If you learn the radio edit mixing, you can have a packed dance floor all night long only playing the best part of every known party track, when talking about keeping the energy levels up. There's almost always a 1,2,3,4,swap sequence you can use, or fit a vocal intro over a bridge or just simply start the first beat of a song on the last beat of a song. That way you can always do tempo changes, and they should either be small or big. Having a bunch of extended versions will help you out when there's no way to use the other ways to mix. Over time you will find very different tracks, in different genres that will overlap very well, and that is how you transition between genres an tempos without loosing the energy.
Examples: 1. The Grease Megamix -> Chubby Checker - Let's twist again Tempo change is 123 -> 164, 2. Y.M.C.A -> I Was made for loving you -> Cotton eye Joe, Genre switches Disco-Rock-Country. All the songs used are the original radio edits. Now you know it can be done. Just listen and compare the tracks and you will eventually find the perfect spots to do the transitions, unless you have been somewhere I play where I play this stuff. Then you know :) .
Silence on a club floor is usually a bad thing, unless you have a build up that ends with a silence, and then something very catchy, a melody or vocal everyone knows has to enter. A good way to do it is to have 4 silent beats before dropping in what it is you want people to go crazy over. In party sets, transition from one vocal to another is very rewarding when people knows the tracks by heart. Drop the music and let the people sing along, and when it fits you drop in another vocal banger. Great way to change the tempo without people even notice.
This week i play three nights for the university students, both Swedish and International, as they have their kick off weeks. This is 6 hour party sets, and I love them. There's a couple of hours of build-up, and then there's 4 hours of blasting party,,all the way to the end. No winding down, except for the last song. I use all the techniques above and then some with great success those nights. Some of those techniques sounds very flat when you practice at home, but I guarantee they come to life with a packed dance floor.
You are playing in front of university students, on their opening, they are about to party hard no matter the music. I DO NOT judge your playing style nor your selection, just keep your feet on the ground bro. Dance floor would be packed anyway on those occasions
@@Palios33 Ehhrrmm, no. The opening lasts for 2 weeks, party every day in- and outside the Campus nightclub and there's several dance floors, different styles of music. Especially the club floor where there's both resident and famous guest Dj's playing. If you don't keep the flow on the party floor you'll end up loosing a lot of the people to the other areas. Then comes the ordinary school weeks with the Wednesday parties. Back to normal the capacity shrinks to 1100 people and only 1 DJ on each dance floor. Doesn't mean there will be full nights on busy school weeks, so still want to keep the mixing tight and with a flow to give them the best experience every time. Then, this is not ''my'' style of mixing. It's one of many styles I've learned over more than 30 years as a DJ, and of course I make a decision for each transition. every time. If you'd visit my page and listened to any of my mixes you'd know what's my fav music and that I mix that layered in key. The opposite of party mixing.

@@djalexxwhite2438 No, not really, but I'm thinking of making one myself as I see new DJ's that I work with getting very stressed when they need to go more party and don't have the intro's, outro's and breaks they normally use for their transitions. I could probably give you an 8 - 10 examples and explain how and why I chose each transition. It should be enough for both practice and get your own ideas spinning.

Good tips, but one thing you might have missed is when you play a song that should work and but for some reason does not work at all, and the crowd do not feel it. How do you recover or minimise the negative impact for this? For me I try to bring in a next song much quicker then earlier anticipated. It also helps having a folder on your USB that have 'Safety Songs', which you are songs that you've built over time that nearly always work on dancefloors. This will help save the earlier poor song selection. Would be great to see what technique you use @jon Sine?

My best recovery is to do a hard nudge on the CDJ wheel playing the bad song so it does a spool sound effect then hard cut it off. Let a split second of silence drop then hit play on Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" which begins with a hard vocal that everyone knows. Works everytime!

Hi, Jon. I totally agree if your playing in a club. But if you play weddings or birthdayparties, you have to switch styles way faster. Mostly max 3 songs in one style and then something complete else.
Mean Beatz was thinking the same thing. Play 3 of any style in a row and someone will complain. So you learn to cycle through styles and tempos. Also, I’m especially early on in the night, there’s no sense in having sets because you’ll get derailed by the end of the first track. I do believe that at minimum a DJ should learn how to do a good “radio” mix where the songs are played however that will require that the DJ know of the song fades out or has a cold end, if the beginning of the next song instantly starts or there’s audio that needs to be skipped over. Think of the church organ at the beginning of Faith by George Michael. I could go on.

Hey Jon, can you please explain why you got the denon players in your studio? do you also play in clubs on the prime-set, or are they getting one for you. Here in my place in Austria i have seen it very less times (only when headliners came up, which were denon-guys). I thought many times about getting the denons because there would be a few features i like, but till there are none in the clubs i prefer my nexus setup. Would be interesting how you are doing when you practice at home on denon and go to the club and play on pioneers.

I understood it like you, like something bad/bad communication happened there. But hey, I think every person got people out there which just aren't compatible to themselves.
