This is such a legendary performance - the African and Japanese music blends together so well and you can tell Mamady and Eitetsu had a blast performing it. Incredible stuff from some awesome performers
This is absolutely beautiful. Two grandmasters of drumming from different parts of the world, each thoroughly trained in thier own separate ethnic music and tradition, each a dedicated, accomplished musician bringing their culture to the world stage. And uniting through rhythm and joy; the universal languages. They make it seem so easy and fun to do this with music. If every art of the world could do this, we would have a joyful world of peace and sharing.
I felt so good watching this performance during the pandemic on the Gold Coast of Australia. This is a very artistic collaboration and layering of two drumming styles. I was fortunate to have taken some lessons from Mamady when he passed through Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and while the experience is fantastic on film, being in the master's presence is extraordinary. He is also a very skilled teacher with a big smile. Thank you for sharing this performance.
Dance is a kind of language, in a dialect unique to every person who speaks it. Music like this reminds us that we occupy these bodies, and our movement is as powerful a form of communication as words could be. And it's not something we think either; when you hear this music and let it move you, you don't have to think. It just IS. And I am HERE it.
Fun fact: Mamady keita is directed descendant of the Great King Sundiata Keita (1190-1255) the who unified and rule de Mali Empire from 1235 till his death.
dont know why my tear come out when im hear it. Love, passion, crazy, spirit, culture, sound....i will make something new in my dance with this. respect and love from VietNam.
The one so expressive and sporadic, the other very intense and calculated. Combined, they compliment each other in a way few other musicians can achieve.
@Yolanda Davis What «back handed» means ? Is it something bad (there is «back» in it). It sounds like «false» or something like that but I'm not sure ^^ Edit. Or something «regressive»
REAL TALK - best cross cultural conversation between 2 masters that I've had the pleasure of eavesdropping in on in quite some time. afro-asiatic bliss. what a treat. thnx for posting the TRUTH - MORE FYAH!!!
Lay our differences besides and get together as a human race. The world needs ppl like that more than ever before!! I sincerely thank this great Masters for their awesome piece of music, which really helped me to get my day started. On the other hand i'm even more grate- and thankful for them showing the integrational potential of music! Humankind needs more ppl relying on their similarities thus leading us to a more peacful world! Led the message spread! Amen!!
Colours of the world..... if we all looked and lived the same... that would be boring.... we learn and complete each other with our own cultures and ways.... mutual respect and overstanding is the key... respect to conscious people.
Couldn't agree more, can't stand this horrible global consumer culture that's emerging, we need to celebrate our diversity not palm it off for some bullshit artificial alternative! When I went to Bali I wanted to experience Bali, but you have to run very far away from Kuta to get away from the fucking Italian restaurants and western style bars :/ I got there in the end, but damn I wish I could have travelled the world 50 years ago when you had a real purpose to see something different. Fuck convenience! We want experience!
No words ...only a big river of emotions..this was pure ecstasy . People who are true masters have big shoulder and strong arms...you are like a mountain. Big hug from heart to heart❤😲😃😃😃
I help facilitate drum circle(s). The closest large US city is Chicago. Thank you to Mamady Keita (djembefola) and Eitetsu Hayashi (taiko soloist). While the importance of the difference between group drumming and solo work cannot be under stated, I thank you all for this work. I am inspired.
I hate worldbeat b******* it sounds like a bunch of noise. Everybody's trying to throw their culture into the pot to make themselves relevant. Listening to this teaches me what not to do. You people are into celebrity and marketing more than the meaning of the drum.
@tajrulzify That is your opinion in which you have the right to have like I have the right to have my opinion that this sounds like another noisy corny New World beat collaboration. A bunch of spaghetti thrown up against the wall that I'm supposed to like. LOL
I love any kind of drums since I was 5 years old (46 now) and watching these two talented performers is simply inspiring and indescribable. Thanks for the post!!
The test of heaven!! before death 😁 lightning and thunder I LOVE IT !! This Two should tour the world together the world needs something like this. 💚💛❤
I got goosebumps listening to this phenomenal performance. Who knew that drums from Japan and Guinea go so beautifully together? Two fiercely masterful drummers from different parts of the globe coming together to deliver these powerful rhythm and sound to people all around the world… I’m so thankful that we live in an age where we can appreciate such a beautiful cultural exchange.
I've wondered for years why I've never seen djembefola and taiko together. I was thinking something orchestra-sized (and still want to see/feel that), but I'm glad I'm not the only one that had this seemingly obvious thought. Thanks for the upload. Sir Mamady Keita's hands on those switches from lyrical to rhythm ARE THEE TRUTH.
You, my beastly friend are a true warrior artist. I haven’t enjoyed this level of percussive artistry since 1980 when I saw, live in K. C. Leonard Gibbs make music with a rope web around a clay pot 5 minutes, solo. He was giving GroverWashington, jr. a break. Thank you for this explosion of glory!
I run out of words to describe what I just saw between theses 2 great men 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 - LUUUUUV My African culture n heritage 💜 - best way to take your mind of covid-19
Almost all politicians are lawyers or economists. That explains in part why the world is as disjointed as it is. Lawyers and economists make sense in terms of lawmaking and economic policy, but we need more artists like this as heads of state. People who have experienced common humanity to such a high degree.
It would be a mistake of monumental proportions to assume a talented drummer would make a good head of state by virtue of their musical ability. It is a common fallacy to believe that a celebrity is a likeable or good person because we like their work, which leads to some pretty unfortunate problems nowadays. People will listen to, and give more heed to a celebrity giving their opinion on a subject, than to what the science and experts in the field have to say. I'm not saying an artist can't be a good leader, but no artist who hasn't taken the time to cultivate leadership skills as well as art, will develop those skills through art. Artists aren't enlightened, they are people just like you who have become good at art.
These Masters are indeed united and Gathered Together in Peace. And why is each of us watching them? Because this is what each one of watching needs to hear at this moment. There is something so primordial and mythical about drums that it connect every cultures since ancient times.
This is such a legendary performance - the African and Japanese music blends together so well and you can tell Mamady and Eitetsu had a blast performing it. Incredible stuff from some awesome performers
Such respect & humility between them. There's a lesson to be learned here.
This is 🔥 on so many levels!. If this didn't move your spirit you must be dead
The world could use more cultures coming together like this.
Facts
just like the rhythms show us, when they come together really good things can happen, and really we are all one and the same.
Amen dude!

Is Mamady Keita related to Salif Keita?
Makes me proud to have Malian ancestors. Always thought their architecture was off the charts.

It's PERFECT. Symbiosis.

It works very well together, and it's also really interesting see the cultural differences displayed in how they play. This is really awesome.

@Yolanda Davis What «back handed» means ? Is it something bad (there is «back» in it). It sounds like «false» or something like that but I'm not sure ^^

I see very little sporadicity. These 2 are trained professionals, the littlest impromptu seeming thing was calculated.
If a drumbeat could cure the world, surely this would.

Its amazing seeing my too favorite cultural influences Japan and Africa come together to make this
Truly mind blowing
They go from playing on-the-beat to syncopated effortlessly. Bravo. One of the best performances I've seen.
All men become brothers: at least in the music it is possible. What a breathtaking combination of African Djembe and Japanese Taiko drums! 😮
The African drum is crazy amazing. How can one single drum produce any extraordinary beats! Literally I hear it speaking. This is truly amazing.!
