How to avoid phasing when DJing? What is DJ phasing?
In this DJ Phasing Explained tutorial, I will answer these questions!
When you are learning how to DJ there is a more technical reason why it is essential to learn how to mix correctly. When two base drums play at the same time, they can sometimes cancel each other out through something called sound canceling/ phasing.
I will teach you all about phasing with DJing and beat matching!
I give you a beginner DJ lesson when it comes to blending music when you DJ.
I also use Ableton Live to give you a real-life example of phasing.

This was super helpful. Thank you. I'm in your beginner class now and can't wait to mix my first full set.
This is some excellent information and example. I did notice it myself and was wondering why it is as I'm just a beginner in mixing. Had often my "energy" down for no reason and thought it was just "that's how it is". Will definitely apply this knowledge in my future sets - I believe doing it properly is really neat.
great video - thanks for posting 👍
Thankyou for explaining this,
This is exactly what I was searching for, I found this out when I started mixing i got so annoyed when I finally beat matched my songs and the beat was cancelling out, you explained everything perfectly
Great Video! Thanks!!
Been DJing for years and never really knew the technical reason for this but it totally makes sense 👍🏼
Excellent explanation. Thank you!
I indiscreetly noticed this when mixing but didn't know how or why.. good thing I I decided to click on this video. 😎
The music sounds SO beautiful when u transition it correctly!
10:17 phasing goes for the bass notes, the highs and mids too. Good info!
It's physics :D Anything that makes a wave can be cancelled with phasing.
Well I never knew that.thanks phill👍🏻
Man I been looking for this and always wondered why energy fell from bass once I added song to mix good job man
The flipside of phasing is harmonic amplification - if two waveforms are perfectly matched together, the output amplitude (read: volume) is doubled. This is pretty much the reason behind all musical instruments and how they are designed and tuned - they take the maximum possible advantage of this effect.
At 9:23, you can still feel the phasing. I realize this is fully intended - you've made your video about how to prevent and recover from it.
What I want to advise is to show how a perfect mix works - if you really sync two kicks together, even with bass completely cut off the master output will sound much punchier! That's what you want to do if your goal is to go up in the energy, right?
Very helpful!
Thanks mate! :)
Loved it...
What a great video :-) I love the technical insight and I have the same cutie at home :-)
I mean some mixes do takes power with the phasing problem, but others having both lows/basses enhance the weaker bass and you can play with the filter to make drops.
It's the simple things that make a big difference. I didn't even realize I was phasing before watching this video.
Finaly a video with answers.
I did an awesome set but 4 songs were "phasing" so I need to re do it because that sound is so annoying
There's another possibility, that the 2 kicks constructively interfere and then double the power. This phase cancellation (destructive interference) cannot happen for every mix. In fact, with two identical tracks, you should get double power when they are perfectly mixed. If you don't, then there's an issue with wiring. However, if they are not perfectly mixed, then you could get cancellation.
In theory lol
What is the advantage of using the channel volume buttons versus the cross fader?
In a nutshell it is just much more control when it comes to blending songs. You can choose how much of the song is added and what frequencies.
I was wondering that same thing! Thanks for the response Phil!!
Just more versatility really
Is there an alternative to using the cue button? I never understand it no matter how much ive researched :/ Im brand new aswell
Hey, the other option is hot cues. See my video on them here ruclips.net/video/MFkEvkgOamM/видео.html
I always use a hot cue instead of the cue button. Way easier to manage that the cue button
So basically its like physical speakers being out of phase/reverse polarity but its happening digitally?
Yes
The signals of the two tracks are canceling because they are out of phase. Pretty sure this happens on full analog DJ systems also. (turntables with a fully analog mixer)
Sounds like they are echoing,
Kinda tripy
Draksis Agreed! Also, are you a furry? Random question lol!
Although you can use phasing as an effect if you want. Otherwise yeah nah don't do it
If you are going to show people how to dj, please stop pre-recoding without checking them before releasing them. On too many of your videos I notice you have the crossfader to the left and you are playing music on the right channel which cant be done with the crossfader on the left. if you record live instead of recording audio and add it to your video it would know that you have no sound. This the third video I have looked at and this time its because someone told me they brought your online course and they are not happy with it. I am not here to bash you but if you dont know what you are doing please stop with the videos.
I have deactivated my crossover fader. It does nothing at all. If someone is not happy with my course, tell them to get in touch for a full refund.
William Gatling - Not bashing you, but any DJ with real-life deck experience would have deduced that the cross fader was deactivated. If you had been experienced enough to see that, you could have been more of a help to your beginner friend.
@@djcreole4912 not bashing either but these videos are targeted to new dj's and if they follow his videos to a t they would wonder what's wrong like my son did. I had to tell him what's going on with it. I hope he explain phasing better on his ableton video's because from a production point of view you really has to know what's going on with it. but overall good video. keep up the good work spreading knowledge to the people. :)
William Gatling you're an idiot...
