time in front of the tube.
A season was 26-30 episodes in the days of yore.
And the shows were of regular size, at a reliable time.
My thumb rule is 25% gold eps, 50% ok, and 25 %....turnabout intruder.
I certainly miss those days! Once you found a show you liked it was a pretty good bet you'd be entertained ( for the most part ) each week. These days its a crap shoot.
It does feel a bit like networks have forgotten a few things about making shows in the move between cable and streaming. I also think they may have failed to learn a fair few lessons as well.
Last series I watched through was Friends, and I watched it with my Mum. Kept us occupied for a good month and a half.
Indeed, I think unfortunately there are the same problems in TV that we're seeing in movies. Where writers and directors are more interested in putting their stamp on something. Rather than producing something audiences will enjoy.
I know you have to be creative and you'll never be able to please everyone. But you can get closer than major studios have been getting lately haha
I liked Thunder Cats and Biker Mice from Mars when I was a kid. They weren't particularly good shows, but I found them entertaining and feel quite a bit of nostalgia for them.
Not that I didn't watch and like a lot of other shows too, like Batman the Animated Series, TMNT, Scooby Doo, classic Tom & Jerry, Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, and so on.
Comfort Television was definitely a thing back in the day! Knowing what shows were going to be on at a certain time was nice. It kinda gave you something to look forward to, even if the shows weren't the VERY best thing you'd ever seen.
You know come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen Biker Mice from Mars. A buddy of mine really loves that show though! Maybe I need to track it down one of these days.
Home improvement and friends are ones i miss
@@ecentral7512 I remember when Home Improvement and Friends were originally airing! Seems like forever ago!!
@@VaderReviews you should do a countdown on best and worst episodes of each show those videos do so well in terms of views
So Much Good Classic Great Old Shows out there! Don't miss the commercial breaks or the 8 months of ReRuns and Summer Crappy Replacement shows, but now we can watch all those old favs on the interwebs. Which a lot of people do instead of watching the "Big Fancy Streaming Shows" Aint that funny!?
As odd as it sounds, I kind of enjoy some of the commercial breaks depending on the channel. I can't remember the last modern shows I completely enjoyed. So these days I just stick with old stuff my brother has on DVD. We just found the complete Dexter's Lab series on DVD at Wal-Mart. So that's been a nice trip down memory lane for sure! I wish they'd put Jonny Bravo on DVD.
@@VaderReviews I recall many times of Holding it in for the commercial break and then the race to get done before the show started again. Good Old Days.
@@the_flyattractor8656 All the younglings these days will never understand the rush when someone called from the living room;
"The shows on!"
Because you had one chance to see it ( until reruns that is ) but if you missed it you missed it.
I'm pretty sure the studios do everything by committee, so the only way you're getting anything through the committee is if you have a chart backing up what people like and you have everones vote!
@@SirArtanis7 definitely explains why everything is so bland and lacks vision these days. I miss the singular vision of film makers like Spielberg, Lucas, and Peter Jackson.
@@VaderReviews Me to Vader... me too...
Gargoyles is awesome, probably one of the best animated show ever made, right up there with Batman the animated series and X-Men. I’d love to see what you have to say about it. 😁
@@SilverSonic2099 Fortunately my brother has the series on DVD so I'll be able to give myself a little refresher on it. The storytelling in that show was really great. I remember when the series first came out, Gargoyles adds were everywhere.
How do you only have 3.95k subs?
@@thecheeseman31415 I ask myself the same question weekly 😉 but seriously I've only been at this for about six years. RUclipss algorithm makes it pretty hard for channels to grow these days. But we're getting there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
It seems today, all you see, is violence in movies and sex on TV. But, what happened to those good old fashioned values on which we used to rely?
I see what you did there 😉but seriously though I feel like these TV shows are getting out of hand. Almost every new series these days is TVMA. I miss more "tame" entertainment.
"Sensationalism has _always_ been a _lazy_ alternative to good writing."
I think so, too. Time was, you tuned in to each new episode because the previous one was a pleasant viewing experience that left you hoping for _another._ Now, it's like you tune in to each new episode because the previous one ended on a _cliffhanger_ and you want to know what's _next._
You hit the nail on the head! The cliffhanger and "Mystery Box" style of storytelling is making TV shows far less enjoyable to watch. As much as this will make me sound like an old geezer to say, back in the old days you kinda knew what to expect from your favorite shows. These days you have to wait a whole season to find out if you're even interested in the story they're trying to tell. Because it all hinges on some "BIG REVEAL" in the final two episodes.
Interesting video lord Vader, It’s sounds like part of the problem might be that every tv show is trying to be a small screen movie divided up instead of just being a show but I could be wrong. As the violence I personally enjoy when used in storytelling like in primal and punisher. But I also don’t think every show has to be like that and you can have some deep themes without having to go too far. Case in point: Justice league. Personally it depends on the story. As for reviewing old action cartoons, please do so.
Greetings my friend! I couldn't agree more, Book of Boba, and the Kenobi series both felt like they were film scripts that they tried to squeeze a show out of. So in the end it felt messy and dragged out.
I enjoyed the first season of Primal, even though it was a bit over the top with the violence.
Agreed and yes to the gargoyles 🍻
@@HEYBERT1984 Gargoyles is a pretty wizard show, back when there was a healthy competition between Disney and WB for quality animation.
@@VaderReviews when that came out it was so awesome i loved it as a kid. Was one of the best shows growing up i thought. There was a lot of good shows back in the 80s and 90s. 🍻
@@HEYBERT1984 At the risk o sounding like an old geezer, they really don't make them like they used to! Here's my video on Gargoyles by the way...

I think the most decent modern series I watched was Resident Alien. Kinda uh... Vulgar but hey, it doesn't cram a message at people and the humor is something I'm a little too familiar with. (Oops)
And agreed. Everything was pretty family friendly. I could be watching cartoons and my family didn't mind. Infact they were cool with stuff like Samurai Jack, Power Puff Girls, Johnny Bravo (they were a bit more wary of that one), and all sorts of fun things.
I also miss shows like Even Stephens, and the older Disney shows back when they actually made good stuff. I also remember when Cartoon Network used to play a lot of great classic action cartoons like Centurions, Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, and many others. I miss old TV especially the documentaries on Animal Planet, and Crocodile Hunter.
@@VaderReviews Oooh definitely all the Animal Planet shows too!
@@GanondorfsWife Back in the day they just showed animals being animals. They didn't do these wussy sanitized nature documentaries. Where they just made up a story and anthropomorphize the animals.
The shows of the 80s and 90s were the best in my opinion. Cosby Show was the Juggernaut of the 80s. The next best for the 90s was ER.
Of course we can’t forget SEINFELD for the win as well from late 80s and 90s. You could not go wrong with Seinfeld.
Cartoons. Well let’s get to the point. Looney Toons for the win!
Oh and let’s not forget that in the 90s a horror icon made his debut that ruled and that was FREDDYS NIGHTMARES!!
There were so many great sitcoms, and cartoons back in the day. I think I must be getting old because the humor in newer shows and movies just annoys me, but I still laugh at older stuff.
@@VaderReviews most of those shows can be watched on Amazon.
Oddly enough even with Cosby’s improprieties, the show still has nostalgia.
Seinfeld is on every station or app. The only thing maybe that makes it rough for everyone is that in todays society it wouldn’t pass the “woke” muster due to certain circumstances, practices in the show. Not to mention Michael Richard’s issues but still doesn’t make the show irrelevant.
I do get how the 22 to 26 episode season is hard on actors especially ones with families, but this 6 to 10 episode model stinks, maybe a 16 to 18 episode season would be a good compromise. Honestly it's the lack of story of the week that kills my desire for modern shows. If you don't like the one story of the season then the whole show is a bust
the benefit actors have though is once their production schedule is complete they get a good amount of off time. That's a really good point about these season long storylines they've been doing. When you can tell where they're going from Episode Two of the season its a slog for the "BIG REVIEL" that you aren't excited to see anyway.
Cough "American" television.
The rest of the world still has good television.
Get as much physical media as you can.
10000000000000% agree!!!! My brother has a big collection of movies and shows because he saw the problem with streaming services back when they first started.
