How to sharpen your Chainsaw

- Here I show the quick hand file method of sharpening my saw. We have a MS290 with .325 pitch, so a quick touch up from the 5/8 round file is all it takes! A sharp saw is easier to use, more fun and safer than fighting to get through the log with a dull blade.
Most common file sizes are 5/32", 3/16", & 7/32". If you are truly sharpening a .325" pitch chain, a 3/16" file is the correct size. It's pretty common knowledge that a .325" pitch chain should be sharpened with a 3/16" (4.8 mm) file. Your 5/32" (4 mm) file would be for a 1/4" or 3/8" mini pitch chain. A 7/32" (5.5 mm) file is for a 3/8" pitch chain.
That’s correct I think I said 5/16 but meant 3/16. Thanks for the correction
keep it up
Will do!
Get yourself some golf balls, drill a little hole and tap the file butt into it and it creates a great file handle.
That’s a good idea
When demonstrating something new to viewers, it's helpful to do things correctly. I've never seen someone demonstrate this procedure without using a file handle & actually run the file backwards across the tooth? Most everyone does the power stroke of the file cut with the handle moving forward.
Thanks
You’re holding the file backwards - 7:17 - push it toward the red tip, not toward the point. You should remove this video.
Moreover, the burnt cutters are your first clue. When the file cuts in the right direction there is a distinct sound and feel - not the scraping heard in this video.
Thanks for info
