    Instead of knocking the grinder around, I've found a thin silicone coaster sits nicely on top of the hopper and creates a sufficient air seal so tapping on the coaster pushes that last bit out. It's a cheap bellows solution and works with just one tap. Love these long term reviews you do! Awesome work!

    As I think others may have said, Niche now offers a "double walled" dosing cup so that the inside is completely smooth. You can purchase from their accessory site, if you have a Gen 1 (w/ the rim), if it bugs you enough. I do agree that it's great to see them making improvements over time. :)

    Niche is shipping with a ridge less cup now as of the Dec 2020 builds so that solves one of your gripes. I also some people have gotten a chest compression cup and put it on top in place of the lid then it is a bellows and keeps the beans from flying out.

    I feel like it’s pretty easy to get one when availability is updated and you’ve been on the emailing list. But it is a process that can take 1-2 months. That being said, with COVID and Brexit occurring all at once, I’m inclined to forgive these wait times. Just love how easy it is to use and clean.

    Thank you for your videos, I've always like them. Here since the beginning 🙋🏻‍♂️
    Btw I think the dosing cup problem that you noted on the video is already fixed on the newer orders. Mine is just like yours so is not ideal but I don't use it as much since my pf is 51mm. Nevertheless is good to know that they're improving such details. I'm pretty happy with mine and tbh can't think of any other option with the niche capabilities at that price point.

    Agree with all your points - I love mine, but clearing the retained grinds is a pain. Likewise been dropping the lid, tapping the chute, snapping the oak coaster down over the bolt head ...
    finally got a collapsible silicone cup, and it works really well. It’s not perfect, but it is great.

    Honestly you are correct with the availability. I ordered in October 2020 and finally got it just yesterday. I didn’t purchase from them directly but from Slow Pour Supply. And it just took forever. I also started to look for end game grinders. But it came just in time before I wanted to pull a trigger on an EG-1.

    It’s my understanding from a comment I read on Facebook that someone posted a picture of the new Niche dosing cup and it’s my understanding that they have eliminated that ridge in the inside and it’s very polish to eliminate that problem you mentioned.
    With regards to the the small amount of retention I purchased a silicone devise ( not specifically designed for it ) that you can use it to pump the coffee grind that remains in the Niche.
    One of the comments they also mentioned is that if you use the silicone device to pump the remaining coffee grind ( about .3 of a gram) you can actually get more of the coffee grind ( maybe .2 of gram more) by overriding the red safety button by using a pencil or other item to be able to run the Niche at the same time you pump silicone device.
    I think Niche should include some type of similar device to be able to pump out the remaining coffee grind. In reality this is not much to be concerned about but it would be nice if Niche includes it in future shipment. The only time this has an effect if you are changing coffees and or brewing methods and grind size.

    Love my Niche, but having fairly recently entered the world of pour overs (V60 and Switch), I’ve been constantly struggling to get a cup that has any hints of clarity. Tempted to blame the fines produced (having experimented heavily in the 35 to 50 grind range using Hoffman and Rao methods/recipes). Do you experience similar issues on your side? If not, what range works for you? Or is this where Kruve filters find their use?

    What was that hopper on top of the grinder when you spoke about it being used in commercial settings? I'd love the grinder and would use it to dose grind most of the time, but I'd like the option to grind larger quantities if, for instance, I wanted to bag some coffee I'd roasted to give to someone pre-ground for example.

  • @george_taylor
    @george_taylor 3 года назад +1

    I've had mine 6 months. Love it. As Spro says you stop weighing the beans after you've ground them because you trust it. I've stopped using the dosing cup though. I've bought a very nice wood dosing funnel and I grind straight into my portafilter now. I've made a prototype stand that holds the portafilter in place on the Niche with the dosing ring on. Works really well. As for retention of grinds in the dosing cup, I now regularly spritz the beans with water before grinding. Also I use one of those silicon sputum cups as bellows to properly clear out after each grind. There's lots of options for customising your usage of the NZ. Probably enough owners now to even start a biz selling after market accessories.

    I think that on the availability issue is that it gained more traction in the market than the creator expected. And being a new player in the coffee scene they may be subject to supplier constraints. But that is my speculation. Especially since they continue to use indegogo as their store front. I love my niche. It works great for all my brewing needs and I think it looks cool. Instead of slamming it. I close the lid and cycle the motor and flick the spout. Not too much is left behind. It is a joy to use every time I use it.

I finally got persuaded to spend that kind of money on a grinder after buying a 1zpresso hand grinder, experiencing the leap in quality espresso and converting it to an electric with my DeWalt cordless drill after suffering a shoulder injury. However, it doesn't matter since there is no availability. Now that instead of a zero niche, I have a yellow cordless drill adorning my kitchen s countertop.

    I've been considering the Niche Zero and the Baratza Forte AP for a while now, is this a comparison you considered when choosing the Niche Zero initially? As you mentioned in the video the availability of the Niche is a concern. Having used my Encore for close to a year now, I like how easy it is to clean and maintain, and hope that translates somewhat to the Forte if I were to go that route when adding an espresso machine to my workflow. Overall I'm still on the fence, the Niche gets a lot of love, but it's a little harder to find information on the Forte that's impartial (not from a seller or similar).

  • @your_sweetpea
    @your_sweetpea 3 года назад

    With regards to your issue of having to knock around the grinder a bit to get the remaining grounds out, my personal solution to that is to just use the hard part of the brush that came with the Niche Zero to knock on the grind chute. I'm sure it's not perfect, but a couple of knocks gets out most of what I'd be concerned about every time.
    I have been frustrated with the Flow Control Disk, because as nice as it is I had built a habit around dusting around in the burrs with the brush after every grinding session and being unable to just open up the lid and brush around inside it while still being able to *see* the leftover grounds through the transparent disk has become very frustrating to me, although I'm sure it's something I'll get used to.
    Similarly the issues with the cup you mention haven't been a problem for me because I'm used to knocking on it with the brush prior to pouring out all the grounds, which does a pretty good job getting them out of the little crevices in my experience. I also dust around in the cup itself after grinding, but that's more out of a dislike of remaining ground coffee being in the cup when i'm measuring out new beans into it.

    Agree with your assessment of the NZ! Some native functions like something to purge residual grinds would be nice instead of having to buy weird things or knock it out would be more ideal. I don’t really use the dosing cup anymore since I’m using the Decent Espresso stand and grind directly into my PF, but I can see how that can be irritating (and avoidable). The fact they still use Indiegogo is kinda dumb and availability can really drive away potential customers and certainly is a negative depending on who you are. One thing I would add to the cons is how the marker on the dial works.. it would be neat to have some native ability to set marks for multiple brew methods (like 2 or 3) so that you can remember other grind adjustments you might use. I’ve read many comments of people that add markers and other random things to achieve that. That being said, it’s a fantastic grinder and money well spent if you can grab one. I can go from espresso to coarse grind for cold brew to AeroPress no problem, and that’s pretty amazing. Not to mention the ability to switch up beans at such an ease is great. Hence, having multiple markers on the dial would be neat because it speaks to the nature and purpose of the Niche Zero. Anyway, cheers and thanks for the review (again)!

    I'm curious (and maybe you've covered this before) where you think the Niche shines best: espresso or pourover? Forum ppl seem to thing it's best for espresso and only so so for pourover. Also, did you ever get your hands on an Ode? Curious your thoughts and comparison, especially if/when they release some better burrs for it.

    • @arvedpi1784
      @arvedpi1784 3 года назад +1

      As a fellow Niche user, it's definitely an espresso focused grinder. The conical burrs make it a grinder that produces cups with great texture and body (great for espresso) rather than clarity and cleanness in the cup (which would be preferable for e.g. a V60). Pourovers are still amazing for the price point, but I'd always pick a flat burrs grinder over the niche for pourovers.

      In a similar price range for pourovers I'd suggest a wilfa uniform or eureka mignon although both aren't really single dose grinder comparable to the niche. My best recommendation would be the lagom p64, but it's like 2 or 3 times as expensive as the niche, so you'd have to know if you'd want to pay that amount of money for a grinder.

    I own a niche zero and used it for espresso for a while. I have noticed that it doesn't always respond to small changes in the grind setting. That is very frustrating but I didn't hear others about is. Does anybody know whether this is a common problem? Also I don't like grinding into the cup first. Now in winter the statics are a big problem and a lot of grinds remain in the cup unless I wet the beans first, but then they stick to the hopper. Last issue: really large beans take very long to grind since the hole in the disc is too small. Indonesian long berry for instance

    Coming across this as I find myself feeling overwhelmed with grinder research. If you were only going to be single dosing espresso would this be your grinder of choice at this price point? I only make espresso a couple of times a week and don't want beans going stale in the hopper, so that is why I am looking at something in the single dosing config. Even though the NZ is getting all sorts of praise for its versatility it still seems to be hard to find a similarly priced grinder set up for espresso and single dosing with little retention. Thoughts?

    Availability and taxes after brexit are mostly the reasons i decided to not engage with niche but to use something like baratza encore for filter coffee (i like french press) and a specialita mignon XL (new model with 65mm flat burrs) for espresso instead. This setup is almost the same price due to taxes from niche zero and i can combine nice grind quality with ease of use and all these are available in few days with tech support here in Greece.

      I would equate it to 'hand tightened'..., as long as you are fairly consistent...your results should be consistent. My complaint on the recalibrate dial is that there should be a 'lock'. I feel like the ring can easily move when you don't intend it to and then you end up using the wrong number on the scale for future reference.
