Man this games presentation is amazing. The hype uplifting music, crazy speed, vibrant colorful graphics, the voice screaming at you. There's so much charm in these old arcade games
It's because they were literally trying to get people that never played video games to play them. Honestly it seems weird that arcade games are dead now considering how many microtransactions all these phone games have now, it's not like you're spending more money on a 50 cent or $1 per-play arcade game.

People were still throwing money into the first Daytona (which was now like 5 years old) so they really had to put some effort in. They kept the essence of the original, which was the sensation of speed 👍
At around 36:39 you can see the 00's driver just standing there while the people (IN THE TIRES) put out the fire. Most likely because widescreen rendering is enabled.
I still remember sitting in this machine as a kid. It was fun using the wheel as it would fight with you while driving. And manual stick was fun to use.

They don't make tracks like this anymore. Aside from the begginer course, wich is meant to be an acessable oval, the intermediate and expert tracks take you to a trek on visual presentation. The atraction park, with a different theme after each tunnel. Pirate, old west, snow, etc. The city track goes from city center to the stadium, to the docks and back into the city. It's not just a racing track, it's a visual trip.
Outrun 2 did the same, Sega racing games despite not being realist were pretty fun! I still give a go to these games nowadays when I have some free time!

Gran Turismo 3 proved the system could get superior graphics, and it ran at a higher resolution (compared to Daytona 2 on native hardware). Considering Daytona 2 is running on extremely expensive hardware (upwards of 10K+) for its time that’s no small feat
When i'm driving in sim : actually having good racing line, perfect braking, touching apex, etc. When i'm driving in arcade : Haywire time Seriously, thats what I love about arcade racing games! You get rules you never have in sims.

Games were advancing so quickly back then, i used to love seeing new games at the arcade and being blown away. From 1985-2000 the progress was insane, never got bored since each generation was opening up new opportunities.
This is running on Sega's Model 3 arcade hardware. Even the most high-end PC you could possibly buy in the late 90's didn't remotely compare to the Model 3. While 3D graphics were progressing very quickly in general, Sega literally had the fastest 3D hardware on the _planet_ throughout most of the 90's, starting with the Model 1 (1992). They were utterly untouchable, as this game perfectly demonstrates. For some reason you'll rarely see Sega get credited for such a big achievement.

Very cool video! I love that you recorded all the tracks including their mirrored counterparts. Mirror mode is interesting. Even the cars are mirrored (with the decal text backwards). I believe they accomplished it by sticking a -1 in the x-axis scale component of one or more of the transform matrices. When I first tried it out on early versions of Supermodel, I was surprised to discover the car polygons were rendered "inside out" and most of the track was invisible because of how I was doing back-face culling. I strongly suspect that mirror mode is simply a clever hack and that the game is actually still running the simulation as normal but inverting the controls and graphics along the x axis.

For a moment, the thumbnail with the red skeleton made me think this was a creepypasta haunted game thing, like the nes godzilla thing, but this turns out to be a normal game, and that skeleton merely a prop in a spooky themed track.

Watching this again, I think the Voice from this game is actually Dean Harrington aka the Smash Bros Announcer himself. He said it wasn't his voice in Ridge Racer Type 4 but I think it's his voice in Daytona USA 2.
I used to kick ass in the 10 player linked arcade game. Early 2000’s at gameworks in Schaumburg Illinois. If I had space, somehow, I would have one of these cabinets to play.
It's probably the same voice. I think both games were by Amusement Vision but I couldn't get any info on the actor. I know who Daytona USA 2001's actor is but he's sueing Sega for Discrimination which he probably won't win because he broke NDA.

I tested with balance=-80 to make it extra loud, although I found this makes the voice extra quiet as you're selecting a car. Just so it's clear, the difference here is that I forgot to add minus before 50, so that is -50, not 50.
I don't know if it still works on the latest version of Supermodel, but I think you can adjust that by using the command -balance=00. It can be anywhere from 0 to 100, but I don't remember which number I used.
The Advanced track is like what would happen if you asked an eight year old to design a track. "There's a giant pirate ship! Then you're in a sewer! Then a scary horror laboratory with blades and stuff! Then you're in the FUTURE! Then you're in a desert! Then there's a rollercoaster but it's in the north pole!"

So far, there is no official release. It will be playable in an upcoming Yakuza game, though. At this point, it's unclear to me if it will be this version of the game, or Battle on the Edge.
@@Fern7984 No. If you're referring to the mirrored tracks, you hold start as you select the track to get that. There is also a way to play reverse tracks, but I don't remember how to do that. Those weren't included in this video.
You need to change the region in the service menu. Here are the instructions. DAYTONA USA 2: BATTLE ON THE EDGE and POWER EDITION (Model 3 Step 2) Method 1 Go into the test mode and push the service and test button on the PCB at the same time. Method 2 Go into the test mode and push Hold Start and Press GREEN, GREEN, BLUE, YELLOW, RED, YELLOW, BLUE.
I'm not sure if the region is meant to be changed normally. It might be that it's already set to the correct region when the game is sent to the arcade. As far as Model 3 is concerned, each game has a different code to change the region.
I didn't know you actually meant reverse tracks. Mirrored tracks are sometimes called reverse, even though they aren't exactly the same thing. I didn't think there was a way to do reverse tracks in this game, though.

It is Supermodel. I used the option -balance=50, which I think is related to what you're asking me.

For 777 speedway, if you hit the last wall, the dent you get allows you to go faster than undamaged.
Great news! I know how to access the reverse courses: you have to hold brake when selecting a car level.

I used SVN r775. You are playing the Power Edition of the game? The audio is a little different in that version.

Does it usually sound better? I never played on the original cabinet, so I assumed it was intentional to simulate the sound of a radio near your head

So far, there is no official release. It will be playable in an upcoming Yakuza game, though. At this point, it's unclear to me if it will be this version of the game, or Battle on the Edge.

Emulator is Supermodel and it was played with a gamepad.

You're referring to the alternate singer? To switch, you would hold the start button as you're starting the stage.
@@arronmunroe Does changing the singer also change the environment of each course?
@@Fern7984 No. If you're referring to the mirrored tracks, you hold start as you select the track to get that. There is also a way to play reverse tracks, but I don't remember how to do that. Those weren't included in this video.

How do you get English menus?
You need to change the region in the service menu. Here are the instructions.
DAYTONA USA 2: BATTLE ON THE EDGE and POWER EDITION (Model 3 Step 2)
Method 1
Go into the test mode and push the service and test button on the PCB at the same time.
Method 2
Go into the test mode and push Hold Start and Press GREEN, GREEN, BLUE, YELLOW, RED, YELLOW, BLUE.
@@arronmunroe They make you put in a secret code just to change the region?
I'm not sure if the region is meant to be changed normally. It might be that it's already set to the correct region when the game is sent to the arcade. As far as Model 3 is concerned, each game has a different code to change the region.

I didn't know you actually meant reverse tracks. Mirrored tracks are sometimes called reverse, even though they aren't exactly the same thing. I didn't think there was a way to do reverse tracks in this game, though.
